We are a community of faith that expresses itself
through the views of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. We strive to live out God’s grace
by worshiping God, sharing time together in fellowship, and reaching out to our neighbors. We
have a place for you here in the mission and ministry of Advent Lutheran Church.

Changed by the Waters
How are we joined together in community?
Our faith draws us together, but we also
lean on Baptism as a means of grace.
What is a “means of grace”? Well, an
earthly element that carries with it meaning
that points to God’s acts of mercy and
grace, along with God’s promise to be
present, is a means of grace…an avenue of
grace. For us Lutherans, Holy Baptism is
great way to point to a specific place and
time in our lives in which we can say,
“There. I was baptized. I am one with God
through this same Spirit that joins Jesus to
God.”
Martin Luther writes in the Large Catechism,
regarding Baptism: “…being dipped under
the water and emerging from it, point to the
power and effect of baptism, which is
nothing else than the slaying of the old
creature and the resurrection of the new
creature, both of which must continue in us
our whole lives long. Thus a Christian life is
nothing else than a daily baptism, begun
once and continuing ever after. For we
must keep at it without ceasing, always
purging whatever pertains to the old
creature, so that whatever belongs to the
new creature may come forth. What is the
old creature? It is what is born in us from
Adam and Eve, irascible, spiteful, envious,
unchaste, greedy, lazy proud – yes – and
unbelieving... Now, when we enter Christ’s
kingdom, this corruption must daily
decrease so that the longer we live the
gentler and more patient and meek we
become, and the more we break away from
greed, hatred, envy, and pride…In baptism
we are given the grace, Spirit, and strength
to suppress the old creature so that the new
may come forth and grow strong.”
We are indeed changed by the waters.
Come Wednesday nights in Lent (Feb. 28,
March 7, 14, 21) at Noon or 6:30pm to

and encourage us to be renewed in faith,

Midweek Lenten Focus - “Changed by the Waters”
In June 2018, we are sending several youth and adults to the ELCA Youth Gathering in Houston, TX. In order to help our congregation learn more about this theme, we are planning two activities during Lent: 1.) Worship and Dinner will be a COMBINED experience this Lent; and 2.) the theme for both noon worship and the Worship/Dinner experience is “Changed by the Waters.” The theme will be centered on the baptismal promises God makes to us, as well as the theme of the ELCA Youth Gathering, “This Changes Everything” (based on Ephesians 2:8 “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”)

Coldest Nights Program
for Women
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has been
hosting the Coldest Nights for Women
program for 2 years. St. Paul’s provides a
drop-in emergency shelter program for
women in the community any evening the
temperatures are forecast to be below 30
degrees. The women meet at St. Margaret’s
Building on the St. Pauls’ campus for an
evening meal and spend the night in a warm
environment. Between 7 and 12 women
participate each evening Coldest Nights is
open. The shelter was open 51 days during
the 2016/17 season.
St. Paul’s is coordinating food teams on
certain days of the week to bring a simple,
warm meal to our ladies. They are reaching
out to several churches to help provide the
meal during the months of December thru
April on the nights the shelter is open.
Advent LC has committed to serving meals
on the first and third Wednesdays,
December through April. Jaime Olsen
([email protected]) and Toi Scott
([email protected]) are coordinating our
efforts. Please contact one or both if you are
interested in helping to provide a meal,
deliver a meal, serve a meal, or any
combination of these things.
May God bless you as you serve!

More Donation Opportunities for
Coldest Nights Program!!!
During the cold nights in January, a friend
of Advent shared a heartfelt experience
while serving at the Coldest Nights shelter.
The longer FB post can be seen here:
https://www.facebook.com/TheAdventChur
ch/posts/10155434454786747
… but here is a snippet of that post:
if you’re local and want to help in a
small way...please reach out.
My friend Toi and I worked the
Coldest Nights Shelter last night.
We love these women.
We go in and try to make their
evening calm. Serve them dinner. Have good
conversations and get their immediate needs
taken care of.
(Anyone can learn to do this, just ask
I know someone who can hook you up! 😉)
These ladies do not ask for a lot.
They ask for what they need.
Here are some things you can donate:
• Cough drops (being out in this
weather keeps them not feeling well)
• Ibuprofen or acetaminophen (their
bodies just hurt)
• socks (socks get worn so quickly
because they walk so much. Last
night socks were frozen because
snow had gotten in tennis shoes)
• individual lotions (this weather is
cracking their skin)
• chap sticks (the weather is cracking
their lips)
• underwear!!!!! (Least donated item.
Some women have just one pair.
Y’all. They need more than one pair.
Enough said.)
• individual shampoos/soaps (hotel
stuff is good if you travel...save them
and donate)
• hand and feet warmers
• hats gloves scarves
• plastic silverware from fast food
o (If you don’t use it...start a
bag. You can donate it to a
shelter. We will use it!!!)
• laundry detergent
• paper plates/napkins/paper towels
• blankets (they are cold to the bone
when they come in. Cold To the
bone.)
• long underwear- all sizes
• hot chocolate, coffee, tea bags
• sweat pants any size
• if you have tennis shoes or warm
boots. I can get those to people who
can use them
Please leave these donations in the narthex,
and we will let the Coldest Night folks know
we have such items.
