New Star was conceived as a result of a merger in 2016 by two organizations with a long, rich history.

SouthSTAR Services and New Hope Center were both championed by courageous parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities who were seeking better educational opportunities for their children. The hard work and dedication of these pioneers are, and will remain the fabric of New Star; appropriately named to reflect both organizations’ rich history.

New Star is an extremely exciting milestone for both organizations and all our stakeholders. By merging our two organizations, we’ve improved our administrative and programmatic efficiencies, expand our array of services, provide more choices for families and consumers, improve the overall infrastructure, and develop a more diversified funding base.

Dear Friend,

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, we are pleased to present New Star’s Annual Report.

For more than 65 years, it has been our mission to serve individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities with compassion and care. This past year, as we successfully merged two organizations into one, that objective remains our passion as we move into the next era of serving our consumers.

We can say with pride that we continue to create more opportunities for our consumers to “Turn Impossible to I’m Possible.”

This past year, New Star has been busy bridging the digital divide for our consumers with a generous $10,000 grant from Comcast NBCUniversal. In collaboration with the Arc of the United States, we launched a pilot project to create Digital Learning Labs. These Labs expanded our computer center to include mobile technology such as iPads and iPods. Consumers can now participate in weekly classes where they learn to use apps and computer programs to assist with job training and mastering essential life skills.

And, partnering with the Suburban Service League and The Great Lakes Charitable Foundation, New Star had the opportunity to update the equipment within our Crete and Chicago Heights computer labs, and expand our program offerings to include Technology Coaching Classes. This specially designed software provides our consumers with a hands-on approach to teaching new skills that support community integration and employment.

As we look forward, we are undertaking an organization-wide initiative to create even more exploratory opportunities for our consumers. New Star is embracing community inclusion in all aspects of our service delivery. The chance to live and work in the community and to be valued for one’s uniqueness and abilities will be the foundation of our programming. Specifically, we will implement strategies to continue to reduce unemployment, increase access to transportation, expand volunteer and community-based learning opportunities and extend community-based healthy lifestyle choices for people with disabilities.

None of this would be possible without the help of our generous donors and sponsoring organizations. We are grateful for that partnership as we move into a new era of service.

Shortly following the merger, Don Goff, our Board Chairman, passed away. Don was instrumental in shaping the vision of New Star. His passing was a tremendous loss, but his inspiration remains.
