On behalf of the ACA Southeastern Planning Committee welcome to Savannah, GA! The city’s cobblestone streets, quaint historical houses and southern charm will be the perfect backdrop to our conference . We hope that you will enjoy what we have lined up for you .

We worked hard to carry our theme throughout all areas of our conference this year . Community is so important in what we do every day . We can only hope you understand more of how each one of us is connected through our communities and how these connections are touching the lives we serve .

Now, let’s jump right into it and talk conference highlights!• We don’t have one, but two amazing keynote speakers lined up for you .

Lori Hoffner has been offering training for positive youth development, community networking and relationship building since 1997 and has spoken nationally regarding youth development, employment and staff engagement as well as multiple community issues .

Dr . Gwynn Powell, Ph .D, is part of the Park, Recreation, Tourism Management faculty at Clemson University . She has been an active volunteer with ACA at the local and national level with two decades of experience with day and residential camp, as well as recent experience with camps in Russia, South Africa and Turkey .

ACA’s Educational Endorsement Program (EEP) is a platform to connect learners to educational opportunities . Learners can access quality education from a variety of organizations, associations, and businesses, and can be assured that these offerings have been vetted to meet ACA EEP requirements .

Every year ACA, Southeastern gives back to the local community in which we hold our conference . This year we are honored to help Greenbriar Children’s Center, Inc . Greenbriar is a private, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote services which supports the healthy development of children and the strengthening of families . They are accredited by the Council on Accreditation for Children and Family Services and currently operate 5 programs:

• Emergency Shelter provides services for youth ages, 10-17 who have been removed from the home because of neglect, abuse, abandonment and/or who are runaway/homeless .

• Independent Living program provides services for homeless youth and foster care youth who are transitioning out of foster care, ages 18-24 .

• Family Preservation helps parents provide stable, nurturing homes for their children through counseling, parent aide, family support groups, etc .

• Early Childhood Development program offers affordable, high quality child care and education for children ages 6 months to 5 years utilizing the High Scope Learning Method .

• Project Safe Place focuses on the prevention of child abuse and neglect by partnering with local businesses, public and private schools, Chatham Area Transit, community centers, churches, etc . to provide safe havens for children in need .

For many, camp is a place of fun and recreation that leads to powerful personal outcomes of leadership, friendship skills, and more . In many parts of the world, camp seeks to directly impact serious challenges facing society such as corruption, HIV, poverty, hunger, and inferior education for girls . The idea that camp provides an intentional community to empower and combat societal ills is not new, but entrepreneurial models of camp from around the world can spark new ideas . In Nigeria, corruption and hunger are attacked with a camp that has a working farm as its financial base with job skills and food as additional outcomes . In Russia, camp happens every day of the year through partnerships with schools . In South Africa, the focus is on HIV prevention and in the Middle East, English language instruction .

These programs tackle serious societal issues through youth programming . Join a journey to these camps through photos and narrative as we pose questions to prompt thinking about partnerships that might expand our reach within our own community .

Historic Tour of Savannah Sunday, September 21, 10:00 a .m .

Join us as we get a private trolley tour through the Historic, Victorian and Colonial Districts of Savannah! Cost includes a 90 minute tour starting at our hotel, Hilton DeSoto and ending at Ellis Square . Tour departs the Hilton DeSoto at 10:00 a .m . Standards Courses General Training Requirements for Camps Seeking Accreditation

It is the expectation that one or more individuals associated with each accredited camp (or a camp working toward accreditation) will attend a standards course . The individual completing the standards course for the camp must be actively involved with the preparation of materials, on site during a significant amount of the camp season, and on site and available the day of the visit . It is also expected that an individual with current standards training be actively involved with the camp and on site during non-visit years .

The way we answer these questions say a lot about the way we approach the ever-growing diversity of our communities . The health of a community goes beyond exercise and eating right, it also includes tolerance, acceptance and seeing the value of every individual . This training will help your staff define how their professional and personal behaviors emerge in relationship to others that are of the same or different ethnic and cultural backgrounds .

Developing an Initiatory Program for 16 & 17 Year Old Males Ossabaw Room Dan Davis Camp Rockmont for Boys

It cannot be denied that our society has embraced a culture of prolonged adolescence . We need a catalyst to launch our young men into adulthood . After 50 years with a CIT program, Camp Rockmont changed course in its approach with 16 and 17-year-old young men . The Catalyst Program is an initiatory experience that communicates that our communities cannot thrive if we continue to delay adulthood . Join us as we unpack this program and leave with tangible steps to set-up your own initiatory program .

Partnership with the Health Center: Improving Health Outcomes for Campers and Staff Monterey Suite Lisa Cranwell-Bruce Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta

Having problems retaining health care staff? Not sure how to describe the health care needs of your staff and campers? Do you want to improve communication with your health care staff and incorporate them into the rest of the camp staff? Attend this session to learn how to collaborate and communicate with your health care team to improve staff health and wellness, have your health care staff return each year, meet the Health and Wellness Standards, and keep your campers happy and healthy .

Come experience new “Learn to Look” activities designed to simulate and motivate your lifeguards and aquatic staff! Take home useful ideas for the initial guard training class, in-service training during your season, and programs to help finish your season with a strong team . These activities are adaptable to all types of lifeguarded facilities and are insightful for all guards---setting a good foundation for new guards, and powerful reinforcement for even well experienced ones . This session can serve as a great reminder to all of us of the importance of our overall lifeguard staff “attitude” and culture . We must constantly battle against the threat of lifeguard boredom; inattention and compliancy . . .come, share, and learn solutions to getting the best out of your lifeguard team!

Keeping children safe is the highest priority for camping, but numerous studies show harms from keeping children too safe . Children who never face adversity enter adulthood ill-equipped for its challenges . Camp is an unrivaled opportunity for children to overcome their fears and test the limits of the physical world . Having a balanced approach to risk management will require educating parents about the benefits of age-appropriate risks, as well as careful oversight of staff and children .

Gay Byers Newcomer AwardAwarded for outstanding involvement in ACA, Southeastern activities and/or decision making . Nominee must have been a member of ACA, Southeastern for less than ten years and demonstrate high professional standards .

Distinguished Service AwardFor service to ACA, Southeastern that is outstanding and above and beyond the expectations of the position held .
