In 1938 she had her first hit song, “A Tiskett a Tasket”. She became the #1 female jazz artist and performed all over the world. Hear Ella singing with such greats as Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and others. She received 13 Grammy Awards for her many recordings. There will be interviews with Ella and people who worked with her. WEST END LIBRARY OPENING The new West End Branch Library at 903 West Beech Street is open. The branch has four computers, two iMacs, a printer, scanner, copier, fax machine and a Crayon Kiosk with three iPads for children. There will be a sampling of new books and films which will be small at the outset. The summer schedule of the Branch will be as follow: Monday 3:00 - 7:00 p.m. Tuesday CLOSED Wednesday – Saturday 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Sunday CLOSED The normal schedule will commence Monday, September 7 and will be based on the schedule preferred by a majority of those who submitted the survey, which is being collated at this writing. Great American Songbook Piano - Stories - Sing Along with Stan Wiest Sunday, September 13 at 1:30 p.m. Stan Weist plays selections from the Great American Songbook - featuring selections from Stan’s new Piano CD “Music to Drive By”. Stan tells anecdotes of his performances with and for celebrities and takes questions. Summer Fun Line Dance with Isabelle Saturday, August 22 at 2:00 p.m. Learn some of the “Hot”new line dances, as well as some of the easier classic line dances. No partner is needed, as we dance to different rhythms of popular music. Featured dances will be disco, country, samba, boogie, swing, cha cha, rumba and mambo music. It’s a day of summer fun for everyone.

Meditation Summer Camp for Beginner’s with Lisa WiselMondays, Aug. 17, 24, 31 from 7:30 - 8:15 p.m.Relax deeply into summer as you learn a new skill. Meditation fosters an internal fortitude that can be accessed during times of stress. Physicality, breath and sensation will be the focus in this seated (in chairs) meditation. Lisa Wisel, Board Certified Movement Therapist will be your coach. Dress in comfortable clothing (bring a sweater) and a pillow and mat along if you prefer to use the floor. All age groups are welcome. Lisa has a Master of Science degree in Dance/Movement Therapy, is a graduate of both “A Society of Souls School for Non-Dual Healing and Awakening” and The Gestalt Center of Long Island. She also teaches for the Department of Counseling, Research, Special Education and Rehabilitation at Hofstra University.

South Nassau Communities Hospitals Presents: PSA screening, (blood test only) Tuesday, September 8 from 4:00-6:30 p.m. (last appointment at 6:30 p.m.) Staff from South Nassau’s Gertrude and Louis Feil’s Cancer Center and the Lab will provide a PSA screening. There is no cost for the screening, however, all men must bring a photo I.D.

Where is free speech in our schools today, how did it get there and more importantly where should we go in the future? This discussion will be led by Melvin Borowka, attorney, lecturer and former school board president.

Long Beach Boardwalk in Transition & Dreamcourts VideosThursday, July 7 at 1:30 p.m.Philip Snyder, Island Park filmmaker, will present two short films depicting Long Beach’s recovery, post Hurricane Sandy. One film celebrates the efforts to fund and rebuild the famed boardwalk and features interviews with local residents, politicians and its most famous former resident, Billy Crystal. The second film documents the dedication of the Dreamcourts near the Long Beach Recreational Center on November 10th, 2013.

Little Free Boardwalk LibraryLittle Free Libraries at the boardwalk have returned to the ticket booths on Franklin, Grand, Magnolia and Monroe. Additional Little Free Libraries will be installed during the summer at locations to be announced.
