Rt Rev Thomas A Corston, Ninth Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Moosonee.

St John's Anglican Church, Chapleau. First service held in it on March 29, 1908

R t . R e v . Thomas A. Corston, the ninth bishop of the Anglican Diocese of M o o s o n e e h a s announced that he will retire from the position effective December 31, 2013. In a letter to the people of Moosonee on May 8, Bishop Corston said: "Follow-ing a rather lengthy period of prayer and r e f l e c t i o n I h a v e decided that it is time for me to retire. I have informed Archbishop Colin Johnson that I will resign as Bishop o f M o o s o n e e o n December 31, 2013. At year’s end I will be just s h o r t o f m y 6 5 t h birthday and 40 years of ordination." Reporting on B i s h o p C o r s t o n ' s retirement the Angli-

can Journal said: " His retirement will coin-cide with the date that a decision to restructure the diocese into a mission area will take effect." B i s h o p Corston said in his letter: I do not think I can continue to pro-vide the leadership required much beyond t h i s p o i n t i n o u r Diocese’s restructur-ing process as outlined in the Vision Quest program. It is a good plan and I believe we have done all we can to secure our future as the Anglican commu-nity in this Diocese. "I am sure that much of the angst s o m e p e o p l e a r e feeling will settle once the Diocese is living in the new enti ty. At year’s end a part-time

Administrator will be appointed who will take over the adminis-trative ministry of the Area. While it is a good plan it is, hopefully, not forever and before too long the Diocese will feel comfortable in e lec t ing a new Bishop to oversee new growth and vitality in this northern Church." However, he is not leaving entirely as h e w i l l r e m a i n i n v o l v e d a s " t h e 'Episcopal Visitor' for the Mission Area as an assurance that Confir-mations and Ordina-tions are cared for and all parishes are visited. I wi l l a l so ac t as 'Consultant ' to the Archbishop and the Admin i s t r a to r fo r m a t t e r s t h a t m a y present themselves. I will easily be able to u n d e r t a k e t h o s e ministries from my Sudbury home for the foreseeable future or until a successor to this Office is chosen." To most people i n C h a p l e a u , t h e b i s h o p i s k n o w n

simply as 'Tom', the son of Frances (Jar-dine) and the late H e n r y ' C h i c k e n ' Cors ton . Both h is parents come from pioneer families of the community. Tom recently was presented with the Q u e e n ' s D i a m o n d Jubilee Medal by the Ontario Command of the Royal Canadian Legion, of which he is chaplain. In accepting the medal, he made special note of his f a t h e r w h o w a s wounded in action during World War II and all veterans. In his letter, he added: "I have enjoyed the brief time that I have been Bishop of this Diocese, in spite of the need for our having to restructure which is the cause of some sadness. I must say, however, that in my almost 40 years of ordained ministry the Lord has led me down roads I would never have gone otherwise. "It has been truly a remarkable

experience. The last few years as your Bishop have been a tremendously fulfill-ing opportunity to provide leadership in a changing and chal-lenging time for the Church in the north. I am so very thankful to t h e p e o p l e o f Moosonee for your support and I praise God for you all." H e w a s ordained deacon at a service in St. John's Anglican Church in 1974 and to the priest-h o o d i n 1 9 7 5 i n Timmins. He became bishop of Moosonee in 2010. As part of his retirement announce-ment, Bishop Corston shared his disappoint-ment with a lack of progress on plans for the future historic of St. John's, Chapleau. Although St. John's was established in Chapleau in 1885, the first service was held in the present church on March 29, 1908, making it the oldest ' p u b l i c ' b u i l d i n g

r e m a i n i n g i n Chapleau. The p re sen t Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church was opened on Christmas Eve 1919 after the o r i g i n a l c h u r c h b u i l d i n g w a s destroyed in a fire, and the Royal Canadian Legion Hall was built in 1920 and Chapleau Public School about the same time. B i s h o p Corston explained that in September 2012 an a g r e e m e n t w a s reached between him a n d s o m e o f t h e community leadership in Chapleau for the formation of a new Historical Society that would form a Board of Directors and apply for incorporation. That new Society would then take over the ownership of old St. John's Church which would plan to use the building as a future cultural and historical centre for the town, as wel l as a s i te for community groups to Cont’d on P.4

Cont’d from P.3gather, including a senior's centre. It was believed that it would be easier for such a group to apply for government funding to repair and upkeep the old church. He added that to ensure that the p r e s e n t A n g l i c a n congregation could

continue to use the church for worship, two representatives of the new society would be elected from the congregation. Indeed, at their annual congre-gational meeting in January, two members were elected to repre-sen t the Ang l i can concerns on the new Board.

"Unfortunately the plans have fallen through", he wrote, adding that in a recent conversation with the Mayor of Chapleau, Andre Byham, he l e a r n e d t h a t t h e leadership for the project decided that they were not inter-ested in undertaking the work required. " A t t h e moment, according to the Mayor, there is no one else in the town interested in taking over the projec t ," Bishop Corston said He said this is a "major disappoint-ment" as the present congregation is too small to manage the r e q u i r e d b u i l d i n g r e n o v a t i o n s a n d upkeep. However, he remains dedicated to d o i n g e v e r y t h i n g possible to assure the old church is properly cared for, but as he e x p r e s s e d t o t h e Diocesan Executive Council, this is a major d i l e m m a f o r t h e Diocese. "It would be

horrible to allow this r i c h p i e c e o f Chapleau's history to deteriorate to the point w h e r e i s b e c a m e necessary to demolish the beautiful build-ing." B i s h o p Corston concluded his letter: "Thank you so much for your prayers and friendship that have upheld me as your Bishop. Moosonee was my first home in the Church after ordina-tion and because of you it continues to hold tightly to my heart. For me it has been and continues to be, in the w o r d s o f R o b e r t Renison, our f i f th Bishop, 'Ye Happie Kingdom'. May God bless you as you serve our Lord Jesus Christ in the years ahead." I f a n y a r e willing to assist Tom in ensuring a positive future for St. John's, please feel free to contact him, or chat with members of the church in Chapleau. My email is mj.morris @live.ca

Chapleau Express, May 18, 2013 - Page 8

Let it be said that the idea was idiotic to begin with. Why would a juggler and a soprano decide, as fully consenting adults, to do a show together? In a court of law, of course, they might plead guilty for the sheer pleasure of it – or any other equal ly ridiculous defence. But never mind, the fact is they were infected with a stubborn desire to share their fantasy and folly. Despite their two diametrically opposed artistic backgrounds, their sensitivity and naiveté bring them innocently together. And given the strength of their passion, they will work like mad to deliver a great show from beginning to end,

despite numerous traps and challenges. And if sometimes during their stunts they seem a bit idiotic, don't be to quick to judge them. They're just being human, after all. T h e C e n t r e culturel Louis-Hémon is proud to present the variety show Some-times in life, things change by the com-pany Bande Artistique on May 25th at École secondaire Trillium. Bande Artis-tique is a circus design a n d p r o d u c t i o n founded in 2007. Its mission is to initiate a highly original blend of various stage arts in a circus context. This brand-new production Sometimes in life, things change puts a

juggler and a soprano together on stage in a setting imbued with fantasy and clowning. It has been presented at Montreal Comple-tement Cirque Festi-val and at La Tohu, la cité des arts du Cirque in 2011, as part of their regular season. The show is now touring in Canada. «This show is for the entire commu-nity of Chapleau! » said Diane Jean, «This show is a show that will make you laugh and because it is more of a circus concept there is no language barrier».
