Invasion of PolandSeptember 1, 1939 - October 6, 1939

• September Campaign, or 1939 Defensive War

• Germany Invaded Poland

• The Soviet Union invaded eastern Poland on September 17, 1939.

• From East Prussia and Germany in the north and Silesia and Slovakia in the south, German units, with more than 2,000 tanks and over 1,000 planes, broke through Polish defenses along the border.

• Ended on October 6, 1939- with Germany and the Soviet Union dividing and annexing the whole of Poland.

Attack on Pearl HarborDecember 7, 1941

• Hundreds of Japanese navy fighter planes attacked an American Naval base at Pearl Harbor.

• Destroyed 20 naval vessels, and 200 airplanes.

• 2,000 soldiers/sailors dead, 1,000 wounded.

• Roosevelt Declared war.

• Three days later; Japan, Germany, and Italy declared war on the U.S.

Japanese Capture Burma January - May, 1942

• The Burma Campaign in the South-East Asian Theater of World War II took place over four years from 1942 to 1945.

• During the first year of the campaign, the Japanese Army (with aid from Thai forces and Burmese insurgents) drove British Commonwealth and Chinese forces out of Burma, and occupied the country, forming a Burmese administration with little real authority.

Battle of the Coral SeaMay 4-8, 1942
