Parts of the Respiratory System

1. Nose/mouth – cilia trap dirt in nose2. Epiglottis – flap that covers trachea to

prevent food inside3. Trachea (windpipe) – air from throat to lungs4. Lungs – exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide5. Bronchi – tube that branches from trachea to

lungs6. Diaphragm – muscle below lungs that

expands/relaxes = breath

Breathing Process

1. Diaphragm expands > air enters the body through nose/mouth > epiglottis > trachea > bronchi

2. Bronchi divide > bronchioles > alveoli surrounded by capillaries > oxygen and carbon dioxide exchange = blood

3. Diaphragm relaxes > air leaves the body that contains carbon dioxide from the lungs
