21. Battle of Jutland—fought off the coast of Denmark, May-June, 1916. This fight between the British and the Germans was the only major sea battle of WWI (The Great War).

22.Battle of the Somme—fought in France, June-November, 1916. The British began to use tanks.

23. Second Battle of the Marne— July-August, 1918. Germany suffered defeat. This led to the end of the war.

24.Kaiser Wilhelm—the ruler of Germany.

25. On August 14, 1914, President Wilson proclaimed the United States a neutral country.

1. German submarines changed the rules of naval warfare. Unlike other naval ships, U-boats issued no warning to their targets.

Events that pushed the U.S into

WWI

2. The British cut the transatlantic cable connecting Germany and the U.S. All news from Europe came from London. Its pro-Allied bias helped shape the opinion of the American people.

3. May 7, 1915, a U-Boat sank the Lusitania off the coast of Ireland. (128 Americans died).

4. Wilson demanded that Germany stop submarine warfare.

5. Germany promised to stop sinking passenger ships without warning.

6. March 24, 1916, a German submarine sank the Sussex, a French passenger ship. The U.S. threatened to cut diplomatic ties to Germany.

7.Sussex Pledge—the Germany government again promised that U-boats would warn ships before attacking.

8. Pres. Election of 1916- Wilson a Dem. Ran on the slogan “He kept us out of war”.

Charles E. Hughes a Rep., criticized Wilson for not taking a strong enough stand against Germany.

Wilson won by a narrow margin.

9. Feb. 1, 1917-Ger. violated the Sussex Pledge.

10. Feb. 3, 1917-The U.S. broke off diplomatic relations with Ger. And began arming merchant ships.

11. The Zimmerman Note- A 1917 note by a German diplomat proposing an alliance with Mexico.

12. The Russian Revolution- Czar Nicholas II of Russia was replaced by a republican government.
