Theories of adulthoodTransition involves reaching maturity,
leaving home, new responsibilities, and other major life changes
Erikson’s stage: Intimacy vs. Isolation
What does that mean?
Intimacy refers to the ability to share one’s true self (good and bad) Involves taking risks, sharing things about
yourself
Those who cannot effectively resolve the tasks of intimacy are often left to isolation
Young adults are getting married an average of 4 yrs later than 30 yrs ago (25 for women, 27 for men)
Many young adults are living at home with parents
Emerging adulthood – perhaps an extended period of adolescence
Young Adulthood
TRANSITION TO PARENTHOOD Economics, finances, budgeting Children’s behavior, discipline, sibling
fighting Insufficient couple time Lack of shared responsibilities in the
family Communicating with children Insufficient “me” time Guilt for not accomplishing more Spousal relationships
(communication, friendship, sex) Insufficient family playtime Over-scheduled family calendar
This week your reading will be about:
Which two emotions tend to become more prominent in midlife?1. Depression and anxiety2. Anger and depression3. Guilt and depression4. Fear and anxiety
Fear and Anxiety Why do you think this is the case?
What is one of the biggest health fears of middle-aged women?
What are the leading causes of death in middle age?
“Midlife Crisis” phase actually does not have a lot of empirical support.
Midlife is often characterized as a time of questioning and internal focusMen are usually focused on their one primary
role (father, worker, spouse, etc.)Women may deal with role strain and conflict
as they are often juggling multiple roles (wife, mother, daughter, worker, etc.)
Quite often middle age adults will be caring for their adolescent children as well as their aging parents.
According to research by Steinbery (2004) the most difficult time for parents is when their kids are between 11 and 14 years old.
Parents and children are going through developmental changes – all of those changes lead to conflict and power struggles.
Approximately 20% of midlife adults are involved with caring for an aging parent While it may be a satisfying experience it can
be quite stressful and draining
A social support group is very important as it may provide all of the following functions to caregivers EXCEPT (choose one):
1. Much needed respite from caregiving2. Affirm and validate feelings about the
situation3. Encourage mutual sharing of coping
strategies4. Replace hope with a more reality-based
philosophy
The experience of reaching midlife affects individuals in different ways:
Some people approach their later years with anxiety and dread
Others see midlife as a time of renewal and opportunity

Documents posted in Doc Sharing that will help you with this project:
• The Perez Family Case Study
• Final Project Instructions – be sure to read the entire document.
• Final Project – step by step example
• Unit 7 Seminar PowerPoint (includes more detailed instructions for the final project).
•Start your final project now to ensure that you submit a quality paper.
•I have been very flexible in allowing you to submit late assignments, the term is coming to a close – there is little flexibility with regard to the final project – turn it in on time.
IntroductionAt least one full paragraph that gives
a BRIEF summary of Luis Perez’s life.
Of course, you can write more than one paragraph, but DO NOT copy the entire case study into your paper, just summarize (in your own words) some of the case study information about Luis Perez.
Based on your Ecomap of Luis Perez, explain the strongest influences on Luis’s behavior.
Do not just list the strongest influences from the Ecomap, give an explanation for each one.
I am sure that you will need to write more than one paragraph to fully explain the influences that you have selected.
Using Luis’s Ecomap as a guide, we are able to see positive and negative influences in his life which affect his behavior. Luis’s wife, Maria, is a very strong, positive influence that allows Luis to be the man of the family while she tends to their daily needs. Maria is the rock which gave Luis the strength to move from their native Argentina to America, where he will give his family a chance to make something more of their lives. Luis’s wife influences his “manhood”.
Explain how Luis’s eco-map might change as he transitions from middle adulthood to late adulthood.
This is a good place to use information from the book regarding the developmental tasks of middle vs. late adulthood (see Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development)
As Luis moves into late adulthood, his ecomap may change because his health will deteriorate which could influence his relationship with his wife. According to Ashford & LeCroy (2010), “older adults resist thinking of themselves as old” (p. 622); Luis may resist becoming more dependent on his wife because he does not feel as though he is the “man” of the house anymore – he may begin to resent his wife.
Do not just answer yes or no to these questions about prejudice, misconceptions, etc.
Even if you would not have any prejudices or biases, you can still fully answer the question about stereotypes and misconceptions.
This is a good place to use information from the ethical standards website regarding how clients should be treated and the role of the human service professional. [www.nationalhumanservices.org]
Make sure that you answer each of the questions – you have had similar questions on the discussion board regarding what you might learn from clients and how people can change our attitudes and behavior.
One document which includes:
Title/Cover Page Body of the paper (at least 5
complete paragraphs should take up about 2 pages)
Reference Page (last page)
You entire paper will be approximately 4 – 8 pages.
