The Resurrection All humans have a desire to overcome death
this is because we were programmed for eternal life. Through the
life, death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus, all humanity has
been given the opportunity to share in eternal life. The
Resurrection is the most important event in Christianity and in all
history. St. Paul says: If Christ has not been raised, then our
proclamation has been in vain, and your faith has been in vain.
Without the Resurrection whats the point of living a virtuous life?
Being a Christian?
Slide 5
Discussions How do you know that Jesus really rose from the
dead? How can I trust what Scriptures have to say about Jesus?
Slide 6
The Gospels Account Each of the four Gospels have a slightly
different account of what happened after Jesus died on the cross.
Mark the women discovered the empty tomb and met the angel Matthew
Pilate places guards from the tomb and the angel rolls away the
stone John has four separate accounts of Jesus appearing to
different people.
Slide 7
What the four Gospels have in common in their Resurrection
account The women disciples, then the men discovers that the body
of Jesus was missing from the tomb. The disciples who went to the
tomb found out from the angels that Jesus is no longer dead but
alive (Johns Jesus appeared to be a gardener and revealed himself
to Magdalen). Jesus appears to the twelve and various groups of
disciples to wish them peace and charged them to continue his
mission. The disciples were first shocked and fearful, but they
believe he has risen, but there also different from the way he was
(Human Body versus the Glorified Body).
Slide 8
Some characteristics of the Resurrected Jesus Cannot be easily
explained in human terms. He appears and disappears suddenly. Hes
not a ghost. He can be touched and eats with them. Hes different
enough that hes not immediately recognizable. Being in his presence
gives them peace and hope. Some other conclusions: Its not a
re-animated corpse (zombie). There was a transformation. Same
person, but new kind of existence. Our resurrected bodies will be
the same way.
Slide 9
Evidence for the Resurrection How do we know that the Gospel
accounts are true and that the Resurrection was not made up? 1.
Historical validity of the New Testament books and epistles there
are various ancient manuscripts of the same books/epistles from
different locations. 2. The Resurrection was a consistent belief in
the early Church experiencing the Resurrection was a key
qualification to be an apostle; its all four gospels, epistles of
St. Paul, and in the speeches in the Acts of Apostles. 3. Empty
Tomb Argument Jewish and Roman leaders did not produce a corpse If
the disciples stole the body and it was all a hoax, why did they
choose to die for it?
Slide 10
5. Women were witnesses Women were not considered reliable or
legal witnesses, why would the disciples have women discovering the
empty tomb if they were trying to fabricate a story? 6. The
Resurrection caused profound changes in the disciples They were
beaten, faced ridicule, and death and they continued to preach the
resurrection with conviction.
Slide 11
The Religious Meaning of the Resurrection If Christ has not
been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith
has been in vain. ~ St. Paul
Slide 12
Three things we know because Jesus rose from the dead 1. Jesus
is the Son of God The reason people believe this is because He rose
from the dead. St. Thomas My Lord and my God (John 20:28). 2. All
of Jesus teachings are true Without the resurrection, everything
that Jesus said would have been fake. 3. The Paschal Mystery tells
us that there is more to life Death is not the end, but a doorway
to life The suffering and pain of this life can be endured because
there is something more glorious and better that awaits us
Slide 13
Jesus Ascension Nicene Creed He ascended into heaven and is
seated at the right hand of the Father. The writers of the Gospel
had a hard time explaining what happened i.e. taken up to heaven or
carried to heaven What is the meaning of the Ascension? 1. Each
person has the possibility of spending eternity with God body and
soul. 2. Jesus is more present to us now body, blood soul, and
divinity. He is not limited by time and space.
