What are the special senses?

• Smell

• Taste

• Vision

• Hearing

• Equilibrium

Why are they called “special senses”?

• Their sensory receptors are located within relatively large sensory organs in the head, nose, tongue, eyes, and ears.

Some of the abbreviation associate with the special senses:

• PE Tube: pressure equalizing tube

• EENT: eye, ear, nose, and throat

• BC: bone conduction

• AU: both ear

• OM: otitis media

• EM: emmetropia

• XT: exotropia

• OS: left eye

• EOM: extraocular movement

• VA: visual acuity

Conclusion

• The capacity to see, hear, smell and taste allowed us to enjoy and survive in this world.

• The abbreviation is use to shorten the terms, so it is convenience for medical professionals.
