1946 new constitution organized Yugoslavia into six republics:– Bosnia & Herzegovina – Croatia– Macedonia– Montenegro– Serbia– Slovenia

War in Bosnia

• 1992 Bosnia and Herzegovina declared independence

– Serbs launched a war to stop the independence

– Serbs used ETHNIC CLEANSING to rid Bosnia of its Muslims and Croats

War in Kosovo• Serbs used ETHNIC CLEANSING to rid

Kosovo of its Albanian population

• NATO bombed Serbia to force them to stop the violence; Serbia withdrew.

Future of the Balkans

• Ethnic loyalties = tension

• War = refugees and poverty

• Some republics still want independence

Cleaning up Europe

• Pollution spreads!! Nations must work together!

European Environmental Agency provides the EU with reliable information about the environment

Water Problems

• Poland until 1990, 44% of cities had no sewage treatment plants = unsafe water

• Fertilizers = too much algae and plants; kills fish

• Oil Spills = kills thousands of birds and ocean life

These fish were killed as a result of living in polluted water.

Air Pollution

• Fossil Fuels = smog and ozone problems

• Polluted air = respiratory

diseases, lung cancer

and acid rain

THE EU

• After WWII Europe began to unify to improve their economies, EU established.

• Eastern European countries are less prosperous because they were once communist countries under Russia.

• But these countries offer new trade, more people, and a united continent.
