ÚKekulé structure– Kekulé was first to

propose a cyclic structure for benzene with alternating

ÚWe know now that all bonds are equidistant(1.397 A). This means that benzene is a resonance hybrid of 2 Kekulé structures and that π electrons are delocalized

ÚKekule: (1.34 + 1.48)/2 = 1.41 A

Aromaticity and Hückel’s rule (16-5)ÚTo be aromatic a molecule must:

– Be cyclic – Have 4n+2 π electrons

where n= 0, 1, 2, 3, … (or have and odd number of pairs of electrons)

438

– Electron must be in conjugation: alternating single and double bonds

4n + 2 = 6 n = (6-2)/4 n = 1aromatic

ÚPolycyclic benzenoids are aromatic:

ÚAll these compounds are members of a larger family called:

AnnulenesAnnulenes are compounds with conjugated double bonds and they can either be aromatic or not

Question:What is the name of this annulene? Is it aromatic?

Aromatic Ions (16-8)Other species such as ions can also be aromatic. Aromaticity is not limited to neutral molecule.

ÚAnother example is the tropylium ion which is also aromatic.

443

ÚAnd the cyclooctatetraene dianion

Practice Question

ÚAre the following ions aromatic or not?

Heterocyclic Aromatic Compounds (16-9)Heterocycles (one or more atom in the ring is not a carbon) can also be aromatic.

pyridine

ÚPyrrole is also aromatic.

ÚOxygen and sulfur can also be part of the aromatic heterocycles as shown in the following examples.

ÚNomenclature of benzene derivatives (16-13)Usually the name of compounds containing the benzene ring end with the suffix: benzeneOther common names are often used.

ÚA special nomenclature exists for disubstituted benzene derivatives, the terms ortho, meta and para are normally used.
