Chapter 2 & 3 Vocabulary
Objective- to visually define and understand journalism terms
Ethics- A system of moral principles
Credibility- The ability to inspire belief and trust
Objectivity- The ability to make fair, neutral observations about people and
events
Slander- A damaging false statement against another person or institution spoken or broadcast.
Fair Comment- a libel defense that protects journalists expressed opinion
of public figures

Localization- The writing of a regional, national, or even international story to
bring out the local angle.
Brainstorming- A method of obtaining many ideas in a short time
Advance- A story about a coming event.
Prominence- An element of news that refers to how well-known individuals
in the community.
Human-Interest Theory- A story that causes the reader to feel such emotions as sorrow,
pity, or amazement.
Random Sample- A sample of a population to be surveyed in which every member of the population has am equal
possibility of being included in the sample.
Timeliness- An element of news that has to
do with how new or current the even is.
Consequence- An element of news that refers to the importance of the
event.
Conflict- An element of news that involves tension, surprise, and suspense and arises with any good
news topic
Filter Question- A question, posed at the beginning of a survey, designed to eliminate
people who don’t belong to the desired
population
