FDR launched a new set of programs and reforms
called the Second New Deal
WPA – Works Progress Administration
Workers built or repaired about 800 airports, 125,000 public buildings,
75,000 bridges, and 50,000 miles of roads.
Social Security ActCreated a tax on workers and employers that provided monthly pensions for retired people. It also helped people with disabilities, the elderly poor, and children of parents who could not support them.
Unemployment InsuranceTax on employers to provide help for people that have lost their jobs.
Flint, MichiganUsed a technique called sit-down strikes to help negotiate their needs for 44 days.
John L. Lewis
Most influential labor leader in the 1930s. He was head of the United Mine Workers that wanted all workers, skilled or unskilled, to be able to join unions.
Wagner ActGuaranteed workers the right to form unions to bargain collectively with employers.
Fair Labor Standards ActBanned child labor and set a minimum wage of 40 cents an hours. ($7.50 today in the U.S.)
FDR wins a land slide victory by 61% of the votes for asecond term.
“Court Packing” PlanFDR asked the Congress to increase the amount justices from 9 – 15 saying they were overworked & needed help. Accused of packing the court.
As the 1930s drew to a close, world events caused Americans to turn their attention from domestic to foreign affairs. Dangerous forces were on the rise in Asia & Europe.
