What would you do?
If you were President during the Depression, what would you do to try restart the economy?
Franklin D. Roosevelt FDR promised a
“New Deal” for the American people.
Hoover ran for a second term but with the worsening economy people were looking for a new leader with new ideas.
Who was FDR?
Roosevelt was born into a rich family He was a distant cousin of former
President Theodore Roosevelt. In1905 he married his fifth cousin
Eleanor Roosevelt. He enjoyed a successful political carreer, then…
Paralisis In1921 he suffered from
Polio that left him paralized in both legs.
But paralisis could not stop FDR, and after a couple years, he returned to politics.
The return to politics
He was elected governor of NY in 1928 and again in 1930.
He never mentioned his legs and asked the press not to take pictures of his wheelchair.
Do you think someone in a wheel chair would have a harder or easier time running for President today?
Why?
FDR takes command FDR won the presidency by a
landslide. He entered office during the worst
part of the depression.
FDR’s two most important tasks were• Get people back to work• Restore the people’s confidence in banks
