Spain lost the Islands of Puerto Rico and Cuba to the United States in the Hispanic-North American War of 1898. Covered with armor from Spain, la Infanta Maria Teresa, left defeated from the port of Santiago Cuba, marking the end of the colonial period of Spain. 1898

Regiment 65 was founded in 1899, it was a infantry group comprised of puerto ricans that voluntarily fought in the first world war on the United States Side. They also participated in important campaigns in the Korean War. Four soldiers from the regiment received the Cross of Distinguished Service and 124 of them received the Silver Star.

1899-1953

After Fidel Castro took power in 1959, millions of Cubans took refuge in the United States. Between 1965 and 1973 more than 260,000 Cuban refugees arrived in the United States. In the decade eighty was a departure of a large number of people in boats. La flotilla de Mariel brought more than 125,000 Cubans to the coast of Florida.

Precolombino Los Tainos impressed the Spanish with their

complex and rich culture. Pots, jewelry, furniture and other pre-Columbian artifacts is found in the Museum of the Dominican Man in Santo Domingo.

Wood is used a lot in artesian work because it had a special value since pre-Columbian time.

Jungla Cubana was painted by the Cuban artist Esteban Chartrand (1840-1884). Educated in France, Chartrand was a modern painter for his tropical landscapes reflecting the European romanticism.

There is sadness because of the death of a child, but death is also celebrated in some cultures as part of the cycle of

The rooster is one of many pictures with the same protagonist, the rooster, painted by the Cuban artist Mariano Rodriguez (1912-1990) in the 1940’s. Mariano as he was known, considered his work were more expressionist than abstract because to begin his work he observered the reality of the objects.

The Cuban artist Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) studied art in Madrid, Spain. One can see the influence of surrealism of Pablo Picasso in this work, Rumblings of the Earth (1950).

2000

Oscar de la Renta, native of the Dominican Republic earned his fame in the modern world working in the house of Elizabeth Arden in New York.
