Started to move west for more land

Huron

Forced to move westward

Mid 1700’s disease & wars took a toll

on Natives

Southern frontier the Cherokees,

Creeks, & Chicksaws created a

powerful barrier to westward expansion

French Actions

Sent defenders to strengthen the Detroit

settlement & seize the Ohio valley

Built Fort Presque Isle (Erie) &

attacked & killed the men defending an

English trading post in the Ohio valley

Whoever controlled the forks of

where the Ohio, Allegheny, &

Monongahela rivers meet could

dominate the entire region

Religious Tensions

The Great Awakening

1730’s & 1740’s- Congregationalists led

a series of revivals designed to renew

religious enthusiasm & commitment

Sought to remind people of the power of

God & the authority of ministers

Energized people to speak for

themselves & to rely less on the

traditional authority of ministers &

books

Ministers preached that any Christian

could have a personal relationships

with Christ

Churches reorganize

New England change to Baptist

Southern Baptist & Methodist

Celebration of ordinary people

Drew people at the middle or bottom of colonial society

Great Awakening had long term

social & political affects

Attacked the idea that some

people are better than others

Many denominations split
