� Adulthood requires a shift in our attitude, behaviour, and outlook

� Adulthood also requires a change in our relationships with parents, friends, colleagues, and society

� We are socialized into these new adult roles

� Re-socialization: transition to a new role and we are then socialized in this new role

� Anticipatory Socialization: allows people to learn and practise role behaviour before actually taking a new role

� Most transitions in life are predictable and anticipated

� Therefore, we can take precautions, steps, and invoke strategies to deal with those transitions

� We can practice the roles before they happen

According to Erickson, an Indivduals identity contains Three aspects.. 1. Consistent sense of self 2. Realistic perception of the world 3. Sense of control over one’s life Before hand, Frued explained that a a individual with a mature ego has… The ability to modify one’s ideas and actions to fit in with appropriate situations These are what make up a secure and stable identity Self-Esteem – not only a sense of “who you are” but also a sense of “who you will be”

�  We form a sense of who we are based on feedback from others

�  We use the manner in which people react to us as an evaluation to who we are

�  These external evaluations form who we are

�  Like a mirror that reflects accurately what we look like, so do the responses of others reflect who we are

�  However, at times we distort what we see in a mirror just like we distort the responses of others

�  Therefore, we need to find reliable “mirrors” in order to develop a proper sense of identit

�  We develop sense of competence by engaging in meaningful and applicable tasks

�  School is the first step of separating from parents and feeling a sense of autonomy

�  Teachers give students feedback through assessment that highlights their skills, performance

�  Therefore, we need to give REALISTIC evaluations so you have a realistic sense of who you are and what you are capable of

�  Symbolic Interactionism suggests that school experiences challenge individuals to develop a consistent identity by interpreting feedback from a variety of different inputs

�  Adolescents are constantly taking in external evaluations and assessing them and the incorporating them into their identity
