Renewable & Non-renewable Resources
Renewable- a natural resource that can be used and replaced over a relatively short time. Ex: Trees
Non-renewable- a natural resource that can not be replaced or can be replaced only over thousands or millions of years. Ex: Coal
Recycling
Recycling- the process by which used or discarded materials are treated for reuse. Ex: reuse water bottles, you can also reuse
your Wal-Mart or Food Lion bags for your trash or to pick up animal feces.
Energy Resources &
Fossil Fuels
Energy Resources- natural resource that humans use to produce energy. Ex: Solar Panels, & Wind Turbines
Fossil Fuels- Non-renewable energy sources that form in the Earth’s crust over millions of years from the buried remains of once-living organisms. Ex: coal, oil, and natural gas.
Petroleum
Petroleum- or cruDE OIL, AN OILY MIXTURE OF FLAMMABLE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS FROM WHICH LIQUID FOSSIL FUELS AND OTHER PRODUCTS SUCH AS, ASPHALT ARE SEPERATED. Ex: oily recovery
Natural Gas
Natural Gas- gaseous fossil fuels

Coal
Coal- a solid fossil fuel formed underground from buried, decomposed plant material
Strip mining
Strip Mining- the process in which rock and soil are stripped from the Earth’s surface to expose the underline materials, to be mined
EX. Mined coal or tar sand
Air Pollution &
Smog
Air pollution- rain or snow that has a high acid content due to air pollution.
Smog- a photochemical fog produced by the reaction of sunlight and air pollutants.
