At the same time, many people use the microwave oven to reheat ready-prepared meals and snacks. People make less use of cooking equipment, so the meals that we choose are changing. There have been huge developments in ready prepared food for family meals such as ready meals, frozen dinners and takeaway food and this changes the way we live and eat. trends in families The number of family households with two parents and two children is declining. The number of single parents living with their dependant children is growing. There is a large increase in people living alone and people are living longer. Men, women and children often share the task of cooking the family meal. In the past many women stayed at home and took care of the shopping and household tasks, but now more women go out to work. Family members may work at nights, or be busy with activities, so not all the family eat meals together in the evening and at weekends. There is more fast food available to buy and eat quickly on the streets. Hot food like pizzas or Chinese meals can be delivered to the home. People eat more snacks and so do not sit down to meals as they used to years ago. What foods people are buying.

Shopping for food• Supermarkets supply a huge range of food products

along with other goods. They often have their own range of food products, which includes budget ranges with simple packaging and lower prices to help people save money.

• Some towns still have local butchers, greengrocers, bakers and fishmongers. The food can be fresher and sold at a good price.

• Corner shops are famous for opening for long hours, seven days a week. They sell a range of fresh, canned and frozen food and are handy for people who do not want to travel long distances for their shopping.

• Street markets and farmers’ markets offer good value for shoppers’ as the food is fresh and often sold at a lower price.

• Some businesses visit their local area and sell meat, fish and cheeses. You can also get mail order companies that will pack and send goods to your home.

Shopping onlineThe internet has made one of the greatest changes in the way we shop for food and other goods. You can order online and the goods are delivered to your home.

The advantages of shopping this way are that it saves time, travel and parking costs, and you can compare the costs on different websites. Disadvantages are that you do not see the goods before you buy, you have to return the goods if they are not suitable, and if goods are not in stock, they will not be delivered.
