Chapter 6.3BacteriaFUNC-

TIONSCell wall- help protect the cell (surrounds most bacterial cells)

Cell membrane- controls what passes in/out of the cell Ribosomes- produce proteins (in cytoplasm)

Nucleoid- DNA (genetic material)

Flagellum- helps a cell to move

    Basic Cell Shapes

The shape helps identify the type of bacteria

3.Spiral shaped

2.Rod-like Shaped

Chapter 6.3BacteriaTHE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE

2 KINGDOMS(ARCHAEBACTERIA & EUBACTERIA)

Archaebacteria I. Live in extreme environ-

ments a) hot spring b) acid c) intestines d) swamps e ) sewage II. Archaebacteria produce bad odors.

Eubacteria I. Don’t live in extreme environments(ex : live in bodies) a) help maintain Earth’s physical conditions b) help other organisms to survive.

Chapter 6.3BacteriaTHE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THESE

KINGDOMS AND OTHER KINGDOMS 6 kingdoms : Archaebacteria, Eubacteria, Protist, Fungi, Plants, and Animals.Fungi• generally all

multicellular,• heterotrophic

saprobes meaning they live off dead/decaying organisms for food

Plants • are multicellular

• eukaryotes• generally autotrophic-organisms.

Chapter 6.3Bacteria

Animals • Are

muliticellular • eukaryotes, • heterotrophic-

organisms.

Protists • most unicellular-

organisms. • Heterotrophic or

autotrophic. • Organisms that

don't fit into other kingdoms are classified here

• large variety of organisms in Kingdom-Protista.

• Unlike bacteria, protists are eukaryotes (organisms with cells that contain nuclei).
