SECTION TWO: Modeling of the Text

Activity 6: Study the following model of a recount text

Read the following recount and analyze the structure of the text

and the language features.

Earthquake

The day when I went home from

office was a terrible day. I was driving

along the coast road when the car suddenly

lurched to one side.

At first I thought a tire had gone

but then I saw telegraph poles collapsing

like matchsticks which flashed and burnt.

The rocks that tumbled across the

road almost hit my car and I tried to

abandon it.

When I got back to town where

many people crowded on the road, I saw

some houses collapsed, the bridge had a

crack, and the people said that the

earthquake happened a few minutes ago.

Fortunately, the earthquake did

not collapse my home. I thanked God

happily because my wife and children

were safe.

Activity 7: Analyzing the recount text

Analyze the schematic structure of the recount text.

The Spanish Armada

In May 1588 Spain was the most powerful country in the world. King Philip II of Spain was determined to conquer England and became its King. He ordered a large number of ships to be prepared to set sail and invade England.

At first Queen Elizabeth I ignored the rumors of a Spanish invasion, but soon she came to realize the great danger the country was in. And she made sure that England would be prepared for a battle. Eventually the Spanish were ready and over 100 ships set sail towards the English Channel.

As soon as the Spanish ships were seen from the English coast, fires were lit on the hills as a signal that the invasion was coming. When the Spanish ships got close enough the English navy closed in and a great sea battle began.

Once the battle began it was obvious to the Spanish that they would be defeated. Not only did the English sailors have stronger and more powerful ships, they also made terrifying use of fire ships. Boats were deliberately set ablaze and then sent amongst the Spanish fleet.

Al last the battle was over. A few Spanish ships escaped and eventually reached home, and many were sunk and to this day some of either wrecks still lie on the seabed in the English Channel.

Activity 9: Reading the recount text

Read the following recount text and answer the questions.

‘The X Files’ is one of television’s most popular shows, watched each

week by millions of people in over sixty countries.

The show was created by Chris Carter, a former magazine editor,

who always wanted to make a cool and scary television series. His idea for

‘The X Files’ came after he saw the results of a survey that said three out

of every hundred Americans believed that aliens had captured them.

Carter’s next step was to produce a pilot episode, which was to be

the beginning of the series. When it was shown on American television it

received poor reviews.

After a while the audience grew and ‘The X Files’ became popular

with both adults and teenagers. By this time Carter was able to spend more

on production.

‘The X Files’ has been nominated for many awards and continues to

attract a growing audience.

Activity10: Reading and identifying the recount text

Yesterday was a very good day for Rizal.

He looked for a new job a few days ago. I listed his name at a few

employment agencies and was given information about several positions, but he

wasn’t interested in any of these jobs. Last month he filled out an application form

for a new office in the city and arranged for a personal interview. Several

applicants were interviewed for this job, and I didn’t know if I would get it. This

morning someone from the office called up and asked him to see the manager at

eight o’clock. When he came into the office, the manager told him that he was

hired. He would begin working on the following Monday. He knew he would like

this job. He would be paid very well and my work would be extremely interesting.

He was feeling so happy, he had decided to cancel all his appointments for

the rest of the day, and he went right home to tell his wife the good news. His wife

was very happy to hear that. They were very happy that day. He started to work

with a happy day.

That’s what made him and his wife happy.

Activity 11: Reading and identifying the recount text

Read the following text and identify the linguistic features

Lightning struck many times by our houses last night during a rainstorm.

One flash of lightening hit at 10.45 p.m., and the second hit at 11:00 p.m. We

heard the sound of the thunder and we smelled the lightning in the air.

The first flash struck our neighbor’s house, and it acted like a lightning

rod. It pulled the lightning to it. When the lightning struck, it tore out a whole row

of brick walls. Our neighbors said it sounded like glass was breaking when the

bricks fell.

The second flash hit another neighbor’s tree. Because it was raining, the

tree didn’t start to burn. However, our neighbor said that the lightning killed the

tree.

We were lucky. The lightning missed our house. And we were all happy

that nobody was hurt.

Activity 12: Arranging a recount text

Arrange the following paragraph into a recount text.

Use the following recount text plan.

1. The trouble started when Mrs. Leslie Cady lost control of her car on a winding mountain road. The car fell down thirty feet from the road into the water. It rolled over once and landed right side up in rushing water. All these people were wearing their seatbelts. Nobody was hurt by the fall. However, they couldn’t leave the car. The water outside was too cold and too fast for safe swimming.

2. Rescue workers pulled a man, a woman, and two children from this cold, rushing water. The mother and her daughters got into trouble first. Their car drove off the road into the water. The man, a truck driver, almost died when he tried to save them.

3. The rescue started almost immediately. Another driver told the police about the trouble. The police called special rescue workers and a truck to pull the car out.

4. Next the other rescue workers arrived. They put on special suits to stay warm. They brought safety ropes, life jackets, tire tubes, and warm blankets. First they pulled the people out of the back window onto the top of the car. Then they swam with each person to shore. They saved Mr. Ruter, Mrs. Cady, and the little girls.

5. Finally all the people went to the hospital. Nobody was hurt badly. The rescue workers said that they all were very lucky to be alive. God blesses them.

6. The driver of the truck, Paul Ruter, arrived before the other rescue workers. Immediately he took a rope from his truck and he began to walk through the rushing water to the car. Then he got into trouble, too. The water was too fast, the ground was slippery, and he got caught in the ropes. He went under the water by the car. Mrs. Cady saw him and reached for his hand. She pulled as hard as she could and brought him to the car door.
