Summary 2
1. How do you define K-12?
K-12 program covers kindergarten and 12 years of basic education 6 years of primary
education 4 years of junior high school and 2 years of senior high school, the objective
of this are to provide life-long learners, provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts
and skills, to prepare graduates for tertiary education, to have middle level skills,
development, employment and enterpreneualship.
2. Would you like that the K-12 program be implemented in your school?
We’ve already started adjusting the schedule, the subject and the grading system of our
school.
3. How would react on those students and parents complain that K-12 is an added burden
to them?
It’s a change, and some people fear change, the school just has to explain what K-12 is
37
and what the benefits are to address their concerns, the school and the teachers may
explain the support they are extending to the students and parents, they may conduct a
day session to gather the parent and students to inform them about K-12 curriculum.
4. Some said that K-12 will address low achievement scores and poor academic
performance of elementary and high school students, what would you say about that?
There is a matching competency of skills and the readiness needed for colleges, so
somehow it will address low achievement scores and poor academic performance
5. How come that in the previous basic education, fresh high school graduates are not
hired by the employers?
They are believed not to fully equipped yet with whatever position they wished to be
hired because the subject which are needed are offered only in the tertiary levels.
6. Which would you prefer? The Basic Education with 10 years of education or the K -12
program with 12 years of education?
The K-12 program is believed to be of big help to the Filipinos aside from being one of
the last three countries offering the 10 year education program the students’ subjects are
aligned to whatever job they wish to have.
7. Do you think that the K-12 program would help the future of the students?
Yes as I have mentioned earlier it is aligned to whatever they wish to or the job they are
choosing in the future.
8. What are the importance that make the K-12 legit?
38
What makes it legit if I understood the question right, it is legitimate because it is asked
to be implemented by the Department of Education or the Government.
9. What subjects or lessons that are now possible to learn in K-12 and are not in the
previous basic education?
It depends on the curriculum that the student would want to enter in, for the grade school
levels we’ve adjusted the language subjects,
10. Why do you think is the reason why enhancing the quality of basic education through K-
12 is urgent and critical?
It is urgent because prior to curriculum guide the Philippines is one of only three
countries in the world and only one in Asia that still had only ten years in Basic
Education so obviously we are way behind the world’s requirement.
11. Do you agree that K-12 is not the solution to education and employment problems?
No
12. How will K – 12 help in ensuring employment for our graduates?
This K-12 program will be enough to prepare the students for work, certificates of
competency and national certification of course with the guidance and partnership with
technical education and skills development authority or TESDA, are also given after the
curriculum, this will allow the graduates to have middle level skills and will give them
opportunities to be employed, become entrepreneurs aside from this the partnership of
schools with companies were technical and vocational courses will be an opportunity for
students to gain work experiences while studying and a chance to be absorbed by the
39
companies.
13. Why do we need to go to universities and colleges if K-12 has all the lessons and
subjects that the student needs?
Colleges and universities are there to equip the K-12 graduates.
14. What would be the assurance that K -12 graduates will be employed?
The department of education has entered into an agreement with business
organizations, local and foreign chambers of commerce and industries to ensure that
graduates of k-12 will be considered for employment, matching with competencies and
standards will be done to ensure the skills needed to join the work world.
15. With K-12 implemented, would there be an added and removed subjects?
Yes
16. Many people say that they like K-12 but they are worried because of the additional cost
to families, how would you react to that?
And 17, 16 and 17 question are the related
17. There are some cases about the dropout problem due to the reasons that the parents
could not support the child’s financial needs, will that be also addressed by the K-12
curriculum?
Keeping students in school is a responsibility of the entire community to respond to this
the Department of Education and other government agency are collaborating to make
sure that all children stay in school through program like Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino
40
program of Department of Social Welfare and Development.
18. How can K-12 ensure the right job for the student?
Matching of competencies and standards will also be done to ensure the skills needed to
join the work world, entrepreneurship will also be encourage to and promoted in the
enhance curriculum to ensure that k-12 graduates can venture into other opportunities
beyond employment.
19. Besides increasing the knowledge of a student, what are the other effects of K-12 that
could affect the country?
Again as I have mentioned several times, K-12 is a change and it has it’s advantages
and concerns it would be of better help if when looked on the positive side of it and
future benefit of it like readily employment match with equipped skills and competencies.
I believe that concerns are just an adjustments needed to fully implement the program
like the guidelines and information that correctly be dissimilated to all the students and
parents it may also be the adjustment of schedules number of classrooms teachers and
companies needed to support the curriculum currently being processed by the
government in schools, for colleges and university which may be affected by the initial
implementation of k-12 program, the department of education again shall engage in
partnerships with them to use the existing facilities and teaching staff.
20. How would you find K-12 an Answer or a Burden?
With commitment cooperation and right implementation of the structure it is an answer.
41
CONCLUSION
K-12 will give students more time to master competencies and time for extra-curricular
activities, thus, allowing for their more holistic development. When they graduate they will
possess competencies and skills relevant to the job market. K-12 graduates will be better
prepared for higher education. They would be recognized abroad.
K-12 will develop the 21st century core skills, extend high school program for the
preparation of students for career and higher education, because secondary education is
designed primarily to provide the transition from school to work and from school to further
learning.
K to 12 will contribute to economic growth. Several studies have shown that the
improvements in the quality of education will increase GDP growth by as much as 2%. A better
educated society provides a sound foundation for long-term socio-economic
development.Graduates will be able to earn higher wages and/or better prepared to start their
own business. Studies in the Philippines have shown that an additional year of schooling
increases earnings by 7.5%.
It has its concerns but it would be of better help if when looked on the positive side of it
and future benefit of it, like readily employment match with equipped skills and competencies.
The concerns are just an adjustments needed to fully implement the program like the guidelines
42
and information that correctly be dissimilated to all the students and parents it may also be the
adjustment of schedules number of classrooms teachers and companies needed to support the
curriculum currently being processed by the government in schools,
For colleges and university which may be affected by the initial implementation of K-12
program, the department of education again shall engage in partnerships with them to use the
existing facilities and teaching staff.
K-12 will help the future of the students, ensure them, guide them and help them. They
will possess sufficient mastery of 21st century core skills; be emotionally developed and
competent to live a meaningful life; be socially aware, pro-active and involved in public and civic
affairs.
43
RECOMMENDATION
The following recommendations are derived from the findings and conclusion.
1. Parents should watch programs from television which will help them get a better
understanding of the K-12 system.
2. Government should entertain parent’s concerns and give right information to the public.
3. Government should have stakeholder Consultations, a Financial Study and a Curriculum
Review and Enhancement
4. Government should create a task Force to detail the K to 12 Implementation model
5. The school should entertain the concerns of parents through an open orientation.
6. The K-12 curriculum should include subjects that will boost the student’s personality to
face the problems generated from environmental dilemma and economic crisis.
7. Parents and teachers should help each other for the sake of the students. And should
have an income generating projects, and students should be encouraged to save
money.
8. Students shouldn’t be afraid of the change there are many advantages in their new
program, which will help them in the future.
44
9. Tailor co-curricular activities and community involvement program to student and
community needs.
10. Suggest mechanisms that will improve the student’s participation rate and retention rate.
11. We should form a K to 12 IEC Campaign
12. Other researchers should continue on studying the effectiveness of the K-12 system
before making it permanent
