Mountain Topics Algonquin Chapter ADK February-April 2020

The December 6th 2019 meeting at the Conservation Building was very well attended and the program very well received. Rob and Jaki Roy spoke about their trip to Columbia, South America, last spring [2019].

Their five day hike into the lost city [Ciudad Perdida— check it out on Google] in the mountains in the northern part of the

country was particularly interesting and generated a lot of Q&A. A few months after their visit Columbia experienced more political troubles with the guerillas and the government at odds as to how the “peace treaty” was being followed, or not. It is always interesting to see unrest present itself in a country, after visiting it, and have a deeper respect and understanding for the people and the issues they face.

Lola and I were in Tunisia a year before their uprising there and the overthrow of their long term dictator, Ben Ali. We could see the inequities, poverty and the strug-gles people were having trying to get by. However we never imagined that it would be the beginning of the “Arab Spring” that would soon follow with all of the turmoil in many countries across northern Africa.

On January 10th we were treated to an all Adirondack slide show of W.H.H. Murray by his great-great-great grandson, Randall Beach. Murray’s book, published in 1869 was a classic and best seller, and soon brought a lot of attention to the ADKs. It was the beginning of big changes to this magnificent wilderness. Thanks to Randall for his research and stories that he shared with us.

The Financial report [courtesy of Kay Washbourne’s efforts] indicates that the Algonquin Chapter is on a solid footing, positive cash balance and with member-ship constant and strong. Our business meetings have been kept short keeping in mind the wishes of the members. However, thanks to Mark DuBrey for his efforts trying to keep us up to date on all things “ADK chapter”. We are very fortunate to have a chapter with so many members sharing the work and I want to thank the Leadership including Anne Bailey, Steve Baker, Alix Heuston, Kimberly Smith, Marilyn Smith, and Chris Velsey along with those mentioned above. There are many more volunteers and members not named here that help keep our chapter going and vibrant. That phrase “it takes a village” comes to mind. Thanks to everyone!

Ray Johnson

ADK Board of Directors ReportDecember 7, 2019 in Lake George by Steve Baker1. We now have a new Executive Director. Welcome Michael Barrett!

2. Resolution 6f has been amended, so instead of having contiguous resolutions to move money from the Grow ADK Fund, it will be easier in the future to do so. This is a fund where undesignated bequests are put so there are funds available to use for the unbudgeted/unforeseen.

3. The 2020 budget was passed with some discussion beforehand, as well as projects suggested by staff.

4. An internet policy is now in effect for Heart Lake. There are 3 levels: Loj Guests Hotspot, Member Camper Hotspot and Public Hotspot in appropriate areas.

5. NY State Budget: We Love New York (ADK is one of the a part of the effort), is asking for growth in the EPF from 300 mil to 350 mil. Also we will be lobbing for increased forest rangers. We will be working with others on invasive species.

6. The annual meeting of the Board for organizational purposes was held. New officers were elected.
