PRESIDENTS MESSAGE

I would like to welcome everyone back to the 2020-2021 season of ASHRAE NJ!

I hope everyone was able to enjoy the summer to its fullest and stayed healthy along the

way during what was and continues to be a truly unprecedented year.

It is hard to issue any correspondence at this time without at least touching upon

SARS-CoV-2, and the effect the COVID-19 pandemic has had on the world. Although I look

forward to this years’ meetings to instill a little bit of normalcy in our lives, it is clear the

ASHRAE meetings we are used to will be different.

The Board of Governors and I will be doing our best to communicate the latest and greatest

plans in hopes to keep ASHRAE valuable to you while safeguarding the health and wellbeing

of the members. With that said, I truly hope we will be able to get back to normal sooner

rather than later and we can enjoy the full slate of our normal meetings and events.

For those of you whom I have not met in the past, here is a brief bio:

I am a graduate of the University of Maryland, Clark School of Engineering, and have worked at Carrier Corporation for nearly

13 years. My career path at Carrier has taken me from project estimation, engineering design assistance, to applied equipment

sales in both the Pennsylvania and New Jersey markets, a role which I currently hold. I live in Bucks County, PA with my wif e,

Jamie, and our three young children.

It is a privilege for me to serve as the Chapter President this year. I would like to give a huge “Thank You” to Brian Glynn,

the outgoing chapter president, for his accomplishments last year. Under Brian’s leadership, the Student Activities and YEA

committees continued expanding reach to the NJ student community. We solidified our student Chapter at Stevens Institute

of Technology and began working toward developing a chapter at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT). Brian also

led the charge putting together our 75th Anniversary Gala which was a huge success. Together with committee chairs and

board of governors, the 2019-2020 campaign was a win and I can only hope to continue the success of the chapter this year.

As our industry is pushed to the public forefront due to our expertise regarding the built environment, I take great pride in

knowing that our collective participation in ASHRAE is directly contributing to getting society back on a path to normalcy. I

encourage you to spread the word about ASHRAE to anyone who is interested since the topics we often speak about are now

resonating outside of our normal circles and the information we discuss can be very useful to all.

No example is as apparent as the creation of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force in late March of this year. Since its inception,

the task force has given multiple lectures, published and updated various guidelines relating to building re -entry, and actively

reviews technical questions submitted by the public.

This month, for our “Welcome Back” meeting, I am honored to welcome one of the members of the ASHRAE Epidemic Task

force, Sarah E. Maston P.E., BCxP, LEED AP . Sarah will be speaking on the current guidelines the task force has created

in response to the pandemic, “Managing Your HVAC Systems to Help Mitigate the Spread of SARS-CoV-2 In Buildings”. I am

grateful for the opportunity to have Sarah discuss this truly important topic with us firsthand.

We look forward to your continued participation and hope to see you soon!

ASHRAE GLOBAL HEADQUARTERS OUR NEW ADDRESS: 180 TECHNOLOGY PARKWAY NW, PEACHTREE CORNERS, GA 30092

Why is ASHRAE headquarters moving? At the 2018 ASHRAE Annual Conference in Houston, 2017-18 President Bjarne Olesen announced that ASHRAE was in the process of

selling its headquarters building and will move to another location in Atlanta, GA. ASHRAE is a business and from time to time businesses have to address office space issues. ASHRAE is addressing this issue because

Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA), one of the largest healthcare providers for children in the country, is building a s tate-of-the-art medical campus that will surround the current ASHRAE headquarters building. In fact, the ASHRAE facility will become part of that campus upon the culmination of the real estate purchase process. CHOA's construction of its entire medical campus at the site is

expected to be complete in 2026, with a total investment of up to $1.2 billion. When completed, the CHOA North Druid Hills Campus will serve children and teenagers arriving from all 50 states, as well as internationally.

Because ASHRAE’s current headquarters is an integral part of CHOA’s North Druid Hills Campus master plan, CHOA proposed to purchase ASHRAE’s headquarters with an agreement to allow ASHRAE staff to stay in our current building through October 2020. ASHRAE’s Board of Directors took into consideration the logistical challenges for ASHRAE staff and visiting members if we were to

continue to occupy the present building with major construction occurring “on all sides” of the building through 2026. Finall y, ASHRAE leadership negotiated the October 2020 date for vacating the present building so that there will be time to secure and renovate a new headquarters building, with the goal of exceeding the sustainability standards incorporated into our present facility.

Where will the new headquarters be located? ASHRAE’s Headquarters Ad Hoc Committee has worked to determine the best location for the new headquarters in the metro Atlanta

area. Similar to buying a home, there are a number of items to be concerned about in the process, including employee transit to and from work, access to the airport for volunteers and staff, access to public transportation, high technology area, close proximity to hotels and restaurants, and low impact on existing employee travel time were all considered. Programmatic needs were also considered including

the meeting and training space to benefit staff, visiting members, our local chapters and possibly additional space to suppor t existing program expansion and new programs, which ASHRAE leadership may deem beneficial to add in the future. The Ad Hoc Committee additionally sought to identify a new site with ease of access and convenience, including nearby amenities for ASHRAE members , visitors

and staff. Through the Ad Hoc Committee’s efforts, ASHRAE has identified and set in motion the purchase of an existing building – 66,700 square

feet in size – in the modern Technology Park complex in Norcross, North Atlanta.

ASHRAE TECHNICAL COMMITTEE RELEASE TECHNICAL BULLETIN ON EDGE

COMPUTING DESIGN AND OPERATION

ATLANTA (September 25, 2020) – ASHRAE Technical Committee (TC) 9.9 (Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces and

Electronic Equipment) has addressed the unanticipated risks associated with edge computing design and operation through a new

technical bulletin, “Edge Computing: Considerations for Reliable Operation.”

"ASHRAE TC 9.9's first edition of Thermal Guidelines for Data Processing Environments (2004) was both groundbreaking and

foundational. Prior to this publication, there was no global, unified source for environmental conditions (e.g. temperature). Data centers

relied on recommendations from each IT manufacturer. The Thermal Guidelines book became the global de facto standard, ultimately

opening the door for economizers in data centers. Edge computing/digital infrastructure has no global, unified source for environmental

conditions until now. This publication is groundbreaking, foundational, and will become a de facto standard," said Don Beaty, first chair

of TC 9.9.

“Edge computing can expose IT equipment to adverse environmental conditions that compromise reliability and uptime. ASHRAE TC

9.9 has carried out years of R&D in collaboration with leading IT equipment manufacturers on best practices to mitigate these risks. I

believe this publication is a trailblazing work that will serve as a blueprint for all new edge deployments.” said Jon Fitch, lead author of

the technical bulletin.

ASHRAE Technical Committee 9.9, Mission Critical Facilities, Technology Spaces and Electronic Equipment, is composed of a wide range

of industry representatives, including but not limited to equipment manufacturers, consulting engineers, data center operators , academia,

testing laboratories, and government officials who are all committed to increasing and sharing the body of knowledge re lated to data

centers.

AIR BALANCE & ZONE DAMPERS

Young Regulator Company is widely known for their innovative dampers and controls that provide damper control where access is

severely limited. Their products also minimize balancing damper noise in the occupied space by enabling dampers to be located away from air outlets. ASHRAE research concluded that adding a fully open damper at the neck of a diffuser can add up to 8NC to the catalog NC level and over 10NC as the damper is closed down. Young Regulator products enable locating dampers 5 or more feet

away from air outlets to minimize damper generated noise and eliminate oversizing air outlets (resulting in poor air distribution) to provide acceptable sound. Their innovative solutions also provide balancing damper control where hard ceilings and other site limitations prevent direct access.

Young Regulator pioneered the use of Bowden cable solutions in the United States in 1950 and has developed many different controller/damper configurations for ceiling and wall access with cable lengths up to 50’. Cable controllers can be concealed above

the ceiling, in plenums or walls or in mechanical rooms. Applications that require access up to 1,000’ away are configured us ing a damper with a 9 volt dc actuator, plenum rated cable between the actuator and an RJ-12 ceiling or wall jack. Their hand held, battery powered 9 volt dc positioner with position indication adjusts the damper position and is then disconnected and stored for fut ure

balancing needs.

Young Regulator also offers standalone zoning systems that consist of round and rectangular duct mounted dampers or VAV diffusers,

pre-installed auto changeover temperature sensor, and control board to interface with a room thermostat. Simple low voltage control wiring between the damper or diffuser and the room thermostat is all that is required.

Constant volume regulators offered by Young Regulator are used to maintain constant exhaust or supply airflow regardless of changes

in duct pressure or due to stack effect in multi-story buildings. They are available as round or rectangular dampers or as devices to slide into ductwork and are factory or field calibrated. Capacities range from 10 CFM to 7600 CFM.
