Biology

Biology is the science of life

We will study, how living things interact with one another, the history of life, and the role humans in preserving the natural environment

Metabolism

Chemical reactions that take place in only living organisms that help living things function

Ex: grow, reproduce, and make energy

Characteristics of Life

1. Made of one or more cells

2. Displays organization

3. Grows and develops

4. Reproduces

5. Responds to stimuli

6. Has a metabolism

7. Maintains homeostasis

8. Adaptations evolve over time

1. Made of 1 of more Cells

The cell is the basic unit of life

Ameba and paramecium are unicellularorganisms

Paramecium

2. Displays Organization

Have structures with specific functions

Ex: Heart – pump blood

Stomach – digest food

Page 11: Characteristics of Life - Commack Schools of life19.pdfCharacteristics of Life 1. Made of one or more cells 2. Displays organization 3. Grows and develops 4. Reproduces 5. Responds

3. Grows and Develops

Growth results in increased mass

Development results in different abilities

Ex: getting bigger (growing) learning to crawl then walk (developing)

3. Reproduce

Organisms must be able to pass along traits from one generation to the next

Page 13: Characteristics of Life - Commack Schools of life19.pdfCharacteristics of Life 1. Made of one or more cells 2. Displays organization 3. Grows and develops 4. Reproduces 5. Responds

5. Respond to stimuli

Reactions to internal or external stimuli are called responses

Ex: Loud Sound = Scared Class

Stimuli=Loud sound

Response= scared, increased heart rate, scream, jump

Page 14: Characteristics of Life - Commack Schools of life19.pdfCharacteristics of Life 1. Made of one or more cells 2. Displays organization 3. Grows and develops 4. Reproduces 5. Responds

6. Requires Energy

Some organisms must take in food

(heterotroph or Consumers) Animals

Some organisms make their own food

(autotroph or producers) Plants

7. Maintain homeostasis

Keep internal conditions stable

Ex: People sweat to keep their body temperature from rising to high

Page 16: Characteristics of Life - Commack Schools of life19.pdfCharacteristics of Life 1. Made of one or more cells 2. Displays organization 3. Grows and develops 4. Reproduces 5. Responds

8. Adaptations evolve over

time

Adaptation – inherited changes that occur and help an organism survive

Evolutions involves the changes in an adaptation
