Katniss Everdeen is a young 16 year old girl from district 12, one of the poorest, coal mining districts. Her father was killed in a mining accident years earlier and it is now just her, her mother and her sister Primrose. She is a very strong minded young woman, who can sometimes be very stubborn and is very firm in her opinion of the Capitol. She is wildly protective of her little sister, and does not have the strongest relationship with her mum. Her sarcasm and hard exterior make it difficult for the other characters to relate and like her, but once they put their trust in her she never once lets them down. Peeta Mellark is the second tribute chosen along with Katniss and opinions change a lot about him throughout the story. He is shown as a sweet, sometimes naïve boy who is still learning how to be a man. Katniss is reluctant to become close to peter, believing he is using her, although it is later revealed Peeta was completely genuine in his feeling. Peetas kind, creative nature begins to win over the characters, making him an increasingly popular tribute. Although he has made mistakes in the past, throughout the film he continues to better himself and prove he is worthy. Haymitch Abernathy is a middle-aged, bitter man who was once a victor of the games. As a result every year he mentors the tributes of district 12; guiding
