On March 10, JPOP sensation
JIN AKANISHI came to town for his
JAPONICANA World Tour, held at
Vancouver’s The Centre of Performing Arts.
The show opened with guest performers,
Emmalyn Estrada and Joseph Vincent, to
fire up the crowd in anticipation for Jin’s
appearance. With energy of these two, fans
rose to their feet in excitement, welcoming
Jin upon his grand entrance. Showcasing
his latest R&B and Hip Hop hits from
JAPONICANA album released in March.

Jin performed a very generous
offering of track, keeping the energy alive all
throughout the concert. His encore finisher
“Seasons” was a delight to the crowd, sung
in Japanese - a tad of fan service for our
local community here. A quick Meet & Greet
was held after the concert. We’re grateful
that Jin Akanishi has chosen Vancouver as
one of his stops for his first US World Tour
JAPONICANA. It was a great night for Jin
Akanishi, as he bid farewell to the fans:

After a night of exhilaration taking the audience’s breath away on stage, AX3 also had the great pleasure of catching a quiet moment with Jin to discuss his experience in North America, inspirations and future plans.
Since your departure from KAT-TUN, with you pursuing a solo career, things have changed for you in the past 2 years or so. What’s a “day in the life of Akanishi Jin” like?
I’ve been recording my album, JAPONICANA, and filming for 47 Ronin – that’s coming out in November of this year. After filming for 47 Ronin, I’ve been working on my album for 6 months. I’m just basically in the studio everyday.
So you must have long working hours!
Not really, it’s really short, but I had a great time working with Ameri-can producers and musicians.
Where do you get your inspiration for your music? Are there any genres of music that you would like to try out?
Everywhere. Life, people, countries… Anything. Music is not just about genre.
You mentioned earlier that you were collaborating with North American musi-cians. Are there any other musicians that you would like to work with in the future?
I would like to work with Lil Wayne! Generally, any of the artists from Young Money.
You recently collaborated with Jason Derulo, how was that experience?
It was a great experience, and I’ve learned a lot of things working with him. I liked hearing him sing his name. You know, like the “Jason De-rulo” at the beginning of the song. I heard that Jason has stopped doing that - my song might be the last song that he did that on.
You’ve been back and forth from Japan and America for a while now. Has that influence or changed the way you make your music?
Music in Japan and America is totally different. The way they compose the music is just, different. It’s hard to translate Japanese to English.
Is that a challenge for you then? Achieving the flow of the lyrics in English as you would in Japanese?
Yeah. I’m not that fluent in English, I make mistakes. I have friends that would check them for me, and fix my lyrics (grammatically). I always have friends that would help.
Any plans after your JAPONICANA world tour?
I have the movie, 47 Ronin, coming out and I’ll be promoting the movie.
What gets YOU CHARGED?
My personal life is what gets me charged. Just being able to step down, and hang out with friends and families really motivates me and that’s what gets me charged.

Very few places offer late night Japanese cuisine in
Vancouver, so naturally, Koto Izakaya is a blessing
for night owls seeking solid and delicious sushi.
Tucked in a plaza nearby Lansdowne Centre in
Richmond, this small little joint has a fairly decent
menu that offers your typical appetizers, sushi,
and hot dishes. With the food arriving quickly and
always fresh, the service is also top-notch and
friendly.
With its small interior, Koto Izakaya is a very
comfortable and cozy spot to enjoy some
Japanese food. The ambience is nice; you can
probably even do some studying while you down
that fresh salmon sashimi!
101-8171 Alexandra Road, Richmond, BC
Hours: Everyday 5:30 pm to 2:30 am
KOTO IZAKAYAAs one of the few 24 hour joints in Vancouver,
Lucy’s Eastside Diner offers a wide variety of
traditional North American diner cuisine in a
relaxed and casual atmosphere. Whether you’re
looking for simple bacon and eggs, a juicy burger,
or a creamy milkshake to reenergize yourself
with, this nostalgic restaurant has it all!
We highly recommend their Three Little Pigs
eggs benedict ($10) with a milkshake ($5).

If you’re extremely hungry and craving that simple
bowl of hot and delicious pho, mark Truong Thanh
on your map because this 24 hour Vietnamese
restaurant offers one heck of a late night meal.
Featuring your standard Vietnamese fare, this
place provides a very warm and welcoming
atmosphere alongside friendly service and a
clean interior – something that most Vietnamese
restaurants aren’t exactly known for.
With everything on the menu under $10, we
highly recommend the pho and spring roll combo
for $8. It comes out steaming hot and quick, and
the pho comes with plentiful amounts of meat.
The other dishes here are equally as delicious and
are generously sized.

As we all know, April is exam month, and students

of Vancouver’s top late night restaurants to keep

With three convenient locations throughout
Vancouver, this chain of traditional Korean
restaurants really hits the spot. Literally
translated as “mother-in-law’s house”, Jang
Mo Jib boasts an impressive menu that offers
everything from bulgogi, bibimbap, to galbi.
Most dishes on the menu are $10 to $20, but
the value is great with all the large portions. As a
standard at Korean restaurants, you’re also given
a variety of sidedishes (known as banchan) that
include kimchi and sweet potatoes.
Running well into the night, Jang Mo Jib is a
great place for some late night grub, as well as
celebration drinks after your exams!
If you feel like grabbing some Chinese food after
a night of cramming, look no further than No. 9
at Lansdowne Centre. Serving up a variety of
Chinese and Chinese-Western cuisine, this Hong
Kong style café is open 24 hours, making it an
ideal place to stop by late into the early morning.
Offering a selection of Chinese trademarks such
as congee and noodle soup, No. 9 also serves up
flavourful dishes such as barbequed duck and
chili garlic fried chicken wings, both of which are
favourites amongst regulars. Most dishes are
priced around $10, but the portions are generous
enough to warrant the cost.

Kingsway and Butler
Avenue in Burnaby, this
restaurant offers your
typical Taiwanese cuisine
in a classy and modern
atmosphere. With loud

massive 18-inch high

warned that the prices are a bit steep with dishes
ranging from $10 to $15 each, but if you have

12 CHARGED EATS 604 LATE NIGHT FOOD CRAVING
Although the weather in the Lower Mainland doesn’t want to admit it, spring is here — and for many, that means exams, graduation, and job hunting. With droves of post-secondary students about to either hit the career path or look for casual summer work, how can people get a leg up on the competition in an increasingly tough job market?
Kevin Rolston, department chairman for the Co-operative Education department at Langara College, sees his fair share of students looking for employment every semester. He says the first thing to do is make sure you’re looking for the right position.
“The job you seek should fit into you overall career plan. It is far too easy to take the first thing that comes along,” says Rolston.
That means even if you’re just looking for something temporary to pay off bills or save up some extra spending money, find something that will build up transferrable skills and make you attractive to a future employer in your dream job. Serving at a restaurant may not seem that useful in the long run, but it can build up customerservice, multi-tasking, and problem-solving skills that are useful in many industries.
After you’ve narrowed down what you want to do, it’s time to polish the threestaples of every job search — resume, cover letter and, if you’re lucky enough,
interview preparation. The key for the first two, says Rolston, is tailoring. “Focus the content of the resume and cover letter on what you have accomplished for past employers, not just on the duties you performed,” he says.
“Target both documents so that they directly respond to the job posting. Do not just send one cover letter and resume to every employer.”
Be sure to emphasize “soft skills,” added Rolston — something that he says Canadian employers place tremendous value in. That means highlighting anything you’ve done, either academically or volunteer/work-related, involving things like teamwork, communication, interpersonal skills and judgement. Link those qualities to qualifications that the specific posting asks for.
Okay. You’ve spent a few hours customizing and sending out a batch of applications, and now you’ve received that much-anticipated call or email requesting an interview. It may feel like a cause for celebration, but you’ve still got to wow your potential boss enough to hire your first! So what exactly should you do to get ready?
Do:
1. Be prepared, but not rehearsed. Read the job description carefully and try to anticipate what will be asked.
THEGUIDE TO JOB HUNTING SUCCESS
2. Prepare four or five SPECIFIC examples for behavioural-based questions. Your examples should illustrate what you have accomplished in applying soft skills in the workplace.
3. Relax, smile and be natural — and listen carefully to what you are beingasked.
Don’t:
1. Give answers that you read from a book or website.
2. Go into the interview without knowing what the company does or what the job is about.
3. Either give short answers that don’t give the hiring manager anything to goon OR give excessively long answers that may cause the interviewer to lose focus.
Following these steps should help you stand out from the rest of the pack, which is vital considering the amount of resumes from talented individuals that come across a manager’s desk everyday. One final tidbit of advice offered by Rolston is to go out and get some experience. Attending classes is not enough — employers are interested in your extracurricular activities. Go volunteer, get involved in campus life and participate in co-op programs.

journey started when I was 7, the first time I
hit the stage. I became
the lead in the school
play and sang a solo in
front of an audience
in the gymnasium—it
was the most amazing
experience in my life. From
that moment on, I knew
that’s what I wan¬ted the
rest of my life to be like.
That feeling, that rush
from being onstage, and
hopefully inspiring others
in the same way other
artists have inspired me.
Now I’m working very hard in Vancouver to
build a name for myself. I have a bit of a fan base
internationally already, so I’m just trying to blend
the two worlds.
Would you say your singing abilities were an
inherited talent, or was it an acquired skill?
Over the years, how did you develop your vocal
abilities?
I think that enough of it might be inherited,
but you can only do so much with what you’re
given. After that, you have to work hard. I took
vocal lessons, went to school through the Royal
Conservatory of Music. And I do practice a lot. I
believe that it is 90% trained and 10% inherited,
like being able to hear tones.
You have gone through many experiences of
competing, and being part of various musical
groups prior to starting your solo career. What
were some of the most memorable experiences
before the start of your career?
My most memorable experience was when I
was in Jabulani, a West African musical group.
In elementary school I learned how to play the
[Zimbabwean] Marimba, and fell in love with it.
I joined a world music summer camp, and of the
two years that we did the camp, a manager hand-
picked a few of us to be in this band. I got the
chance to play with my band mates in a sold-out
show at the Commodore Ballroom, which was
such a great experience.
You have said, “Music has an incredible power
to unite people and places.”
Please elaborate.
It’s the cliché saying that
music is universal, and it
really is. My friends may not
understand the languages
I sing in, but they still really
enjoy my music videos. I
think that sparks an inter-
est for them to learn more
about that culture. It’s the
same way around that my
own music, being born and
raised in Vancouver [in the
Western ordeal] with a large Asian influence,
that it opens their eyes to other cultures. I think
that music is a really great way to bring people
in without a specific reason or motive. Cultural
barriers are not an issue.
Your performance and co-production ‘Keh
Dena’ became an International chart topper.
How was it like co-producing this project, and
helping support Alamgir’s Health Fund?
It was an interesting opportunity: I didn’t seek
it, it kind of came to me. Basically my attitude
from the beginning was “why not”. Because I
have been classically trained, I’m used to having
to learn languages that I don’t speak. In the past
I’ve done German, Italian, Spanish, Cantonese,
and Mandarin, but I never thought to do an Urdu
song. It was just an opportunity to have a lot of
fun, and it’s made me grow in so many ways, just
because I’ve been able to pull a lot of influence
from the new genres of music I’m listening to
now.
And Alamgir, who wrote the song back in the
day, he’s like the Elvis of the Middle East. He was
not in the spotlight for a little while just because
he’s suffering with health problems [both of his
kidney’s have failed and he’s currently on dialysis
three times a week]. Doing with video with him
as his “comeback” and just to show people that
although he’s sick and needs your help, he can
still do this, and it was great to be a part of it.
You have recently released a brand new
original single titled “It’s You,” and you are also
currently recording your debut EP, ‘The Set List
Project’ which is due in 2012. What should we
expect in your upcoming release?
You can expect a lot more soul, a lot more funk.
When people ask me what genre I am, I say I’m
acoustic soul because that’s the closest I can get
to what I think my genre is. The last two releases
are a bit more pop acoustic than acoustic soul.
The last four that I’m adding onto the EP are
influenced by funk and soul. They’ll be a lot more
fun; something that people can dance to and
have a good time with on stage. That being said, I
think it’s really important to fuse genres. [If not],
you’re really just cookie cutting. I can’t lie and
say that my influence comes from jazz or soul; I
like to draw influences from across the board. I
can’t really categorize it, but it’s just me.
How are you able to relate your current music
career to your undergraduate studies in
Communications at SFU? Why do you think
it is important for musicians and artists to be
educated?
Going through school in general has taught me
to be dedicated, to see projects from start to
finish. It’s taught me to be patient, to be willing
to learn things from other people, and accept
the fact that I don’t know everything, and that’s
a good thing. Communications has helped me
specifically because although I would like to say
that I’m a musician and all I do is sing and play
guitar, there is a business side to it. It’s helped
me dip my hands into media relations, PR and
marketing. I have a minor in publishing so I
know how to use programs such as InDesign
and do a little bit of design work. This helps me
develop my creative side and also the business
side of things. Overall it’s helped me become a
stronger person. I think that [going to school is
a good idea] if it’s fitting, but some people aren’t
just school people. You could study music as an
alternative, but I didn’t do it.

Social media plays a big part in today’s musical
industry for artists to interact with their fans.
Tell us how you connect with your fans through
your blog and various social media channels.
Social media has really opened many doors for
me; it’s helped me meet people that I wouldn’t
normally meet. That’s not just online, but it leads
to meeting people in person as well. In terms
of fans and distribution, it does help a fair bit.
I’m an independent artist, so a lot of my job is
promotion. Fans interacting with me and telling
me what they want helps me in so many ways.
Social media plays a huge role in that, especially
on YouTube.
You have come a long way as an artist, and
there are many people out there that share
common goals and dreams as you. What advice
do you have for being striving in becoming a
successful singer or songwriter?
Not to sound harsh, but don’t be naïve about
the business. Obviously work on your craft, but
don’t think you’re the best and rely solely on
your talent: have the drive and determination to
do what you do. It’s really obvious to see an artist
who’s doing it for fame and who actually loves
music. Being a good person obviously helps too,
and just keeping level headed and accept the fact
that you may not be the best at what you do, but
that’s a good place to start. Meeting other artists
and listening to other performances will help
you grow and you will continue to grow and take
it all in your arms and embrace it. You’re always
inspired and always evolving.
Where do you see yourself in five years? Other
than being a singer and songwriter, have you
thought about pursuing other things in life?
One of the most enjoyable aspects to me of
being a musician is performing. Hopefully I’ll be
on an international tour, travelling and meeting
all these people who are listening to my music
around the world.
What gets you CHARGED to sing songs or write
music?
People. The people that contribute to my life and
whose lives I can contribute back to. The reason
why I didn’t say music is that living all alone is
probably the scariest thing in the world. If I had
a stereo with music but was alone, that wouldn’t
keep me going. It’s that constant interaction of
meeting new people and learning from them,
and being inspired by other people—that’s what
keeps me going in all aspects of my life.
