Kindergarten Parents and Students, This activity calendar is meant to provide enrichment reading, writing and math activities
for students working above grade level as assigned by your teacher. The Enrichment
Kindergarten Calendar is to replace the reading, writing and math activities for ONE of
the Kindergarten calendars. The list of activities for the day does not need to be
completed all at once. Please make sure your child is taking breaks as needed.

Reading: Read with your child at least 15 minutes a day. Suggested topics and texts
have been provided. Choose 1 or 2 things from the list below as you read with your child.
Before reading: Point out some of the text features including:
role of the author
role of the illustrator or photographer
letters vs. words vs. sentences
During reading: Talk about how the illustrations or photographs help you understand the
text. Ask your child to make predictions about what will happen next
After reading:
Fiction
Ask your child about the characters, setting, and major events
Ask your child to retell key details from the beginning, middle, and end of the
story (children can use the pictures to help)
Ask your child to talk about or draw their favorite part
Non-Fiction
Talk about the topic of the text
Ask your child to recall details from the text
Connect the information to real life experiences
Independent Reading: Encourage your child to decode or figure out unknown words
in text at their level using one of the following strategies:
Check the picture for help
Get your mouth ready to make the first sound
Look for a known word or word part inside of a larger word
Cover the ending
Go back and re-read
Does it look right?
Does it sound right?
Does it make sense?
Re-reading familiar text helps to increase reading fluency.
Writing: Encourage your child to write daily using the activities on the calendar. As your
child is writing remind them to:
Use a capital letter at the beginning of each sentence
Put a space in between each word
Write any sight words you know
Stretch out the sounds and write what you hear
Put punctuation at the end of your sentence
Math: Follow the activities on the calendar.

Do research on the habitat of the chosen animal. Where does it live? How does it use camouflage?
Form a plan for how you want to present your project to others. Am I going to draw it, or build it out of materials I have around the house? Gather all of the supplies you will need to create your chosen animal in its habitat.
Begin creating the chosen animal in its habitat presentation. Remember to check your notes from the last two weeks of work to see if you are correctly creating your presentation.
Finish your habitat presentation. Please share any pictures with your teacher and/or the Learning Resource Teacher. If possible, please keep them with your other portfolio work.

How high can you count?: Can you count to 100? This week you will be asked to count many objects. Use the Hundreds chart provided to help you keep track as you count. Choose items that can fit on a tabletop.
Counting coins: Can you count all the coins you have? Place each coin on the 100 chart as you count it. How many of each coin do you have? Which do you have the most of? Which do you have the least of? Record what you count on a piece of paper.
Counting books: Can you count all of the books you have? Find all of your books and count them. How many books are Fiction (books that are made-up)? How many books are Non-Fiction (books based on facts)? Which do you have more of? Record what you count on a piece of paper.
Counting wheels: Can you count all the objects that have 4 wheels in your home? How many things? List the things. How many wheels all together? Are there more things or more wheels? Record what you count on a piece of paper.
Counting blocks: Can you count all of the blocks you have? How many blocks do you have? How many types of blocks do you have? How many of each type of block do you have? Which do you have the most of? Which do you have the least of? Record what you count on a piece of paper.
Choose an object to count: Choose an object that is small enough to arrange on a tabletop. How many of that object do you have? Which do you have the most of? Which do you have the least of? Record what you count on a piece of paper.
Skip Counting: Practice counting by numbers other than one. Students will practice arranging the objects in an array (a set of objects or numbers arranged in order, often in rows and columns.) Arrays often make counting easier.

What Lives in the Ocean?
A coral reef
The ocean is full of life. What are some things that live in the ocean?
Lots of things live near the top of the ocean. For example, algae grows there. Algae are like tiny plants. They are food for many animals.
Coral reefs often live in the water near coasts. Seaweed and water plants grow there. Many kinds of fish live there too.
Other things live in the open ocean, farther from land. Some whales and dolphins live in the open ocean. They still live near the top of the water, though.
Deep in the ocean, there is less life. There is less food for animals. And the only light comes from animals that glow!

Rain forests are warm, wet places. Many trees and plants grow
there. Many animals live there.
Macaws live in rain forest trees. Macaws have bright colors. These
birds use their beaks to open the nuts they eat.
Colorful poison dart frogs live in rain forests. These frogs have a
special skin. It gives off a poisonous juice when enemies get near.
Spider monkeys live high in rain forest trees. They swing quickly
from branch to branch. Spider monkeys eat fruits and seeds.
Rain forests are full of amazing animals!
