Amador County Map
Map: goamador.com
Amador County is located approximately 100 miles east of San Francisco and 40 miles east of Sacramento in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in central California.
The majority of Amador County’s 3,700 vine acres and over 40 wineries are in Shenandoah Valley, located in the northern part of the county near the town of Plymouth. Vineyards cover rolling, oak studded hillsides ranging between 1,200 and 2,000 feet in elevation. Vineyards in the adjacent Fiddletown appellation are even higher in elevation.
Amador County vineyards experience long, warm days and cooler nights, often with a temperature differential of over thirty degrees from day to night. This allows grapes to mature slowly and develop deep, complex flavors. In recent years, winemakers throughout California have grown fond of Amador County grapes and seek out local vineyards for grape purchases.
Most Amador County vineyards are planted in volcanic Sierra Series soils, primarily sandy clay loam derived from decomposed granite. These friable, moderately dense soils effectively retain the area’s approximately 36 inches of annual rainfall, enabling some growers to dry farm their vineyards.
