CHARLEVOIX -Charlevoix Area Hospital(CAH) is the rst hospital inMichigan to acquire the lat-est in CT diagnostic tech-nology.

e new GE OptimaCT660 was installed Tues-day, October 18 at CAH,and it is currently available

for scans. is advanced CTscanner is the newest fromGE, and it offers improvedimage performance, work-

ow, and low-dose scan-ning, which will help CAHsphysicians make better diag-noses.

Charlevoix Area Hospitalis committed to providinghigh-quality services to thiscommunity and top-of-the-

line equipment to meet theneeds of area patients, saysJennifer Cunningham, LeadCT Technologist at CAH. Iam incredibly pleased withthis equipment and the ca-pabilities it offers our doc-tors and patients .

CT scans are used to diag-nose serious illness or injury

especially when the cause orsymptoms are not easily de-tectable with a conventionalphysical exam. One key fea-

ture of the Optima 660 isthat it provides exceptionaldiagnostic imaging while re-ducing radiation dosage.e dosage is up to 40%lower than the previoustechnology, with improvedimage clarity and resolution.

Low dose scanning is espe-cially benecial for womenwho may be or may becomepregnant, patients requiringrepeat CT exams, and chil-dren. CAH already followsthe Image Gently pedi-atrics dosing protocol, which monitors and reducesthe radiation dosage given

to children receiving scans.e new equipment willlower that dose even more.

    Another new feature is the

Dose Check technologythat will help technologistsmanage the amount of radi-ation given to patients.Dose Check noties andalerts CT users prior toscanning if the estimateddose is above set values. Ad-

ditionally, the technologyrequires user authoritychecks and it enables specif-ically-dened pediatric andadult alert values.

CAH believes that doctorsand patients should receivethe valuable informationprovided in their scans assoon as possible. anks topre-set protocols for traumasituations, the hospital will

be able to scan patientsmore quickly than previ-ously. In addition, they canprovide same day results forother CT services includingCT Angiography (Renal,Carotid, Mesenteric, AortaRun-offs), Advanced VesselAnalysis, Brain Perfusion, and Lung Nodule Analysis.

is technology was in-troduced a few years ago inEurope, but was only re-cently approved for use inthe U.S. We were due torenew our contract or up-grade our equipment, andthis was a perfect opportu-

nity to acquire this new sys-tem, says Joe Schodde, VicePresident of Finance atCAH. is means betterimaging capabilities andbetter safeguards for our pa-tients health.

e Optima CT660 is a64-slice scanner and is alsoamong the worlds most en-ergy efficient CT systems, using approximately 60%less energy than the previ-ous scanner. It can also offermore detailed images of pa-tients up to 500 lbs., and, ithas faster scan times and a

12-inch display screen thatshows relaxing videos orcartoons to increase patientcomfort during the exam.

    Charlevoix Area HospitalImaging Department pro-

vides the highest quality im-ages and technology to

northern Michigan in a re-laxed, friendly environment.e CT suite is spacious andcalming, with a large visualtherapy ceiling mural. edepartment goal is to pro-

vide an environment that isas stress free as possible andimaging technology that issecond to none.

Insulation keepsyour home warm in the winter andcool in the summer. ere are sev-eral common types of insulation berglass (in both batt and blown

    forms), cellulose, rigid foam board,

    and spray foam. Reective insula-

tion (or radiant barrier) is another

    insulating product which can help

    save energy in hot weather.

    When correctly installed with air

sealing, each type of insulation can

    deliver comfort and lower energy

bills during the hottest and coldest

    times of the year.

    Insulation performance is meas-

ured by R-value its ability to re-

    sist heat ow. Higher R-values

    mean more insulating power. Dif-

    ferent R-values are recommended

    for walls, attics, basements and

    crawlspaces. Insulation works best

when air is not moving through or

around it. So it is very important to

seal air leaks before installing insu-

lation to ensure that you get the

    best performance from the insula-

    tion.

To get the biggest savings, the

easiest place to add insulation is

usually in the attic. A quick way to

see if you need more insulation is to

    look across your uncovered attic

oor. If your insulation is level with

or below the attic oor joists, you

probably need to add more insula-

    tion. e recommended insulation

level for most attics is R-49 (or

    about 1518 inches, depending on

    the insulation type).
