LOVE | INTEGRITY | FAITH | EMPOWERMENT

From the Principal

Last week your Board Chair and I attended the Future Schools Conference in Sydney There were about 1000 delegates there from every education sector with presenters from Australia and overseas It was another reminder that the face of schooling is changing quickly and will change dramatically over the next ten to twenty years Here are some of the ideas we came away with

There is endemic uncertainty in society We are in an age of oxymorons We are much busier and achieve less Some people refer to this asrdquofrenzied stagnationrdquo

What kind of an organisation will thrive in such a world An open innovative and purposeful organisation A creative community with a cause and a mission

bull So what should schools be like

bull What kind of assessment should be done in this community

bull What should you learn

Changing the face of Schooling

Charles Leadbeater (Global Education Innovator) believes we need a combination of the old and the new

1 Knowing how to search test reassemble and reapply knowledge in new and unfamiliar settings

2 Questioning how to pose good questions and open students up to challenge-debate-respond This brings innovation

3 Communicating how to present show per-suade people with what you know and care about

4 Collaborating how to work with others to make the most of your combined ideas-where you learn with others as well as from others

5 Making how to create tangible products with others and to bring them into the real world

6 Persisting how to stick to it to overcome obstacles to recover from setbacks and learn the pleasure of achievement well done

He says that students need to learn to be self governing

Ian Jukes from the InfoSavvy Group gave a talk on ldquoLearning Without Classrooms Moving Schools from Here to the Futurerdquo He admits that we have no context for the changes that are occurring in education He thinks that rather than being driven by the here and now and preparing students for leaving school or for the next class or the next exam we should think in future tense preparing students for their future What will learning look like to this yearrsquos kindergarten March 12 2027

bull It will not be confined to a single place We donrsquot all have to be in same place at the same time Learning happens wherever the students happen to be

bull It will not be confined to a single time Our current Kindies might have 10-17 careers before they are 40 Therefore they will need very different skills Just-in-time learning vs just-in-case learning

bull Not confined to a single teacher It will be a part of an entire Community Both locally and around the world

PRAYER POINTS bull Praise God for an amazing conference for our stu-

dent leaders Pray for them as they seek to put into practice the things that they learnt in their personal lives and also in their leadership at Charlton

bull Praise God for the safe and healthy arrival of Abel West and Audrey Catherine Morrison Pray for mum and dad in the busy times ahead

bull Praise God for great success at the State swimming carnivals

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord His divine power has given us every-thing we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises so that through them you may participate in the divine nature having escaped the corruption in the world caused by evil desires

For this very reason make every effort to add to your faith goodness and to goodness knowledge and to knowledge self-control and to self-control perseverance and to perseverance godliness 7and to godliness mutual affection and to mutual affection love For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins

Verse for the Week 2 Peter 12-9

FROM THE CHAPLAINNot a great deal needs to be said about a passage like this Ultimately we know that when real growth and maturity hap-pens in us it takes on the shape of goodness knowledge self-control and the like What does it mean to ldquomake every effortrdquo though Itrsquos good to ask ourselves if we are building our faith Perhaps itrsquos not so much that we consciously decide not to do what we know we should (read the Bible pray go to church etc) but we get busy and the things that were once a priority seem less important Whatrsquos at stake This verse tells us wersquore at risk of forgetting that wersquove been cleansed of our sins To forget who we are seems a great tragedy May God help us to stay reminded

bull Not just a human teacher Amazingly intelligent systems are being developed not replacing the teacher but changing their role While this makes us feel uncomfortable children are born into the new digital landscape Theyrsquove internalised the digital economy

bull Not confined to paper based information Digital leaning can be more active engaging and social We need to learn how to do it better

bull Not confined to memorisation Shift away from content because content is so easy to find on all of our e-gadgets

bull Not be confined to linear learning We are paper changed they are light and sound changed

bull Not be confined to the educational elite Digital technology is the great equaliser Emergence of generational shift in what it means to be disabled He says that disabled might come to mean people who are unable to access the digital economy

bull Not be confined to Meat and Potatoes Curriculum The content of learning not in isolation from other areas (English Maths PE Science) Itrsquos about inte-gration A stew That is we are nearing the end of the age of the specialist moving towards general-ist Itrsquos not about what it is (content) but what it means (Critical Thinking and Co-construction)

How do we get there Erik Hoffer said that only true learners are able to make the most of a world that is changing radically Change will happen in spite of you

LIONS YOUTH OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

On Tuesday 9th March 2015 I attended a Youth Political Forum in which youth and youth representatives from the Lake Macquarie area could ask very important questions directly to State

Politicians For the first half of the Forum we (the youth and youth representatives) constructed elaborate questions to ask the politicians to ensure we would receive informative answers

My question was in relation to public transport ldquoTaking into consideration that public transport enables transport access to everyone regardless of financial situation and can be the difference

between having access to a job and not having access to a job why has public transport fallen as a priority to our current political leaders and why has our only direct public transport into

Newcastle been withdrawn from the peoplerdquo

When the politicians arrived the responses to my question varied greatly between the liberal greens and labor representatives However all answers were informative and a number of

solutions were expressed such as adding more funds to public transportation and renewing a light rail train line

The evening was an exceptional experience and I hope to attend more such functions in the future Many other questions were asked that pertained to HSC TAFE and care for the

disadvantaged in schools as well as career opportunities for young people

PA NEWS AND UPDATES

WHICH TYPE OF PARENT ARE YOUThere are three types of parents

There are those who walk in front of their kids there are those who walk behind

their kids and those who walk beside their children

Once you have worked that out there is an even better question to ask than

ldquoWhat style do you default tordquo That is ldquoWhat style does my child need right

nowrdquo Ask that question often enough and respond appropriately and yoursquoll find

your effectiveness as a mum or a dad will increase astronomically as yoursquoll be

meeting the needs of your child READ MORE

TROLLSTrolls are part of ancient Nordic culture They inhabit the world of folk and fairy tales Trolls

lived under bridges and in dark places Short hairy and ugly trolls were rarely seen however

just the thought of them was enough to send shivers down the spine As a kid you had to

be wary of trolls

Now the worst trolls live inside childrens heads The voice of insecurity self doubt and fear

is the worst troll of all This is the troll that kids have to be most vigilant about

Its the job of parents to help kids defeat trolls Kids need to face them to defeat them

WHICH TYPE OF PARENT ARE YOUThere are three types of parents

There are those who walk in front of their kids there are those who walk behind

their kids and those who walk beside their children

Once you have worked that out there is an even better question to ask than

ldquoWhat style do you default tordquo That is ldquoWhat style does my child need right

nowrdquo Ask that question often enough and respond appropriately and yoursquoll find

your effectiveness as a mum or a dad will increase astronomically as yoursquoll be

I read the children ldquoThe Book With No Picturesrdquo by BJ Novak and after all the overwhelming laughter and applause subsided it was time for exploring and finding those special books to borrow Many found it hard to limit their choices to only five Adults also borrowed from the parent section too

Everyone left with smiles books and a library bag as a bonus gift It was a great day and many couldnrsquot wait to get home to tell their older siblings that they have library access too now
