From the PrincipalMatthew 11:28 “Come to me, all of you who are tired and have heavy loads, and I will give you rest. 29 Accept my teachings and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit, and you will find rest for your lives. New Century Version (NCV)

Is Your Child Getting Enough Sleep?

At least once a year I like to remind you about the importance of sleep. It is vital for our well being and for your child’s education

HOW MUCH SLEEP DO WE NEED?

• Babies under one: 14-18 hours throughout the day and night

• Toddlers: 12-14 hours per 24 hour period

• Primary school: 10-12 hours per day

• High school: 9-11 hours per day

• Adults: 7-9 hours per day

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE DON’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP?

Many things can be affected when we do not sleep enough such as:

• Behaviour - aggressive. antisocial, withdrawn, hyperactive, unable to control or regulate behaviour

• Emotions - Moody, depressed, anxious, stressed, uneasy, unconfident, irritable

• Planning - poorly organised, poor time man-agers, failing tests, forgets lessons

• Concentration - inattentive, lack of concentra-tion, falling behind in school

• Creativity - not working at full potential

• Problem solving - poor behaviour control and difficulty in social situations

• Complicated thinking - struggles with maths, sciences, languages, abstract concepts

• Motor coordination - less sporty, more accidents, clumsier

• Weight - being obese and overweight is more likely with less sleep

• Health - poorer immune system - sicker more often

• Learning - it is thought that sleep, particularly dream sleep or REM sleep, is necessary for storing certain types of memory, particularly more difficult memories such as mathematical concepts and language.

Sleep Problems in Adolescents:

Adolescents can have delayed sleep phases. That is - they get tired later than they did before. Their bodies are not ready to sleep when the clock says it is time. This is due to both hormonal changes and social pressures.

Environmental factors:

Teenagers have a lot more going on in their lives (phone, social media, TV, jobs, social activities, school, sports, more homework and worry). These all compete for sleep which is low on the priority list and is often given up for these other things.

Circadian (sleep/wake) rhythm factors:

During adolescence there is a delay in the time when melatonin (one of our sleep hormones which makes us sleepy) is released from our brains to our bodies. Because adolescents are not tired until later in the evening their bodies are not ready to fall asleep until later - so they do things to stop being bored (TV, phone,

PRAYER POINTS • Praise God for the Empowering Conferences last

week, which really encouraged and strengthened the faith of many students.

• Pray for the final preparation for Inspection and for Open Day, both on Friday next week.

• Continue to pray for quite a number of staff who have been quite unwell, and for ongoing good health for our staff and students as we come into the cooler weather period.

DO YOU HAVE A PRAYER REQUEST?Would you like someone to pray for you, your family or a friend?

Would you like someone to stand with you in faith to believe for a breakthrough?

Email our chaplain, Matt Stackhouse: [email protected] or phone (02) 4959 9111.

LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbour no wrong and casts no slur on his fellowman, who despises a vile man but honours those who fear the LORD, who keeps his oath even when it hurts, who lends his money without usury and does not accept a bribe against the innocent. He who does these things will never be shaken.

Verse for the Week: Psalm 15

FROM THE CHAPLAINWho of us can say that this Psalm describes our lives? Certainly not me! How do you feel when you read this? Encouraged, guilty, challenged, disappointed? Something happens in us all when we are confronted with the truth; it tends to bring out what it needs to in each of us. While I know that my life is far from perfect, I also know that because Jesus paid the price that I deserved for not living like this, I am free to pursue a life of integrity knowing that I have his help and love to guide me. He is in the business of transforming people to want to live righteously; he’s a bit of a specialist at it. However you may feel about this, may it reveal the need for God in us all.

social media… which in turn makes it harder to get to sleep). They then find it hard to get up in the morning because they fell asleep later and have not had enough sleep.

As a result, adolescents are usually very sleepy during the week as they miss out on a couple of hours sleep per night. By the end of the week they may have a ‘sleep debt’ of 10 hours. They may sleep in on the weekend to catch up that ‘debt’. Adolescents are sleep deprived - How can they learn like that?

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

• Don’t let the weekend or holiday bedtime get TOO late. This will push the body clock further forward and make it harder to get to sleep earlier when school or work starts again.

• Be aware of the signs of fatigue in young people during the day (withdrawal, anxiety, depression, aggression, poor learning and attention).

• Be realistic with bedtimes.

• Napping 20 minutes at about 4 PM is better than sleeping in TOO much on weekends to pay back sleep debt

• Promote good sleep hygiene. See page 14 for ‘What is Sleep Hygiene?’

Football Gala DayMONDAY 4TH MAY - TAMWORTH

THACCCSA

On Monday 4th May, four teams from Charlton travelled to Tamworth, NSW to compete in a State Football competition for Christian Schools in our region. We began our

eventful trip on Sunday 3rd May with an overnight stay at Carinya Christian College, Tamworth. The following morning we had an early 6:30am wake up, followed by a 6:45am

breakfast and by the time we reached 7:00am we all had our kits on and were ready for an exciting day.

Later that morning we arrived at Gipps Street field where the Senior Boys, Senior Girls and Junior Boys teams were playing. Unfortunately the Junior Girls would be playing

20 minutes away at the Marius Street fields on the other side of the town. Once we arrived at the field the nerves and excitement finally set in. We were prepared for tough

competition. Finally, the first game began and we lost to Belmont with an end total score 1-3. As the games continued the victories and defeats began rolling in. Throughout the

day we played against teams including Carinya, Belmont, Taree and Wyong. We won some and we lost some.

We would like to thank Carinya Christian School for the overnight stay, Michael Dawson for volunteering to be our bus driver, his son, Brodie Dawson who was our Junior Coach

for the day and last but not least all of our teachers for being able to make this event possible (Ian Mathias, Julie Oldham, Michelle Thornton and Nathan Welburn).

Lilly-Jane Babic and Kahlia Jeffery (Junior Girls Team)

Page 5: Charlton News, Issue 7

The morning started off cold and cloudy, but turned to sunshine as the day moved on. The Senior Girls’ soccer team was filled with happy encouraging girls who were keen to play some

good football. As a team that had never played soccer together we played very well throughout the whole day. We started the day with a 4-0 win, followed by a 3-0 win versing some very

good teams. We then went down 2-0 to Belmont and 2-1 to Carinya but finished the day on a high, winning 1-0 over Hunter. Overall we finished 3rd and everyone played some very good

games of soccer.

Dana Gill (Senior Girls Team)

After the long, tiring bus trip with all the screaming kids up to Tamworth, we finally arrived to uncomfortably sleep on the classroom floor at Carinya Christian College.

The Gala Day itself started with a 1-1 draw for the Senior Boys, thanks to a Bushiri bicycle and an unlucky Josh Low howler. While we were waiting for our next match, we watched Hunter

snatch a 1-0 win over Carinya, which put Hunter in the lead on 6pts and Carinya and Charlton both on 4pts. We played Hunter in our last group match, which we were all excited for.

Bushiri got us off to a great start, finishing a one-on-one with the goalkeeper and then scoring a bomb from a tight angle. We were up 2-0 and with 5 minutes to go, we were put on edge

when Hunter scored. We managed to hang on to a 2-1 win and move through to the semi-finals at the top of our group.

Our semi-final opponents were Wyong who were our toughest yet. They ended up scoring first to take a 1-0 lead while Bushiri was on the bench getting strapped. When he came on, we

went into full attacking mode. This left us vulnerable at the back and unluckily let us concede another 2 goals on the counter where we slumped to a 3-0 defeat.

To top off a great day we played a muck around 3rd/4th play off against Carinya, which we won in a lets say, non competitive game in which we played with 8 strikers. In good spirit, over-

all happy at how we played, we began the 3 and half hour journey home on the buses all worn out from the big day.

EARLY START TO UniversityThree of our gifted Year 10 students are completing a first year University of Newcastle course through Merewether High School.

Sean Gill, Courtney O’Brien and Samantha Whitling are completing university lectures each Friday from 2pm to 6pm. Sean is completing Introduction to Engineering Practice while Courtney and Samantha are completing Foundations of Health and Disease. The trio will complete the same thirteen weeks of lectures, assignments and final exam that the first year students are currently doing at Newcastle University.

We wish them all the best as they make this fantastic start to their university careers.

ATHLETICSCARNIVAL

A Record Breaking Day...The Primary Athletics Carnival at Glendale was a record breaking day with all new students from Year 3 joining the fun. There was a high level of student participation and the Carnival was well attended by family members.

Some of the records broken had been held for over 10 years. Grace Baker, Avalon Woodward, Abbey Stafford, Zac Smith, Fraser Offen and Thomas Hellyer were some of our record breaking champions.

The staff and helpers worked well as a team to make the day a great success. This year we had our first ever Trivia at the Carnival to encourage family involvement.

Congratulations to COURT HOUSE who were the overall winners on the day with 1052 points. Everyone had a great day! Thanks to Mr Lalor for another great sporting event.

What is SleepHygiene?

“Sleep hygiene” can be defined as habits that can help us to sleep or stop us from sleeping. If you or someone you know is having trouble sleeping you can try to change or include some of the things on this list and see if it helps.

• No TV/computer games/social media one hour before bed. No TVs/computers in bedrooms

• Monitor mobile phone use in bed

• No coke/caffeine, high sugar or high spicy food 3-4 hours before bed

• Ensure relaxing and regular bed time routine - special time with children, relaxation techniques such as breathing

• Finish eating 2-3 hours before bed - digestion competes with sleeping - hot milk is OK

• Make sure the bedroom is comfortable (temperature, light, noise)

• Set bedtimes and wake times - try and keep these regular

• Learn to relax - deal with worry and stress

• Use a sleep diary to check how many hours they are sleeping

• Convince children that it is important to sleep well. Reward them for complying with bedtime rules.

What is SleepHygiene?

Year 12 Retreat Last Thursday Year 12 students attended an overnight retreat at Glenrock. The retreat began with indoor go-karts where students challenged their teachers for the fastest lap. Honourable mentions go to Kristina

Kurtovic and Rhys Kelp, but their efforts were not enough to knock Mr Wilton and Mr Jenkins off the podium. The ‘Most Memorable Collision’ honour goes to Kyall Allan and Sam Booth. Another highlight was the night game which involved finding buried clues, collecting balloons from mad Scientists and completing a team

obstacle course, all at speed .

The retreat centred around 3R’s – Reflect, Refocus and Responsibility. Students were given time to spend reflecting on their schooling as a group and as individual’s. Much laughter resulted and also a sense of

satisfaction as they realised how far they have progressed as a group. Thursday night drew attention to their need to refocus their lives; academically, spiritually and emotionally.

Friday morning saw a challenge to step up and take responsibility for their remaining time at school and their transition into the adult world post-

school. As a staff we appreciated the positive, engaging attitude in which all Year 12 displayed at camp and look forward to a successful final two terms

for the Year12 cohort of 2015.

Empowering 2015The speakers were excellent! Some of the best Youth speakers in Australia presented encouraging and inspiring

messages. The aim of the conference is to empower students in their faith and to help them grow spiritually. The Hillsong College Band provided the music for Worship and the students were engaged and actively participated in

worshipping Jesus.

Our Charlton students really enjoyed “The Empowering” and many young people made Christian commitments and responses at the conference.

Mrs Kim Farnham, Empowering Coordinator

Last week students from Christian schools around the region gathered together for a Christian Conference called “The Empowering”. It was held at St Phillip’s Christian College in their theatre. We took 110 Middle School students on Tuesday to

the Youth Summit and 60 students from Senior School on Wednesday and Thursday to the Senior Leadership Summit.

Page 14: Charlton News, Issue 7

K-2 Athletics Carnival

Kindy to Year 2 had their Athletics Carnival on Wednesday. Charlton’s Pl@yschool was also involved. The sunny day saw children running hard, trying their best and most of all having a lot of fun.

There were novelty races of bean bag balancing, egg and spoon race and rubber chicken Javelin. Rotation activities of stuck in the mud, sack race, over under, and using the parachute followed.

The younger sibling race and parents race is always a highlight for the kids. It was so great to see so many mums, dad, grandparents and friends join in the festivities. Thank you to everyone involved for making it such a great day!

On 18th April 2015, Year 11 student Liam Hector was presented with his Royal Certificate for his Queen’s Scout Award by His Excellency General David Hurley, Governor of NSW at a ceremony at Government House. The Royal Certificate is personally authorised by her

Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. On Saturday 9th May, Liam had his local Queen’s Scout Award presentation at Glenrock Scout Camp. The local presentation was attended by Jodie Harrison, Mayor of Lake Macquarie, Regional Commissioner Hunter and coastal Region Steve

Fernie, Regional Commissioner Venturer Scouts Barry Kilby, Regional Commissioner Scouts Bruce Leverton and other invited guests.

The day went well and the Mayor was quite impressed with Liam’s organisational and planning skills, his commitment to scouting and community and the amount of work he completed to become one of the youngest Venturers to be awarded the Queen’s Scout Award. The

Regional Commissioner mentioned that the last Venturer to be awarded his Queen’s Scout Award at the age of 16 was in 1973.

Jodie Harrison commented, “for a young man of Liam’s age to demonstrate such commitment and maturity, he must have been supported at all levels including scouting, family and school.”

Liam used part of his Duke of Ed work to satisfy some of the requirements for his Queen’s Scout Award. Liam and his family would like to thank Mark Wilton for his support while Liam was working toward his Queen’s Scout Award and his ongoing work toward achieving his Duke of Ed Gold Award.

Liam is with 1st Teralba Sea Scouts and even though he has completed his Queen’s Scout Award, he is still active in running his Venturer Unit in the role of Unit Chairman. The role of Chairman includes organising scouting activities, assisting others working toward their Queen’s Scout Award, and

administration of the unit. He has recently taken up the challenge of managing the 1st Teralba Sea Scouts watercraft. This job has just increased dramatically with the addition of a yacht added to the fleet. This will enable older scouts and Venturers to undertake extended expeditions with limited or

no direct supervision to enable them to further develop their planning, organisational and interpersonal skills.

Liam is also continuing to assist others in scouting and the community. Liam’s work with the community includes his work assisting the Salvation Army with providing meals to homeless and underprivileged during the school holidays.

Congratulations Liam!

Queen’s Scout Award Recipient
