G ood evening and thank you for purchasing a programme from us

for tonight’s game back in the NWCFL against Bootle FC. I would like to welcome everyone to Mossie Park, including our friends from the Berry Street Garage stadium and hope you have a safe journey home afterwards.

Our previous match at Lancaster City didn’t go as we wanted it to. A 5-1 scoreline reflected their higher position two leagues above, but didn’t reflect how it went on the pitch. We were very even at times but their quality of finishing alluded to the final result and their progression. That result means we’re out of all the cups now, so the old footballing cliché “we can concentrate on the league” has never been more apt.

Tonight’s game will be just as tough as last week. Bootle comfortably did the double over us last season, and have just appointed a new chairman in Dave Miley. I wish him the best in his new role at the club. His team are currently in 4th place in the division, and looking to claim one of the top three spots come the end of the season.

Us Charnock Richard fans know what we can do, and if we show the same guile as we did against Whitchurch 11 days ago, we can certainly put the cat amongst the pigeons and turn the form guide over again.

Enjoy the game.Ian Livesey, Programme Co-ordinator

T onight I’m hoping to build on our last league game Vs Whitchurch. I feel that was our

best performance to date.

The lads were outstanding and it was a very dominant performance. It clearly showed we can compete against ‘big spenders’ in our league.

We have to try and match that level of intensity and domination on a regular basis.

Having said that our league form has been very good of late and I want to continue that with a result tonight.

I have a depleted squad for tonight’s game with Nathan Fairhurst and Danny Regan

carrying injuries. Jack Bennett suspended. On the plus side Oliver Turner has come into the squad having been injured for 3/4 weeks. I’ve also two of the future prospects in the squad tonight, Owen Green and Owen Morris.

Let’s get behind the lads and be positive.

G ood evening and welcome to Mossie Park for tonight’s NWCFL Premier Division fixture. I would firstly like

to welcome the players, club officials and supporters of tonight’s opponents Bootle FC. We hope that you all have an enjoyable stay at our club and have a safe journey back home to Merseyside after the match.

Since I wrote my last article one week ago we have played two matches against higher league opposition (in the LFA Challenge Cup and a mid-season friendly) and what a contrast those two matches were compared to when we recently out-played Whitchurch Alport in our last league game. It is fair to say that in both matches we were totally outclassed and never really got out of first gear which is somewhat disappointing, considering that we have always been able to give a good account of ourselves in the past against higher league opposition.

Inconsistency is the one word that describes our form so far this season and there is no doubt at times that it must be frustrating for our supporters to watch but we all need to get behind the manager and players when things are not going to plan on the pitch. I know that Ryan and the lads will be keen to get back to winning ways as quickly as possible so let’s hope for a good performance tonight against very tough opposition. Bootle made slow start to the season without a win in their first four competitive matches but they have since been on an excellent run of form which has moved them up into the top three in the league. They had a surprising blip on Saturday when they lost 2-0 to Litherland REMYCA in the Macron Cup, so we should expect a big reaction from them coming into tonight’s game.

On Saturday our Reserve team home fixture against Garstang Reserves was moved across to the Mossie Close clubhouse pitch to allow our first team to play their friendly on Mossie Park. We are rather fortunate that the West

Lancashire League have approved the Mossie Close pitch as a suitable venue to be able to host West Lancashire League matches, particularly when there may be issues with using our main pitch. Thankfully the Reserves ran out 3-1 winners and hopefully that result will give them a big boost going forward, following a recent dearth of games during October due to poor weather. Next Saturday the Reserves are at home to Kendal United with a 2pm kick off, so if you aren’t able to travel to Congleton to support the first team, then I’m sure they would appreciate everyone’s support during their game at Mossie Park.

We had another working party down at the ground during a very pleasant day on Sunday to assemble the second of the new pair of dugouts. Unfortunately I had to leave the ground slightly earlier than planned due to another minor head injury (Don’t ask!). Hopefully the second dugout will be fully installed ready for tonight’s game but I would like to thank Dave Smith, Alan Baron and Brian Lowe (plus one or two others) for all their recent efforts to build and install the new dugouts.

Tickets are still available for our next fundraising event which will be held on Saturday 30th November in the clubhouse with entertainment provided by two singers from a duet called ‘CJ’. Tickets for this event cost £10 each which includes a hot supper and can be obtained from Alan Baron. We are still looking for raffle prizes for this event, so if you can help out with a raffle prize then please contact Alan.

That’s about all from me but please enjoy tonight’s match and as always, get behind the lads and give them your very best support.

06 THE OFFICIAL CHARNOCK RICHARD FOOTBALL CLUB PROGRAMME

FROM THE CHAIRMAN SHAUN TOOTELL

THE BOARDROOM SHAUN TOOTELL

Good afternoon and welcome to Mossie Park for thisthird home league game of the season for CharnockRichard FC in the Hallmark Security League. On behalfof everyone here at Charnock Richard, I would like towelcome the management, players and committeefrom St Helens Town. We hope you all have a veryenjoyable day at our club and have a safe journeyback home.

Our first ever home league game two weeks ago againstAlsager Town was a bit of a wake-up call for us all andshowed everyone that we can expect to face some verydifficult opponents in this league. It is however veryencouraging that as I write this article, the team has sincebounced back with two excellent away wins at Silsden andWhitchurch Alport. We were advised by the league thatone of the management committee would be present at ourfirst home game to offer advice and support on the day andit was the league Ground Grading Chairman GeoffWilkinson who visited us on the day. Geoff is very wellknown to us all here at Charnock and has been offering theclub valuable advice on ground grading matters over anumber of years. It is fair to say that Geoff’s advice hashelped to save the club a lot of money which could havebeen spent unwisely as we developed the Mossie Parkfacility.

On the day, Geoff took the opportunity to update us on ourcurrent Ground Grading status. For those who are notfamiliar with the grading standards, grounds must initiallymeet the FA Grading Standard H to gain promotion into theNorth West Counties League. Following admission into theleague, all clubs must then meet Grading Standard G bythe 31st March in the following year (in our case 31stMarch 2017). The difference between Grade G and H isvery minimal - Grade H requires a minimum coveredspectator accommodation of 50, whereas Grade Grequires a minimum covered spectator accommodation of100 (of which 50 must be seated and located in onestand). Both Grading Standards state ‘All seating mustafford a good view of the pitch’ and whilst our currentseated stand holds just over 100 seats, only the higher 50seats meet this criteria due to the potential for standingspectators along the touchlines blocking the views from thelower seats. It is fair to say that we have visited othergrounds recently and the same argument could be raisedas to whether some ground level seating at other venuesafford a good view of the pitch but we will leave that forothers to debate.

At the end of the day we have a responsibility to complywith the Ground Grading Regulations, so we have apredicament which must be resolved within the next sixmonths. One option would be to raise the height of thecurrent stand to ensure all that all 100 plus seats afford agood view of the pitch - not an easy option but notimpossible. A second option would be to build a coveredstanding area to accommodate 50 or 100 spectators sothat we can meet the Grade G requirements. Theseissues will be discussed at the next committee meetingwhich will be held in a few days’ time and hopefully wewill agree our preferred strategy going forward. Oneissue we mustn’t forget is that should we be the fortunateposition to challenge for promotion to the PremierDivision next season, then the ground must the meet therequirements of Grade F which will almost certainlyrequire us to raise the height of the stand to allow all 100plus seats to give a good view of the pitch.

On a final note I would like to thank many of you whoattended our recent Reserve league game at home toWorkington Reserves. Not only did we get an excellentattendance on a Monday evening but it is fair to say thatit was a superb game of football played by two excellentyoung sides who were both a credit to the game. I lostcount of how many spectators came up to me after thematch to say that they had thoroughly enjoyed the game.

That’s enough from me for the time being, so pleaseenjoy your day and hopefully we can look forward toseeing you again at Mossie Park as the seasonprogresses.

G ood evening and welcome to Mossie Park for this North West Counties League Premier Division game against

our friends from Merseyside, Bootle. We would like to take this opportunity to extend a warm Charnock Richard welcome to the players, club officials and supporters of the ‘Bucks’ and hope that you will enjoy your stay with us and have a safe and trouble-free journey home after the match. We would also like to give a warm welcome to tonight’s match officials in the shape of referee, Abid Hussain and his two able assistants, Matthew Clarke & Ryan Aldred. Matthew makes a quick return to Mossie Park, having officiated as an assistant when we met Lancaster City in the 2nd Round of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy only seven days ago. I think he may have applied for a season ticket!!!!!!!

Bootle came within a whisker of taking the North West Counties League Premier Division championship last term. At various points of the season the title seemed to be a formality with City of Liverpool way ahead of the pack, but with local rivals and their landlords, Bootle, going on an unprecedented 20 game winning run in the league, culminating in a 1-0 victory over ‘The Purps’ on Easter Monday in front of a record crowd of 1344, City of Liverpool were pushed into second place in the table with just one game to play; having been in first place since 27 September 2018. However, a 2-0 away victory for City at Irlam on the last day of the season, and Bootle dropping 2 points when drawing 1-1 at home with Northwich Victoria, saw the lead change hands again and ‘The Purps’ crowned champions. In the end it was to be a dramatic and traumatic end to what was an otherwise, very exciting and productive season for Bootle.

It was understandable therefore, when ‘The Bucks’ made a quiet start to their 2019-20 campaign following the heartbreak of missing out on promotion to the Northern Premier League after going oh so close last term. Indeed, Bootle lost 2 and drew 2 of their opening four outings in league and cup, before a 3-2 Premier Division success at Ashton Athletic on 20th August, was to be the catalyst to a very impressive run in the league. In fact, the next eight games were won, elevating ‘The Bucks’ to the top of the Premier Division by the end of October.

Needless to say, Charnock have quite a task on their hands tonight, if we are to put an end to Bootle’s recent good run of results. We have met

‘The Bucks’ on five previous occasions in league and cup; all within the last two seasons, with each team having won two plus a draw. We have witnessed first-hand just how Bootle like play such attractive and attacking football and games against them are invariably entertaining.

On Saturday ‘The Bucks’ surprisingly fell to a 0-2 defeat in the 2nd Round of the Macron League Cup at bottom side Litherland Remyca. It just goes to show just how unpredictable football really is. We have had our own experiences of upset in the cup competitions this season. It is unfathomable, but if the game was predictable, then it wouldn’t hold the same fascination for us all, as it invariably does.

The loss against Lancaster City in the 2nd Round of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy seven days ago was a disappointment and meant that cup football is over for us this season. Looking back, we have been involved in nine cup ties this term, covering four competitions. So, despite the disappointment of our exit from all the cup competitions for the reminder of the season, we have not done all that badly. On a positive note, Charnock won in the FA Cup for the very first time and in fact enjoyed four games in the competition with the win at Longridge Town in the Preliminary Round replay on a memorable night at the end of August, being the standout tie of the season for us. We also picked up a little welcome cash from the two national competitions.

This coming Saturday the 16th November we have another tough assignment with a trip down to deepest Cheshire when we take on Congleton Town in the Premier Division at their well-appointed Booth Street ground. We will be looking to avenge the 1-3 home reverse that we suffered on the 15th October. Our reserves are at home to Kendal United in Division 2 of the West Lancashire League. If you are unable to make the trip to Cheshire on Saturday, then why not come down to Mossie Park and support the ‘second string’?

It was good to see our reserves get back on track at the weekend when goals scored by Scott Handy, Nathan Lindley and Lama Meite saw us overcome Garstang Reserve at Mossie Close by 3-1 in Division 2 of the West Lancashire League. Well done one and all.

Please enjoy your football this evening and remember to get behind ‘The Villagers’ in what will prove to be quite a tough game for us. Thanks also for purchasing the programme tonight. We hope that you will enjoy the read and find our Bootle issue one that will be a valuable keepsake of the event.

SECRETARY'S REPORT DAVE ROWLAND

SECRETARY’S REPORT DAVE ROWLAND

Welcome to Mossie Park for this afternoon’s DivisionOne game against Sandbach United who are visitingus for the very first time and a warm Charnock welcome to all who have travelled up from deepestCheshire to be with us today. We hope that you willenjoy your stay and have a safe and trouble-free journey home after the game. The East Cheshire sideare a friendly and welcoming club as we found outwhen visiting them on that ill-fated fog-bound afternoon at the end of November. It is hoped that wecan return their excellent hospitality today.

I first met United’s secretary, John Clayton, and a coupleof their committee, at the Imperial Hotel on the NorthPromenade in Blackpool when attending the North WestCounties League AGM back on the 11th June. Applicantclubs were asked to remain outside of the meeting untilbeing summoned by League Chairman Paul Lawler whenthe representatives from each of the six applicants werecalled upon to give an introductory speech to the assembled throng before being voted in by the memberclubs. As we waited nervously in an adjacent room, SteveMawdesley and I got into conversation with the Sandbachcontingent and quickly found them to be a very sociablegroup. We got on with them immediately and it was andenjoyable exchange. That day we made our first friends inthe North West Counties League and long may it continue.

Sandbach United are one of the six newcomers to theNorth West Counties League this season and spent theprevious campaign at Step 7 in the Cheshire Leaguewhere they finished in 4th spot in the Premier Division.Like most of the newly promoted clubs they have made agood impression in their first season in the competitionand we wish them well. Today is of course our last homegame of the season not withstanding any play-off gamethat we may be involved in. To say that it has been a special one would be an understatement. We have enjoyed some wonderful football, been to many differentvenues for the first time, met some really great people andmade many new friends. When we left our comfort zone inthe West Lancashire League, we did so because the clubhad grown and developed to a point where new challenges and new horizons had become a necessity.

A new direction was needed if the club was to grow. Remaining stagnant was not an option. We have hadproblems to contend with. Finding funding for essentialground development and finding an appropriate level forour reserve side was only a couple of examples. The immediate aim was to consolidate at Step 6 level in theNational League System and to be in a position to sustain this in the long term. The players of our threesenior teams have had a fine season and once again thishas been due to the management skills and dedication ofthe management teams of all three. On the administration side, we have been joined by David Smithand Brian Lowe who have very kindly agreed to give oftheir precious time and for this we are very grateful.

For me, this is my fifth season as secretary and I canhonestly say, hand on heart, that the 2016-17 campaignis one of the best that I have enjoyed in football. At timesit has been hard graft and there are many individualswho have put in a good deal of that this term, literally. It isthe combined efforts of you all that make this, such aspecial football club and such a wonderful place to be.Of course, we do not know just how things will pan out asafter today. Indeed, we have three very difficult awaygames to negotiate. Whether we are in the play-offs ornot is anybody’s guess but it is a sign of the success thatwe have enjoyed, when we are still talking about wherewe will finish amongst the top group at this stage of affairs. Whatever occurs, well done one and all.

Dave Rowland | Club Secretary

The original Bootle F.C. was formed in 1880 and played adjacent to Bootle Cricket Club,

on Hawthorne Road. The club was Everton FC’s main rivals and competed with Everton for the prestigious place in the newly formed Football League. Because only one club per area was permitted to join, Bootle narrowly lost out, despite the fact that in the run up to the decision Everton was banned from both the FA Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup the previous year.

However, Bootle lost out and in 1889–90 Bootle became founder members of the Football Alliance, which became the newly formed Football League second division. That season was the most successful as the club finished league runners-up and reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, losing to Blackburn Rovers.

When the Alliance merged with the Football League in 1892, Bootle became founder members of the new Second Division. However, despite finishing in a respectable 8th place, the club dropped out after one season due to ongoing financial problems.

Ironically a new local club, Liverpool, took Bootle’s place in the second division. The possible resurrection of a Bootle team became a distinct probability in August 1947 when local councillors identified the popularity and talent on show in the ‘Bootle JOC’ league and knew the town was big enough to be put back on the football map with its own team again. For years now it had been an exporter of its many players to

other clubs, both professional and semi-professional.

The promise of sponsorship money from local businesses brought great optimism and the issue of one-shilling shares further boosted club finances. After local residents were assured that the ground at Bootle Stadium (Maguire Avenue) would not be used solely as a football ground, an application to join the Lancashire Combination for the 1948/49 season was made and accepted. Club colours even posed a problem, red or blue were dismissed for fear of showing favour to either of the ‘big two’ so it was agreed that, as the original Bootle FC wore white shorts, this colour would be adopted. Players mostly came from the local league and surrounding clubs, however one player that Bootle overlooked was a tall, blonde, ex-prisoner- of-war German, Bert Trautman.

Trautman, then living in Huyton, trained with Bootle at the stadium for several weeks but, with the area taking such a heavy pounding during the war, it was decided not to tempt any local bitterness and he was allowed to join St Helens Town and of course moved on to FA Cup and Manchester City folklore. They kicked off their new campaign in 1948 against Barnoldswick and district. The league was won at the first attempt.

However, Bootle struggled in the top-flight and after several tough seasons and also a change in Council priorities they withdrew from the league and folded during the 1953–54 campaign. In 1953, the current club was formed as Langton with Frank Doran Senior being one of the founding members.

The club played in the various local Bootle leagues. After a very successful spell in the Liverpool County Combination – winning the leagues and cups on various occasions the club requested to change its name to the latest incarnation of Bootle FC.

This was accepted in 1973 and a year later ‘the Bucks’ joined the Lancashire Combination. After winning the Combination in both 1976 and 1977, Bootle then joined the Second Division of the Cheshire County League, which was won in the first season, and was promoted to the First Division.

In 1982 the Cheshire County League was one of the leagues that merged to form the North-West Counties League, which Bootle duly joined, becoming a member of the First Division (Which is now called the Premier Division). The club spent most of their time in the First Division until 2000 when the club was relegated to the Second Division.

However, despite finishing 6th in 2002, the club dropped into the Liverpool County Combination as Bucks Park on Copy Lane closed its doors for the final time. In 2006 the club, with a new ground on Vesty Road, Bootle were elected back into Division 2 of the North-West Counties League.

In 2009 Bootle won promotion to the NWCFL Premier Division winning the league Championship in the process. In 2009/10, the first season back in the NWCFL Premier Division Bootle finished a more than respectable 3rd. In 2010/11 finished 6th place. They equalled the 3rd place again in 2012.

The 2016/17 season was Bootle’s best in the North-West Counties. Joe Doran’s side finished second agonisingly missing out on the title to eventual winners Atherton Collieries. The Bucks collected their highest ever points total, finishing with 92 points for the season. Doran’s side also reached the semi-finals of the Macron Challenge Cup and the Liverpool Senior Cup.

The 2016/17 season was also a memorable one for striker Ryan Cox, who wrote his name into the club’s history books. The hotshot forward netted 44 times in the campaign breaking Stevie O’Neill’s record of 42 for the most goals scored by a Bootle player in a season.

Since 1953 Frank Doran Senior has been the mainstay of this era for Bootle FC. Being a player, manager, secretary, groundsman, and now president of the club. And these foundations have been built on with a family and community spirit felt at the club.

With the help of local businesses and the volunteers at the club, Bootle has developed into an important community hub where young and old are welcomed and interact. This is highlighted in the using of the ground – whether it is used for the bar, the 3G pitches on offer, the local tournaments and league cup finals that are played here, or the classroom hire. Bootle FC is in the heart of the community and everyone is welcome.

A horror opening five minutes set the stall out for the Greens in the Partners Foundation Lancashire

Challenge Trophy 2nd round match at home to BetVictor NPL Premier Division side Lancaster City.

The scoreline reflected the gap in the standings between the two teams, but only the quality of the finishing was evident as for many periods Charnock matched their higher placed counterparts.

Manager Ryan Donnellan made five changes to his starting line up. Those who were on the bench from Saturday's 4-0 win over Whitchurch Alport all started, along with the addition of Owen Green who has featured for the Reserve side so far this season.

It took just 40 seconds for the opening goal to come. A left wing cross from Jack Armer was nodded into the bottom left corner by Brad CARSLEY. Just over 3 minutes later, Matt Davison gave a free kick away on the edge of the area, and although the set-piece was initially blocked by the wall, it was squared to Rob WILSON who drilled a shot home into the bottom left hand corner from 25 yards giving Jake Eastwood no chance. Charnock were shocked into action and after 11 minutes on the clock pulled a goal back. A good move involving Woods, he slid in the low pass to Oliver OXLEY who finished well low past a static Sam Ashton. Davison was again penalised for a shirt-pull on his opponent to give a free kick away, this time it was sent through to Eastwood. Down the other end Carl Grimshaw nodded down

a Davison cross, but it was just out of reach for Bennett to get on the end of. Despite being a goal behind, Charnock started to pressurize the Dolly Blues defence. But a diagonal ball forward saw Jack Armer get past Davison on the wing, and his low centre was slid home by Kieron FEENEY to restore the visitors two-goal advantage. On the half hour City could've gone further ahead, a free kick on the left touchline by Wilson bobbled through to Matthew Williams, but he mis-fired from 8 yards. Lancaster 'keeper Sam Ashton had to be alert to parry a James Walker effort. The corner was cleared was cleared up and played back to Grimshaw, but his trickery didn't pay off and the ball ended out for a goal-kick. Armer found himself in the referee's notebook for fouling Davison. Walker hitting the free kick into the legs of the wall and out for a corner. Grimshaw was next to receive a caution for a late challenge on Paul Dawson.

With no changes to either side at half time, it started in the vein as the first. A Lancaster corner was met by Paul DAWSON in the penalty area who coolly side-footed the ball past Eastwood from close range. That goal was the killer blow for Charnock who never recovered. For want of trying though, they continued to press the Lancaster backline at every opportunity. Woods found Grimshaw down the middle of the pitch with an accurate pass, and after getting the ball under control, fired straight at Ashton who collected the ball. A mere 30 seconds later Charnock found themselves down to ten men. Bennett kicked out at the heels of a City midfielder and subsequently received his marching orders from the referee. Lancaster captain Simon Wills received a caution in the

ensuing meleé. Davison was replaced by Jordan Darr on 56 minutes, and a minute later a contested dropped ball was won by Sam Bailey, but Carsley headed down into Eastwood's hands. It wasn't long before the Lancaster marksman atoned for the miss. Another Bailey centre came back off the far post, and CARSLEY was in the right place at the right time to knock in the rebound. Lewis Haydock replaced Woods on 63 minutes. Two minutes later, Grimshaw got around his man and slid the ball across goal, but no one in a Green shirt was around to finish. Man of the Match Ross O'Farrell was on hand to clear a cross with a last-ditch tackle, then nothing came off from a Charnock corner which was won by Darr, the referee blowing for a foul by Darr when jumping. Eastwood made a good save from Dawson after he took the ball round two Charnock defenders. Lancaster continued to press and looked to extend the scoreline. One such instance saw Walker do well to snuff out an attack. A deliberate handball from Williams gave Charnock a free kick and himself a caution, Haydock's chipped effort to the back post was headed away by Williams himself, this was followed up with an O'Farrell skied effort. A hard tackle on Owen Green saw Dawson's name being taken, and with the free kick headed to Young, he could only see a rising effort clear the crossbar. The game, as expected, fizzled out to a canter. Jake Eastwood notably pulled off a couple of good saves to keep the scoreline down, but all the damage was done and the visitors left Mossie Park victorious and progressed.

A s I sit here in the my daughters house on the outskirts of the grand old Hertfordshire town of Hitchin, I

find myself alone in the dining room in the corner, you know the one I mean, the one especially designated and set-aside for the family’s naughty boys and girls. The four grandchildren have very reluctantly slipped upstairs to, what is for them, an unwelcome night’s sleep following a night of song and hooliganism. The neighbours too have all slipped away into the night; less than silently following a session of ribald balladry and no little alcoholic consumption. My fingertips unrelentingly sting due to some heavy guitar strumming during the night’s shenanigans and from prolonged banjo playing for the Leyland Morris Team through the afternoon and evening of the day previously. I had therefore little time to prepare adequately my ‘Secretary’s Notes’ and “Isn’t That A Pip?’ articles for tonight’s programme, having also helped make arrangements for the Ramsbottom United friendly fixture earlier in the week which, weather permitting, should have taken place at Mossie Park at the weekend.

However, with a sudden onset of writer's-block, a condition primarily associated with writing, in which an author loses the ability to produce new work, or experiences a creative slowdown, I begin this awesome task with some trepidation. My head is still distracted by the lyrics and tune of ‘The Cobbler’s Daughter’, which is hardly conducive to writing a football article.

Then, low and behold, a Guardian Angel arrived ‘out of the blue’. That is of course, if you actually believe in Guardian Angels. Well I do. This one came in the shape of North West Counties League, League Secretary John Deal, who sent us a copy of the minutes of November’s League Management

Meeting. It was 30 pages long. It took some getting through I can tell you and it whiled away the time to some tune.

Despite much of the minutes being embargoed, it was good to see a fuller picture being given about the FA’S restructuring of the National League System in 2020-21. It will hardly impact on us, other than the possible influx of newcomers to all three of our Divisions which could arrive via lateral movement from our sister leagues at Steps 5 and 6. It will be very interesting to see how things pan out. The three promotion places from our Premier Division was confirmed and so the mad scramble will no doubt intensify as the season rolls on. There are some interesting applicants from our Step 7 feeder leagues and of course the much publicised application coming from a newly constituted club form outside the National League System in the shape of FC Isle of Man. I’m not sure if I can reveal the list of interested clubs mentioned in the League Management meeting minutes but no doubt these will be revealed in the fullness of time by the North West Counties League via the League website. It must be remembered though that decisions made as to which applicants are successful in attaining Step 6 status is made by the Football Association’s Leagues Committee and not by the League competitions themselves who have little input. In days past a league competition and its member clubs made the call regarding applications to membership. Those days are now long gone due to the development of the national league structure (pyramid).

A further issue remains as to the situation regarding Bury. The latest winding up petition in the court was adjourned until the 4th December to see if the club had been paying too much tax!!!!! What a sad saga this whole matter is turning out to be. Just how it will all end is anybody’s guess. In the meantime, the football people of Bury must stand aside unable to support a town

ISN'T THAT A PIP? DAVE ROWLAND

Whatever occurs, well done one and all.

team and with little sign of whether the old club will survive or not. Major issues surrounding the ownership of Gigg Lane is also overshadowing any developments.

Many of our older fans will remember our visits to Marshside near Southport where, for many seasons, we regularly played against Fleetwood Hesketh. Some years ago; about seven I think, the club fell out with the sports club who owned the ground and changed their name to Southport Hesketh and moved from Fylde Road to Bankfield Lane in Churchtown. They remain in the Premier Division of the West Lancashire League and remain

at Bankfield Lane. A newly named Fleetwood Hesketh emerged to play at Fylde Road a season following Southport Hesketh’s move but they did not last a season in the Mid Lancashire League. Various efforts were made over the intervening years to establish a football team at Fylde Road. The latest one is a club called Richmond who operate in Division 3 of the Mid Lancashire League. Last week they announced that they had changed their name to Fleetwood Hesketh Richmond in order “to further our development and evolution as a club”. Now isn’t that a pip?Dave Rowland, Secretary.

EAGLEY 2 CHARNOCK RICHARD 1West Lancashire League Premier Division15th November 2014

Team: Gavin Bates, Spencer Bibby (Jamie Sanderson 70), Ross O’Farrell, Jack Bennett (Danny Nolan 81), Ashley Young, Mike Fletcher, Damian Dashti, Andy Roberts, Carl Grimshaw, Ryan Donnellan (David Burrows 62), David Prout. SUBS: (Not Used) John Sanderson, Ian Dickinson

Charnock fell to their second league defeat of the season at bottom of the table Eagley. A very competitive game looked as if it was going to finish as a 1-1 draw both goals having come in the first half but with Charnock surging forward looking for a winner Eagley were the team in snatch a late goal.

Once again missing players presented manager Andy Westwell with what is becoming a weekly problem “what players are available for this game?” Hayton had work commitments and Fisher dropped out at the last minute having suffered an upset stomach overnight. There was some good news however; Ashley Young made himself available with Padiham having no fixture and John Sanderson and Ian Dickinson were both recovered enough from injury to make the bench.

Other changes saw Bibby start at right back with Dashti in front of him. Carl Grimshaw and Donnellan started up front in place of Burrows and Nolan. Prout replaced Jamie Sanderson.

Charnock kicked off playing towards the clubhouse end but the home side made the better start. A Pryce centre saw Horan test Bates. Eagley were full of running and lost no time in getting the ball forward. Warburton was behind a number of early attacks but Charnock had a chance to take the lead on 10 minutes when Grimshaw got in on goal but his touch was poor and McDonald in the home goal scrambled the ball clear with his legs. Pryce was a threat down the right and Bates had to save with his foot when he stormed into the

area on 13 minutes. The game was end to end and the home side were producing shots on target. A Dashti cross from the right found Prout at the back post but Eagley broke away and Pryce sent a shot just beyond the far post. Eagley took the lead on 25 minutes Warburton put a cross in from the right and Horan saw a glancing header beat Bates. However only four minutes later Charnock were level after Prout slid GRIMSHAW in on the left of the area and he shot across McDonald just inside the far post. Dashti was switched to left back on 30 minutes to stop the runs of Pryce. Bibby moved forward and O’Farrell swapped to right back. A diving header from Grimshaw on 37 minutes went over the bar and then Roberts saw his header at the back post saved. A free kick from the right on 42 minutes saw Roberts again at the back post he put his header disappointingly wide.

Charnock stepped up their game from the start of the second half but they created few chances. Warburton’s shot had Bates scrambling after it took a deflection but it was past the post for a corner. Grimshaw headed a diagonal ball from Prout on the left over the bar. Burrows came on for Donnellan after 62 minutes and provided an additional threat up front. Jamie Sanderson came on for Bibby after 70 minutes and immediately Burrows got clear he chipped the ball over the advancing McDonald but it went past the post. A minute late Jamie Sanderson centre saw Grimshaw head straight at the keeper. The game was now largely being played in the Eagley half with Neary standing out in a resolute home defence and Charnock were struggling to create chances. Nolan came on for Bennett as Charnock looked to win the game. Grimshaw did get the ball in the net but there was no surprise when he was flagged offside. The inevitable happened in the 87th minute when Pryce found room on the edge of the area and his shot beat Bates. A disappointing result but once again Charnock had paid dearly for not taking their chances.

CHARNOCK RICHARD 4 AFC DARWEN 1WEST LANCASHIRE LEAGUE PREMIER DIVISIONSATURDAY 14TH NOVEMBER 2009

Team: Kevin Baldwin, Phil Jackson, Andy Battersby, Mark Kerr, Stewart Howson, David Prout, Andy Roberts, Alex Randell, Jimmy King (Chris Robinson 58), John Sanderson (Jordan McFayden 86), Carl Grimshaw. SUBS: (Not Used) Tony Hartley.

Following their heavy defeat in their last game, 5-1 to Garstang, it was important that Charnock returned to winning ways against Darwen. After taking an early lead from the penalty spot Charnock spent a large part of the first half on the defensive. Darwen equalised and looked the most likely team to score but in added time of the first half Charnock scored twice to give them a surprising half time lead. The second half saw the Villagers dominant but they missed several chances before debut making Chris Robinson added a fourth goal late in the game.

After another unsettled week it was touch and go whether this game would go ahead but, although the pitch cut up somewhat, there were no problems with the playing surface.

Charnock, already missing several members of their squad, were without Liam Hayton who was injured in training in midweek. There were two new signings in the squad Stewart Howson, from AFC Fylde, started at left back and Chris Robinson was on the bench.

There was little sign of the gale force winds forecasted but there was a westerly breeze which in hindsight seemed to have a bigger influence on the game than could have been expected.

Charnock kicked off playing towards the Mawdesley Plantation End and almost conceded a goal in the first minute, a rasping drive rebounding out from the underside of the crossbar.

Darwen soon showed that they could unsettle the home defence with some direct fast running tactics as the game produced some exciting end-to-end football. Charnock took the lead, after 14 minutes, from a penalty converted by RANDELL after Sanderson was brought down cutting into the box. Darwen continued to look dangerous and the home defence had some difficult situations, The visitors equalised after 29 minutes when a left wing cross was turned home at the near post. Charnock should have restored their lead after a brilliant cross from Randell found Grimshaw at the back post but he only managed to divert the ball beyond the post. There was a let off for Charnock on 41 minutes when a cross drifted across the goal only for two visiting forwards to fail to divert the ball home.

After being on the back foot for most of the first half Charnock scored twice in added time. Firstly, ROBERTS hooked the ball into the top corner in the 46th minute then PROUT cut in and beat the keeper in the third minute of added time.

After their display in the first half Charnock could not be complacent even with a 3-1 lead but surprisingly Darwen failed to produce their earlier form and Charnock totally dominated the half. In the first minute of the half a cross shot from Grimshaw hit the back post and bounced out. There were a number of gilt-edged chances for Charnock that were missed and little was seen of the visitors’ attack. Chris Robinson replaced Jimmy King and almost scored with his first kick. On 34 minutes Baldwin pulled off a magnificent save to a point blank header, it was Darwen’s almost only chance of the half but the goal would have been disallowed for offside. Jordan McFayden came on in place of Sanderson with four minutes left. On 89 minutes ROBINSON found the corner of the net from the edge of the penalty area. There was still time for McFayden to mark his debut with a goal in added time when a centre found him with only the keeper to beat but he was thwarted by a good save from the visiting shot-stopper.

T his Charnock performance must rank as one of the best so far this season with the visitors arriving

with an impressive record this term having only lost one league game. The Villagers took the lead on 23 minutes doubled it three minutes later and went in at the interval leading 2-0 having largely dominated the half. In the second half Charnock continued to run the game and a further two goals in the final quarter of the game saw the team in green record a second consecative 4-0 home win.

There was only one change to the starting eleven that defeated Skelmersdale United 4-0 ten days earlier, Ascroft was required in his coaching role at Blackburn Rovers so once again reserve goalkeeper Eastwood was in goal, the bench was unchanged. It was an overcast, chilly afternoon but the light rain that started before kick-off ceased in the second half. The pitch, as usual, was in good condition.Whitchurch won the toss and chose to play towards the Mawdesley Plantation end. There was a real blow for the Villagers in the first minute when Aaron Griffith went down having received a blow to his face. He failed to recover and had to leave the field and Woods replaced him on five minutes. Walker dropped into the back three with Woods operating on the left. The first 20 minutes saw both teams threaten but neither side could produce a shot on target.

The closest that Charnock came was on 21 minutes when Darr headed a corner narrowly wide. A fine spell of neat passing football led to Charnock taking the lead on 23 minutes with FAIRHURST completing the move with an accurately struck shot into the top corner of the net. There was another half chance a minute later a deep cross to beyond the far post was headed back across goal by Grimshaw but goalkeeper Parton collected before any home player could react. It was a similar cross from the right, this time by Darr, on 26 minutes that saw Charnock increase their lead. Again it was GRIMSHAW just beyond the goal who cleverly headed back over the head of Parton and the ball hit the far post and rolled over the line.

On 30 minutes when Eastwood came out to a free kick and missed the ball completely, however, Grimshaw was on the line to nod the ball out for a corner. On 36 minutes Minshall reacted to a decision by the assistant and, in anger, punched the ball away and he was sent to the sin bin. Charnock failed to take advantage of their opponents being reduced to 10 men but a healthy two goal lead was more than satisfactory at half time considering the record of their opponents.

In the second half the match continued in a similar manner to the first with the visitors struggling to have a shot on target. Davison cut in after 47 minutes but his left foot shot went narrowly over the bar. Darr played Haydock in

but Parton easily collected his deflected shot. On 54 minutes Whitchurch had their first real shot on goal but it was straight at Eastwood. Johns had a great chance to reduce the arears on 57 minutes but his effort was nowhere near the target and it summarise the performance from Whitchurch neatly. After 63 minutes WOODS picked the ball up 40 yards out and ran forward before hitting a powerful shot just inside the left hand post. Immediately Charnock replaced Fairhurst with Bennett. On 71 minutes Darr gave way for Oxley. The day deteriorated further for the visitors on 73 minutes when BENNETT raced into the area to finish off another fine attack. Although the Villagers continued to produce some fine attacking football and the visitors plugged away everyone knew that the game was, to all intents and purposes, over so the final 15 or so minutes lacked the tension of earlier in the match.

Charnock have already had several excellent wins so far this season but this win was an example of how good they can be when they move the ball around quickly, produce plenty of off-the-ball running and convert their chances. Clean sheets have been scarce this season the first only in the win over Skelmersdale United so two on the run is particularly welcome.

T he reserves management team would like to extend a warm welcome to the players, officials and fans of Bootle.

We hope that you enjoy the hospitality this evening and have a safe journey home afterwards.

We also wish the first team management and players the best of luck and we hope that you can continue the recent good run of good performances and more importantly results. Tom will be a huge loss to us in the reserves but being part of the first team set up is an amazing opportunity for him, we wish him all the best in his progression.

The reserve team got back to playing a week last Saturday. We are now on first name terms at Newby Bridge services and we called in again on the way to Dalton. The weather wasn’t as bad as it had been but there was a heavy pitch. Dalton are an experienced side and had managed to hold us to a draw at Mossie Park so we knew it would be a tough game.

We took another development player, Cian Spencer, with us after he had impressed in training. We had a couple of players drop out through injury and other commitments so we had to change the formation a little and this meant that we handed Cian his first start. He did play very well and was unlucky not to score, their keeper tipping a free kick onto the bar in the second half.

We started well and went a goal up but Dalton began to frustrate us by keeping a good defensive shape and started to play their way back in. They had several chances to score, a combination of good defending, some great saves by Luke Rigby and the woodwork kept the score at 2-1 to Dalton at half- time.

We asked the players to respond, pick up the tempo and also to look at different ways to breakdown Dalton’s defensive shape and they took this on board. We started to play some very good football to stretch Dalton and create numerous chances. Scott Hendy put in his best performance for us so far and scored all 4 of our goals. It looked like he would go on to score a few more as the game closed out.

However one of their players was injured. It wasn’t a foul and we were given a throw in but the player suffered a head injury so the game was halted. An ambulance was called and there was a lot of confusion about how things should proceed. We

were keen not to have to replay the fixture for 6 minutes of play but the light was closing out. After about 45 minutes and ambulance came and took the injured player from the pitch.

Dalton took the opportunity to refresh and regroup. They put us under a lot of physical direct pressure and scored soon after the restart. We did look very nervy, though tried to play our game. For the second match running we were pinned back right at the end in Cumbria. We probably would have taken the draw before the game but it did feel like a defeat.

We have learned from the last couple of performances and we plan to rectify this in training. We look forward to a rare home game this weekend and are really hope that we can get back to winning ways and build some momentum for the rest of the season.

We were back in action this Saturday in a fixture that had been cancelled earlier in the season. On paper it looked a tricky tie against a decent Garstang Reserve side. As the first team were involved in a friendly, we played on the clubhouse pitch, which had done well to stand up the weather. The squad were desperate to get back to winning ways and we made a great start, scoring from a set piece early on.

We created several chances while not at our best and it looked like the missed opportunities would come back to haunt us when Garstang drew level just before half time through a disputed penalty decision. The lads came out for the second half determined to keep their home run going and we managed to restrict Garstang and it seemed only a matter of time before a chance would go in.

Eventually we got a breakthrough and managed to add another soon after. The rest of the match was very comfortable without playing our best football. It sets us up nicely for the home game this Saturday. This will be another really tough test against a decent Kendal United side. We have a bit more to give performance wise but I would be more happy if we can take 3 points again

I make no apologies for returning to Video Assistant Referee (VAR) because in its first season in use in the Premier

League it is, as predicted, creating more controversy than it is solving. Back in the dark ages when some of the more mature people around this club were around it was said in 1955 when ITV starting transmitting and TV adverts were first shown that you could go and make a cup of tea whilst they were on.

Well it is the same with VAR when watching a live match, take for instance the game between Everton and Tottenham on Sunday 3rd November when the ball hit the arm of Dele Alli, it took an astonishing 3 minutes 13 seconds to make a decision, easy to boil a kettle and brew-up in that time, and the verdict was just as amazing: no penalty! Now what was he doing with his hand above his head, it was a stone-wall penalty even before the new advice on hand ball came in this season. In the earlier Watford-Leicester game we saw what appeared to be a dive and the referee waved play on only for VAR after much deliberation, kettle on again, to award a penalty. Jamie Carragher said a while ago in defence of VAR that at least we are getting the right decisions now. Are we? On the same weekend there was a cracking explanation by the Premier League regarding a VAR offside decision “the player’s armpit was offside”. You could not make it up!Another point about VAR, it appears to be using top line referees sat in the VAR centre somewhere in west London. Why are they using active fit referees? Surely it is an ideal opportunity to use recently retired officials who no longer meet the fitness requirements but have years of experience. With more and more officials required at the top level it leaves non-league football short of referees: allegedly two games in Division 1 of the West Lancashire league were postponed on Saturday 2nd November because of lack of referees.

Whilst there is all this fascination at the top level in getting correct decisions for offside referees seem

to be largely ignoring some of the other laws of the football. Take foul throws, they seem to be going out of fashion as few players are penalised these days, many throws are started with the ball high above the head not down at the back of the neck. Then consider from where throw-ins are taken sometimes up to 10 yards from where the ball went out of play. A while ago it was a yellow card if you stood closer than 10 yards to prevent a free kick going ahead; now opposition players are frequently close to the ball when free kicks being taken. It all seems a result of football having to be played at top speed: why? If it was insisted that players were at least 10 yards from free kicks and throw-ins were taken from the correct position it would give the players a little recovery time and then perhaps the players would not be as tired as so many managers say they are after a game.

For many seasons it has been the case that defenders can block, push or hold off an opposition player to allow the ball to go out for a goal kick. Under the laws of the game it is either obstruction or a foul, maybe a penalty if it is in the area. Then we come to the situation in penalty areas when corners or free kicks are being delivered; it often looks more like a rugby match with the holding, blocking and shirt pulling. It was agreed a couple of seasons ago that there would be crackdown but when referee Mike Dean correctly gave a penalty in a match there was an uproar from managers and players and it has carried on as before. The situation was summed up recently when there was a goal scored as a result of a corner, Gary Neville said that the player should have been blocked off “get your arm up and stop him from running” was his recommendation. I would have thought that was a foul, it would be anywhere else on the pitch, and should result in a penalty.

In the recent televised game between Charlton and Preston a visiting player was dragged down in the area and correctly the referee awarded a penalty. The offending player protested vigorously. On what basis I cannot imagine but it shows how players these days consider tactics similar to Rugby Union as perfectly acceptable! Keith Reader

Due to printing and editor deadlines I have to writethis final column of the season with four leaguegames outstanding so it is impossible to comment onCharnock’s final position in the table and, most importantly, where they will be playing their footballnext season. Will it be in the Premier Division by automatic promotion or through the play-offs ormaybe we will have to be satisfied with having a second season in Division One but whatever happensit has been a very successful and exciting first seasonin the North West Counties League.

This season saw Charnock make their debut in the FAVase and it has been very satisfactory but with a little bit ofluck it could have been even more successful. In the preliminary rounds we won at Whickham in the North Eastthen visited Yorkshire to beat Harrogate Railway Athletic. The First Round Proper saw a home tie against old opponents Barnoldswick Town which we won after extratime. The home defeat at Mossie Park at the hands ofStaveley Miners Welfare was largely due to having to fieldan understrength team; suspensions for Spencer Bibby,Josh Norgate and Mike Fletcher all made them ineligible,Ashley Young missed through a knee problem and thenlosing Danny Smith to injury before half time and a missedpenalty all contributed to the defeat. If we had won wewould have had a trip up to play South Shields of theNorthern League who are now through to the Wembleyfinal. At the time they were averaging gates of over 1200.Win or lose it would have been a bumper pay day for theclub with a share of the gate receipts and more FA money for reaching that stage of the competition. As it was Staveley made the journey, pocketed the money andlost 3-0.

Charnock were drawn away to Bamber Bridge in the firstround of the Lancashire FA Challenge Trophy, it was ourdebut in the competition and against all the odds cameaway with a 2-0 win. Drawn away at Ashton Athletic in thenext round we had plenty of chances to win the game inthe first half but in the end lost 1-0. Ashton went on to win2-1 against Radcliffe Borough in the final at the MacronStadium after knocking out Chorley in the semi-final. A littlemore accuracy with our shooting at Ashton and who knowswhat could have happened? In our league cup debuts wemade early exits in both competitions. In the Macron Cupwe were unlucky to lose 2-1 at Handley Town, the winningpenalty being awarded for the ball hitting Josh Norgate’sshoulder. We successfully negotiated our way through theReusch First Division Cup to the quarter-finals where welost 4-1 at home to Widnes.

Football squads inevitably evolve over the years and anumber of new signings were made for this season. Some players have fitted in well and have made regularappearances others disappeared; several did not evenmake one appearance. Over previous seasons CarlGrimshaw and David Burrows formed a successful goalscoring partnership for the club. Last season they totalled77 goals between them and there was the expectancythat they would score a similar number this season. Unfortunately domestic problems resulted in Dave making himself unavailable and he has been sorely missed.

In the 2015-16 season Damian Dashti passed the landmark of 500 appearances for the first team and hehas continued to feature in most match squads this season. He is now approaching 550 appearances whichis another remarkable record of dedication to CharnockRichard FC. There have been other impressive performances by players this season but for me oneplayer has stood out above anyone else - Ross O’Farrellhas had an outstanding season to date. Ross is anotherplayer that has been at Charnock for almost all his career first appearing in the ‘A’ team back in season2007-08 from where he has worked his way up to become a regular in the first team squad. He is mychoice as “Player of the Year”.

Finally I must mention the support that the club have enjoyed both home and away. To date home attendanceshave only dropped below 100 once and the average sofar is 140. Everyone at the club has put in a remarkableamount of time and effort and come May we will be looking forward to our second season in the North WestCounties League. I hope to be writing this column againnext season, many thanks for reading it.
