Jo Broadhead, is a matrimonial lawyer at Raworths LLP in Harrogate, a role that she has held for 13 years whilst studying for and completing her CILEX education to become a Fellow in 2009. Jo was also awarded the CILEX Presidents Medal in 2010 and she is our branch Vice Chairperson for 2013/2014.

As well as always wanting to be a lawyer, Jo has always had a passion for motorsports and has travelled all over the world with her partner to support his off road racing career. Jo enjoyed attending many events but never had the time or bravery to become any more involved than her ‘race support’ duties of refuelling both man and bike, pit board work and a change of goggles when required!

However there were many changes which occurred in Jo’s life just as she qualified as a fellow, not least she found that she had a whole host of free time on her hands from the gap left by no longer requiring study time, a serious health scare and she had the need for a new challenge and goal now that she had reached her previous one to become a Lawyer.

She decided ‘if you can’t beat them join them’ and she bought her first motorbike much to the astonishment and admiration of her partner. After a couple of weeks of customising the bike to her signature colour she couldn’t wait to get going. She says that she had watched so many races she thought that it looked ‘pretty easy’ but nothing had prepared her for the test of balance, skill and stamina. With a wobbly start including some quite impressive fall offs she slowly mastered the technique required. From the very first day on the bike she was bitten by the racing bug and most weekends she will now be found at the track.

She finds racing an escape from the 9 to 5 nature of being a lawyer and she says that dealing with an emotional aspect of the Law such a family work, it helps to keep everything in perspective and enables her to leave the emotion of some cases at the office on an evening.

Jo says that she has approached her riding career in the same way she did her studies, she says that you get out what you put in and this has taken her racing career all around the UK and as far afield as Austria when she rode for GBR.

Jo says ‘riding is an adventure you really never know how the day will turn out, what challenges it will throw at you and the adrenaline rush racing gives is addictive.’ She adds ‘this is much like a day in the office as you never know who will come in, with what problems and adrenaline rush of advocacy in court is also, oddly addictive!’

Clients who have read my profile are often fascinated by my riding and find it hard to believe that the suited person sat before them will be up to her knees in mud at the weekend but this often leads to clients feeling more comfortable and in turn being able to open up to me. Equally many riding colleagues often have an image of a Lawyer, which at the track I couldn’t be further from. This in turn has led to considerable new work referrals as people get to know you as a person and not the suited lawyer!

Jo philosophy on life is best summed up in by her nieces’ favourite phrase, YOLO (you only live once) Jo lives life to the maximum and relishes the challenges that it throws at her. She says that sometimes in life you end up in a muddy heap wondering how you got there but the quicker you get up the better. In the words of one of Jo’s riding inspirations ‘the quicker you get the bike back rubber side down the less fuel you will lose!’
