DESCRIPTIONOcean going, heavy deck cargo barge, with a superstructure located on SB side of the stem for stability and buoyancy during submersible operations. The barge is submerged by means of grounding at the stern. Hull form and stern skeggs are specially designed to increase course stability and towing speed relatively to a conventional barge hull shape. The pontoon is divided into 15 tanks and two forepeak tanks by means of two longitudinal and fi ve transverse bulkheads. Each tank is equipped with a remote
sounding system, a manual sounding pipe and two manholes (of which one is a quick release type). The engine and pump room is located forward below the main deck and is accessible via the control tower. All cleats and bollards are recessed, resulting in an absolute fl ush deck aft of the fl otation tower.
SUBMERGINGWhen the barge is submerged down to the grounding site the stern is seated fi rmly on the ocean fl oor (sea bottom). Special consideration must be given to the grounding site because it must facilitate both a secure placement and easy retrieval.
Maximum submerging depthFwd part of deck ...................... 8.7 m above BL........................................... (2.0 m above deck)Aft part of deck ...................... 13.5 m above BL............. (trimmed condition, 6.8 m above deck)
BALLASTINGGeneralThe barge is equipped with a ballast system with a total capacity of 1500 m3/hour at 1 bar pressure. The ballast system is operated locally from the pump room, except major valves and ballast pumps that also can be remotely controlled from the control room on top of the superstructure.
TanksThe ballast system consists of a total of 17 ballast tanks, all located in the pontoon. Each tank equipped with a separate ballast pipe running from the ballast system in the pump room. All tanks connected to a remote sounding system (BB22 only).
MACHINERY EQUIPMENTGeneratorsThe barges are equipped with the following machinery:
- One (1) diesel electric generator, type Valmet 620, equipped with a Stamford Newage generator supplying 119 kVA at 440 V / 60 Hz to the main switchBOArd for powering one of the ballast pumps and general electric supply.
- One (1) diesel engine, type Valmet 420, directly coupled to the second ballast pump via a fl exible connection.
Ballast Pumps1 x 750 m3/hour at 1 bar, direct diesel driven.1 x 750 m3/hour at 1 bar, electrically powered.
The two pumps are fully independent from each other, and give redundancy to the ballast system.
MOORING / ANCHORING & CARGO HANDLING EQUIPMENT WinchAn electric multipurpose winch is used for cargo handling and for retrieving towing equipment during submersible operations. This winch is “locally operated” and mounted on top of a superstructure. The winch also acts as an anchor windlass.
AnchorA 2.5 tonnes stockless SPEC type anchor installed, positioned in the bow. The anchor is installed with an eight metres chain fore runner and a total wire length of 180 m. The wire is of type Ø 41 mm, certifi ed for a breaking force of 98 tonnes.
BollardsThe barge is equipped with the following bollards:- 4 double bollards, located one in eachcorner of the barge.- 8 double post cleats, located four on each side recessed in the deck at the deck edge.
The cleats are cast steel with a dimension of 1200 mm. The double bollards are according to NS 2584 (Norwegian Standard) Ø 315 and have the following capacities:When mooring ........................................205 kNWhen towing ...........................................540 kN
TOWING EQUIPMENTMain towing equipment, includes:
1. Two smith brackets located at main deck level fwd, SB and Port side approx. 7.3 m from CL.
BOA’s fl eet of oceangoing, heavy deck cargo barges specialize in the transportation of large and heavy equipment. BOA’s barges feature two super structures for stability and buoyancy and provide open deck space for transporting large and complex equipment including the transportation and installation of jackets, modules, structures and offshore platforms, perform topside fl oatovers and dry docking by submersible barge.
BOA Barge 21/22• HEAVY DECK CARGO BARGE
• [email protected] | www.boa.no
2. A chain towing bridle consisting of:
- 2 x type 58 mm U3 chainlegs of approx. 17 m length each
- 1 x triangular (delta) plate
- 1 x type 58 mm U3 chain “pigtail” of approx. 9 m length
- Complete with shackles and endlinks The delta plate, pigtail and bridle legs can be hoisted up at main deck level by the multipurpose winch and the A-frame located at the bow in CL.
Emergency towing equipment, includes:
1. A smith bracket located at the main deck in CL fwd.
2. A chain of length approx. 4 m connecting the emergency towing wire to the smith bracket.
3. An emergency towing wire of length approximately 100 m, Ø 100 mm, secured to SB side of the barge, and with a spelter socket located at main deck aft.
CapacitiesThe main towing equipment has a SWL of 85 tonnes. I.e. according to the typical class rules, tugs with a bollard pull up to 116 tonnes can be used without restrictions on the towing force.
NAVIGAITONAL LIGHTS & SAFETY EQUIPMENTNavigational lights are powered by the vessel’s electrical system and by solar cells as set forth by governing laws within country of registry (fl agging authority). Properly maintained and serviced safety equipment is always kept onBOArd.

The two directly operated diesel pumps are independent from each other. The electrical system for the 750 m3/hour pump is independent from the diesel operated pumps. This gives redundancy in the ballast system in case of failure in one of the systems.
Extra redundancy is given by the separate stripping system with its own pump and ejector. The stripping system is equipped with a ballast ejector for stripping of tanks.
The capacity of the ejector is approx. 250 m3/hour. The deballasting of the tanks can be done by an additional pump (multipurpose pump). This can be done by directly using this pump or by using this pump to power the ejector. The ejector is used when extra suction force is needed. When using the ejector the multipurpose pump is pumping water from the sea chest through the ejector and further to an overBOArd discharge.
The ejector is then given the extra suction force for maximum draining the ballast tanks through the stripping system pipes.
