Chaska High School Hall of Fame Induction Class of 2008 (Inaugural Class) HAROLD “KELLY” POPPITZ, Class of 1941 In 1941 the CHS baseball team, behind the pitching of Captain Poppitz, won the conference championship. Kelly was a letter winner in football, basketball and baseball. In basketball he was all conference, all district and all state. He served n the army during W.W.II for three years. Kelly graduated from St. Olaf College where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was captain of the football and baseball teams. In 1947 he played for the Chaska Cubs state championship team. Kelly and Shirley Poppitz had three sons, all of whom graduated from CHS. Kelly died in 1996 COACH AL MOONEY Al Mooney became the coach of all sports at Chaska High School in 1922. He died in 1946 at the age of 46 after a legendary career. HAROLD “KELLY” POPPITZ, Class of 1941

In 1941 the CHS baseball team, behind the pitching of Captain Poppitz, won the conference championship. Kelly was a letter winner in football, basketball and baseball. In basketball he was all conference, all district and all state. He served n the army during W.W.II for three years. Kelly graduated from St. Olaf College where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball and was captain of the football and baseball teams. COACH AL MOONEY

Al Mooney became the coach of all sports at Chaska High School in 1922. He died in 1946 at the age of 46 after a legendary career. Mooney’s winning percentage in basketball was .725 and his record in football was 50-23-5. Mooney started high school basketball at CHS in 1935. all of his teams were known as “Mooneylads” in honor of this man of integrity who positively influenced so many young people over the years. The “Al Mooney” award which is presented each year to the outstanding male athlete at HCS is named in his honor.

Bill was an outstanding three sport athlete at HCS. He was all conference in football and baseball and was basketball captain. Bill had a .429 batting average in baseball his senior year. At 19 Bill signed with the St. Paul Saints and played first and second base for the club. He twice attended the Brooklyn Dodger’s training camp. He served in the Air Force for three years during W.W. II. Bill was the elected Sheriff of Carver County for 10 years.

ROY EDER, Class of 1942

Roy was a three sport athlete at CHS. He played on the 1941 football team which won the Minnesota Valley Championship. He was an outstanding baseball player in high school and by 1944 was property of the St. Paul Saints. Roy was sent to the Brooklyn Dodger’s training camp before and after he served 27 months in the military during W.W. II. He was a member of the 1947 Chaska Cubs, state amateur baseball champions. Roy and his wife Phyllis had four children, all of whom graduated from CHS. Roy Eder died in 1988.

EARL ENGELHARDT, Class of 1938

Earl “Scrubby: Engelhardt was an outstanding three sport athlete at CHS. He was all conference in football and was captain of both the basketball and baseball teams. He was all district in basketball in 1938. As a World War II marine, Scrubby saw combat in the South Pacific. He was employed by the Chaska School district for 31 years. Earl and Aldori’s seven children graduated from CHS: six sons carried on the Engelhardt athletic tradition

ROY “TUDDIE” LINDENBERG, Class of 1917

Roy “Tuddie” Lindenberg graduated from Chaska High School in 1917. he was an outstanding athlete and scholar. At Gustavus College Roy won eleven letters in football, basketball and baseball and was all-conference in each sport. He had all 28 points in a basketball victory over St. John’s and was conference scoring leader. In 1926 Roy joined the Gustavus faculty and coached championship teams in both basketball and football. Lindenberg Pool at the college was named for him. In 1954 he was named to the State Athletic Commission by Gov. E. Elmer Anderson. Roy Lindenberg died in 1960.

LUCIE KLAMMER HARTLEY, Class of 1928

Lucie Klammer Hartley graduated from Chaska High School as its valedictorian in 1928. she graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Minnesota in 1932. Lucie served 10 years on the Carver School Board and was principal of the Carver Elementary School for 9 year. She later taught in the Chaska School system and authored three books which highlighted local history. Scott and Lucie Hartley has two children who both graduated from CHS. Lucie died in 2003.

CY LEIVERMANN, Class of 1936

Cy Leivermann was an early big man at 6’6” in CHS basketball history. He was on three conference championship teams and won all conference and all district

honors in 1935 and 1936. cy received a football scholarship from Santa Ana Jr. College in California where he was named the All Southern California Little Pro in 1937. Cy graduated from Santa Ana in 1938 he played town team basketball with the Chaska D-Lights which won the Southern Minnesota State Championship. Cy and Virginia Leivermann’s six children all graduated from CHS. Cy died in 1978.

ARTHUR HEINISCH, Class of 1936

As a “one man” track and field team in 1935 and 1936, Art placed first in the shot put at the district and region meets and qualified for the State Tournament. Art was an all conference and all district guard on the CHS basketball team. He was a star player on the CHS football team. An excellent baseball player, Art played with the Chaska Cubs and was signed by Winnipeg of Northern League.

HAROLD E. HAPP, Class of 1929

Harold Happ graduated from Chaska High School in 1929. he was captain of the football team and was captain, all conference, all district and all region in basketball. Harold attended Gustavus College and was a star guard on the Gustie basketball team from 1930-1934. He graduated from college in 1934 with a degree in history and coaching. Harold and Dorothy’s two daughters, Judith and Jennifer, graduated from CHS. Harold died in 1996.

JAMES F. FABER, Class of 1930

At CHS Jim Faber was the editor of the “Purple and Gold Parrot” the school newspaper. Hew was a honor student and a debate team star. In 1938 as sports editor of the Weekly Valley Herald, Jim and his counterpart at the Waconia newspaper, instituted the “Little Brown Jug” tradition between the two schools in football and basketball. In later years Jim was president of the Minnesota Chamber of Commerce and he served as the private secretary of Governor C. Elmer Anderson. In 1989 Jim and his wife, Clairette, returned to Chaska. He died in 2005.

WALLU LAHL, Class of 1947

Wally Lahl graduated from CHS in 1947 as a three sport star in football, basketball and baseball. He was all conference left halfback in football. In 1947 Wally was captain of the basketball team and was named to the all conference team. He broke the all-time scoring record that same year. Wally’s record makes him one of the top ten all-time scoring leaders in CHS history. Wally was also a member of the Chaska Cubs baseball team when it won the state championship of amateur baseball in

1947. he coached Little League baseball for many years. Wally and Mary Lahl’s six children all graduated from CHS.

Pamela D. Frasch, Class of 1976

Pam attended the University of Minnesota, graduating with a law degree from William Mitchell Law School. She has written books and had articles published centered around her passion - animal law. Pam is currently employed by Lewis & Clark Law School as an adjunct Professor while serving as General Counsel for the Animal Legal Defense Fund. Effective August 2008, she will become Director of the Animal Law Center at Lewis & Clark Law School.

Bob Roepke, Class of 1964

After an outstanding basketball career at Chaska, Bob distinguished himself as a community leader taking on important roles in the Chaska Economic Development Authority, the Southwest Metro Transit Committee, the Chaska Chamber of Commerce, and many more. Bob also served on the Chaska City Council from 1983 -2002 acting as Mayor for eighteen of those years.

Jan Baker

Jan served students as Assistant Speech Coach, Student Council Advisor, Director of the Theatre Program and Coach of the Knowledge and Quiz Bowl teams. Under her direction, the Knowledge Bowl teams won four State Championships. Her Quiz Bowl teams won three State Titles while finishing second in the nation in 1993 and third in 2000.

Doree Du Toit, Class of 1974

Doree was a member of the Choir, Band and numerous Musical productions. She was part of the ensemble in the schools first musical “Guys and Dolls” in 1971. The following year she played Maria in “West Side Story” and in 1973 she played the role of Meg in “Brigadoon”. Doree capped off her acting career at Chaska playing Eliza in “My Fair Lady”.

Tom Kocka, Class of 1974

While a student at Chaska, Tom was a member of the Choir that received a four star “72” rating. He was also part of the One-Act Play that qualified for the State Meet. He starred in many musical productions including “West Side Story”, “Brigadoon”, “My Fair Lady” and the “Glass Menagerie”.

Patty Kocka Schlader, Class of 1973

Patty was a member of the Choir, Cheerleading team, Pep Club and was named Homecoming Queen in 1973. The school’s first musical, “Guys and Dolls”, was held in 1971 and Patty played the lead role of Sarah Brown. In 1972 she played Anita in “West Side Story” and in 1973 she starred as Fiona in the schools’ performance of “Brigadoon”.

Ron Lybeck, Class of 1972

Ron began to study dance his junior year in high school and in 1972 he choreographed and played one of the leads in “West Side Story”. After graduating, he went on to choreograph numerous musicals for area high schools, colleges and twin cities theatre groups while performing regularly with the Ozone Dance Company.

Scott Berg

Scott was an outstanding coach at Chaska High School for many years. While at Chaska he coached both the Girls and Boys Swimming & Diving Teams before moving outside each spring to coach Boys Tennis. Under his guidance many swimmers and tennis players received many accolades including All-Conference and State Awards.

David W. Dahlke, Class of 1982

Dave excelled in Football and Basketball while at Chaska High School. During his basketball career he was named All-Conference three times and All-State twice. In 1982 he was a finalist for Minnesota’s Mr. Basketball and a McDonalds’ All-American. He also played in the Minnesota vs. Iowa All-Star game. Dave went on to play basketball at the University of Minnesota and Drake University.

Mary A. Daly

Mary served the student-athletes in many roles including Cheerleading Advisor, Pep Club Advisor, GAA Advisor, and Coach of “Extramural” programs. Her biggest contribution came while establishing and coaching girls’ athletics at Chaska. In 1973, Mary established and coached the Girls Volleyball Program; the Girls Track & Field Program; and the Girls Badminton/Table Tennis Team.

Stephanie Herbst-Lucke, Class of 1984

Stephanie won four State Championships in Cross-Country Running and Track and Field while at Chaska. She attended the University of Wisconsin on an athletic

scholarship and won seven Big Ten Titles, five NCAA Championships and six All-American Awards. She was named Big Ten Female Athlete of the Year in 1985-86 and to the Big Ten Top Athletes of the Decade in 2000.

Kristen Lind (Pelowski), Class of 1988

Kristen was a three sport star excelling in Volleyball, Basketball and Track & Field. She won All-Conference awards five times in Basketball and four times each in Volleyball and Track. Kristen was selected to the Basketball All-Metro Team and qualified for the State Meet in both Volleyball and Track. Upon graduation, she accepted a basketball scholarship to Wichita State University.

Merlyn R. Kinkel Merlyn touched the students of Chaska High School on numerous levels. During his tenure he was a superb teacher being “Teacher of the Year” three times. He coached Football and both Girls and Boys Basketball. He later served as Athletic Director at Chaska and Secretary of the Suburban West Athletic Conference.

John Ryski, Class of 1959

John was a standout athlete lettering in four sports while at Chaska. He was awarded All-Conference honors from the Minnesota Valley Conference in Football, Basketball and Baseball while leading those teams to Conference Championships in the same year. John was Sports Editor for the school newspaper and President of the Senior Class and Lettermen’s Club.

Mike Beckman

Mike grew up in Lake City, Iowa. He received his undergraduate degree from Wartburg College. He later attended Washington University graduating with a degree in Physical Therapy. Since the fall of 1991, Mike has been putting his degree to good use serving the student-athletes of Chaska as their physical therapist and number one fan.

Jim Dauwalter, Class of 1969

In 2005, Jim retired as CEO of Entegris ending a thirty-six year career. He is always willing to help Chaska by serving on countless public, private and non-profit boards. Jim has been a member of the Chaska Rotary, Christmas in May, Chaska Chamber of Commerce, St. Francis Hospital Foundation and is Chair of the 2009 PGA Championship to be held at Hazeltine. He has been generous with his time and financial support.

Inducted Class of 2009

Katie MacDonald Bade, Class of 1941

Katie was an honor student at Chaska High School. She was a member of the state ranked girl’s octet choral group. Though organized sports were not offered to young women in 1940, Katie was recognized for her athletic ability in softball and basketball. She organized a city softball team which played the Shakopee Women’s Reformatory team each summer. Katie attended St. Olaf College and was elected the first female student body vice president. Upon graduation she became an instructor in the physical education department of the college. In 1948 she married Chaska High School agriculture teacher/counselor Doug Bade, and they settled in Chaska. Their four children, James, Liz, Meg, and Becky all graduated from CHS and the girls were each elected homecoming queen of their class. An active member of the Chaska Moravian Church, Katie was superintendent of the Sunday school for 30 years. She was president of the Carver County Church Women United and on the board for eight years. Katie was selected the Moravian representative to Minnesota United Church Women. She became the first woman board member of the Western District of the Moravian Church. Katie served as the Chaska coordinator of Meals on Wheels, was a charter member of the Chaska League of Women Voters and was always very active politically.

Wilbert “Twill” Kelm, Class of 1938

Wilbert “Twill” Kelm was an outstanding three sport athlete at Chaska High School. He started playing varsity football as an eighth grader and was named all-conference his senior year. He served as football captain his junior and senior year. In 1937 Twill lead the team to the Minnesota Valley Conference championship. He played on the first organized baseball team from 1935 to 1938. In basketball, “Twill” was a four year starter for Coach Al Mooney. Twill served in World War II as a warrant officer in the Philippines. He married Irene Steinberger of Chaska in 1946. Of their six children, five graduated from Chaska High School and all four sons were involved in athletics. He was a long time employee of the Chaska School District.

Dennis Welter, Class of 1963

Dennis Welter grew up on a farm and attended Chaska High School where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Denny’s athletic career continued at Mankato State University where he played four years of baseball and football. He

is a graduate of MSU-Mankato. Coach Welter served in the U.S. Military from 1969-1971 and is a Viet Nam veteran. Denny accepted a teaching and head coaching position at Chaska High School in 1972. After three years as an assistant, he accepted the head basketball position and held that position for 22 years. During his time at the helm, the Hawks won 11 outright conference championships and advanced to the state tournament as Section Champions in 1981, 1982, 1990, 1992 and 1993 earning two third place finishes, a fourth place finish and a consolation championship. The 1992 Hawk team posted a state best 27-1 record. Coach Welter finished with a career record of 360-140 (72%) all at Chaska. Denny was selected as section Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1992. He is a 39 year member of the Chaska Legion Post #57 and is a 45 year player/member in the Chaska Cubs Baseball club. Denny taught health for 29 years at Chaska High School before retiring in 2000.

Tracy DuToit Swanson, Class of 1955

Tracy DuToit Swanson is a 1955 graduate of Chaska High School. After an active high school experience, Tracy graduated from the University of Minnesota in secondary English education. After moving back to Chaska and starting her family, Tracy began a career of significant community involvement, which helped to define our community and its future. Tracy has been the Director of the Chaska League of Women Voters, chair of the Chaska Parks and Recreation Commission, President and Founder of the Chaska Historical Society (her very special passion), Executive Director of the Chaska Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Metropolitan Council’s Transportation Advisory Board, the first female to hold the office of Mayor of Chaska 1978-1884 and the first female elected to the Carver County Board of Commissioners, 1986-2002. Tracy has been a true community leader, forging a path for female leadership at local city and county units of government. Tracy’s efforts have left a very special and lasting impact on her community. Denny and Tracy Swanson’s three children all graduated from Chaska High School.

Dick Shima, Class of 1957

Dick Shima graduated from Chaska High School in 1957. Dick served as senior class president and valedictorian of his class. He won twelve varsity letters, four each in baseball and football, two each in basketball and track. Dick was co-captain and all conference in basketball and football. In 1957 he was the first recipient of the “Al Mooney Award” given annually to the outstanding senior male athlete. Upon graduation from CHS, Dick accepted a scholarship to Harvard where he continued

to excel both in academics and athletics. At Harvard he won three varsity letters in baseball and was named to several all-star teams. Dick graduated cum laude with a major in mathematics. He became an actuary and served as vice chairman and chief investment officer of the Travelers Insurance Companies.

Jane DuToit Fox, Class of 1966

Jane graduated from Chaska High School in 1966. She became a member of the Chaska High School choir in seventh grade and was a member of the high school band in 4th grade as a first chair alto saxophone player. In 1965 she auditioned and was selected to sing in Minnesota’s All State Choir, the first student from Chaska ever selected. As a junior and senior in high school, Jane participated in solo and ensemble with superior ratings for both vocal and instrumental, was student director the spring play and formed her own singing group that entertained at various community gatherings. Upon graduation, she attended Bemidji State University with a major in vocal music education. She held teaching positions in St. Cloud, Japan, Eden Prairie and Chaska. Jane retired in 2008 after 20 years teaching music in the Chaska School system. Jane organized the Chaska Community Choir which she conducted for 18 years. Jane is married to Barry Fox, retired director of bands at Chaska Middle School East, and they have three children who graduated from CHS having participated in both music and athletics. Jodyne Hagins, Class of 1941

Jody is a 1978 graduate of Chaska High School. She was selected as a high school All-American in track and field, earning 14 gold’s and one silver from 1975-1978. As a senior, she was the first female athlete to win double gold in the shot-put and the discus at the state track and field meet, setting all time state records. Jody participated in Junior Olympics winning two medals at nationals. She became a college All-American at Mankato State University and became the first ever Mankato track and field athlete to earn a national championship in discuss. She was ranked 5th in the world in the shot-put. Jody graduated with a degree in law enforcement and corrections and she currently lives in Cumming, Georgia.

Karl-Dieter Crisman, Class of 1993

Karl-Deter achieved amazing honors while attending Chaska High School. The Knowledge Bowl, Quiz Bowl and Science Bowl teams on which he participated were state champions and nationally ranked. Karl is also an Eagle Scout and was active in band at CHS. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in German and mathematics

in 1998 from Weinberg College of Arts and Science at Northwestern University. He was awarded a Bachelor’s Degree in piano and organ at Northwestern school of Music and a Master’s Degree from Chicago College of Performing Arts. At the University of Chicago, he earned his PH.D in mathematics. Karl is fluent in German and Russian. He is currently an assistant professor of mathematics at Cordon College, MA. Karl- Deter and his wife Valerie (a youth minister at their church in Beverly, MA), have a daughter Miriam and a son Kevin.

John Wilhoit

John Wilhoit has contributed generously to Chaska High School through his outstanding service to the Athletics and Activities Department. His uniquely personal touch when dealing with staff and our students has made John a valued and trusted friend of all Chaska Hawks. His unprecedented service is certainly above the norm. Over the years, John has developed a true connection with our community. John and his wife Terri initiated the Eric Wilhoit Memorial Scholarship to help students further their education beyond high school. Daughter Anna ’91 and Son Eric ‘94 proudly graduated from Chaska High School.

JOHN C. LENZEN, Class of 1961

A three sport athlete at Chaska High School, John has actively supported Chaska Activities & Athletics since his graduation in 1961. He has sponsored both cable broadcasts of Hawk games and a "Coaches Roundtable" radio program featuring Hawk coaches and players. For 30 years he has sponsored Hawk football programs and Homecoming celebrations. Some programs that have benefited from John's generous financial support include Hawk hockey, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, FFA and band. IVAN GRIMM, Class of 1956

Ivan Grimm, a 6'8" basketball standout, holds the Chaska High School record for points per game average at 26.3 points. In his senior year he scored 48 and 49 points in two conference games. Ivan was All-Conference his junior and senior years and team captain for the Hawks. At Carleton College, Ivan set conference and college records and was inducted into the Carleton College Hall of Fame in 1981. After graduation, Ivan was employed by Mobil Oil for 37 years and retired as

president of Mobile Oil Credit Corp Bank. Ivan and his wife Barb have two sons and four grandchildren and live in Overland Park, Kansas.

RICK POPPITZ, Class of 1969

Rick was one of the best all around athletes to ever compete at Chaska High School. Rick began starting on the football team his sophomore year and in his junior and senior years he was named All-Conference. Rick was named to the All-Metro and All-State teams and received honorable mention on the All American Prep team. In basketball he was a three time all conference player, team co-captain and was selected to the All-State team his senior year. In baseball Rick was a four year starter, All-conference for two years, and team co-captain of the Hawks.

STACY CARSKADEN, Class of 1976

A pioneer in female high school athletics, Stacy excelled in volleyball, basketball, and track and field. Her outstanding athletic ability and leadership skills were vitally important in the early days of female sports at Chaska High School. Stacy led the 1975 volleyball team to a third place finish in the State Tournament which began the strong tradition of championship volleyball at Chaska. Stacy was the first Chaska female athlete to win a State Championship, taking first place in the high jump. She still holds the school records for high jump and long jump for the Hawks.

JOHN KINCANNON, Class of 1980

John graduated with high honors from Chaska High School and was a member of the nationally ranked State Champion Debate team. After graduating from Georgetown University, John began a distinguished career as a diplomat in the U.S. Foreign Service. He was Public Affairs Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan during the ouster of the Taliban government. John also served as Consul General at the U.S. Consulate in Saudi Arabia. In 2009, he became head of the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Karbala, Iraq. In 2010 John lead the Provincial Reconstruction Team in Basra, Iraq, coordinating all civilian and reconstruction activities in four of Iraq's southern provinces leading up to the U.S. military pullout from Iraq in 2011.

VERNON K. STEINMETZ

Vern graduated from University of Wisconsin – River Falls where he earned both BS and MS degrees. During his college years at River Falls, he played football and baseball. Following service in the United States Marine Corps, Vern began a teaching career in mathematics at Chaska High School that spanned over 30

years. During that time, Vern was an assistant football coach for four years before becoming the head coach for the next 26 years, winning six conference championships. Vern was also an assistant basketball coach for two years, head basketball coach for one year, Ninth grade coach for several years, head baseball coach for eight years, and head golf coach for 20 years. Vernon and his wife have five children, three of whom graduated from Chaska High School.

JOANN MARIE KLINGLEHUTZ, Class of 1980

Joann left an impressive legacy in her pattern of leadership and creative musical talent. She was a member of the choir for four years, and named to the All State Choir, received State solo and ensemble honors, held lead roles in musicals, and participated in one act and fall drama presentations. Joann was a leader in student council, member of National Honor Society, and Chair of the Winter Snow Days for each of three years. She graduated third in her class and received several academic scholarships. She continued her education at the University of St. Thomas and graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Speech and Theater Arts, and later a Master of Arts in Education. Joann is the proud mother of three children and is presently a soloist for many community events.

JONATHAN C.T. CARLSON, Class of 1993

While a student at Chaska High School, Jonathan excelled in all aspects of academics. He was instrumental in bringing four State Championships to Chaska while competing in Knowledge Bowl, Quiz Bowl and Science Bowl. He led two national appearances in both Quiz Bowl (placing second) and Knowledge Master (placing third). His other awards include letters in band, Nordic skiing and Soccer. After graduation, Jonathan attended Valparaiso University, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a BS and BA (1997). Jonathan has earned a PhD in Chemistry and MD from the University of Minnesota in 2006. He is a Fellow in Hematology/Oncology at the Dana Farber Cancer Institute. Presently, Jonathan is a Physician Scientist at Harvard University, Massachusetts General Hospital. Jonathan and his wife have one son and live in Massachusetts.

AMANDA ROME, Class of 1998

Amanda started playing on the Chaska High School volleyball team as an eighth grader. During her career the team won three state titles. She was a four time All-State, All-Conference and All-Metro Player. In 1996, the Minneapolis Star Tribune selected Amanda as one of the top five high school athletes in the state. She was named the Gatorade Player of the Year and High School All-American by Volleyball Magazine. After graduation, Amanda attended Penn State University on a volleyball scholarship. While at Penn State, the volleyball team won two Big 10 Championships as well as the 1999 National Championship. She was an Academic All-American in 1999 and team captain in 2000 and 2001. After graduation from Penn State, Amanda attended Georgetown University Law School, graduating cum laude.

Emily Rome Welter, Class of 1992

One of the most decorated athletes in Chaska history, Emily earned numerous honors not only for her athletic exploits, but for her work in the classroom as well. While at Chaska, Emily earned All-Conference, All-State, and was a member of the 1991 state volleyball championship team. She went on to shine at the University of Delaware in volleyball, leading the team to two North Atlantic Conference titles. Emily was a two-time first team All-NAC player. She finished her career No. 1 all-time at UD in blocks (460). The 1996 UD Outstanding Female Athlete also received the Warner Award as the outstanding woman in the UD graduating class. In 1996, Emily was named the state’s NCAA Woman of the Year. After graduation from Delaware, Emily graduated magna cum laude from law school at the University of Minnesota in 1999.

JAKE AND LILLIAN COOPER

The Cooper family has been a strong supporter of Chaska schools for decades. Both graduates of Chaska High, Jake and Lil Cooper made education an integral part of their lives. Both lifelong residents of Chaska, they were active members of the community. They were instrumental in establishing educational opportunities for developmentally challenged children. Each year, deserving Chaska High School students received scholarships courtesy of the Cooper family. Jake and Lil respected teachers and showed their support during the 1984 teachers strike by providing food and credit to teachers and their families. Thousands of dollars have been donated by the family to both public and private schools through the ‘Dollars

GARY AND SANDY COOPER

A Chaska High School graduate Gary Cooper and his wife Sandy continue the Cooper family commitment to our school system both personally and professionally through their grocery business, Cooper’s. CHS students who have been involved in the arts, activities, or athletics have all benefited from the generosity of the Cooper family. Thousands of dollars have been donated to both public and private schools in the area through the ‘Dollars for Scholars’ program. The Cooper’s donation to the Chaska Community Center enabled many families to join the Center. For five years, Gary and Sandy ran a group home for teenagers. All of the children attended Chaska High School and achieved levels of success never before accomplished. Gary and Sandy make education a priority in their lives and in the lives of their family.

DALE WELTER

Dale served as the Hawks varsity baseball coach from 1981 - 2008. During his tenure at Chaska High, his teams won 341 games, earned four state tournament appearances, and won five conference titles. More than 50 former players went on to play collegiate baseball, 10 playing at the Division I level and three professionally. Coach Welter has had 16 former players participate in the high school Lion’s All- Star Game, a game Dale coached in 1986. Dale has earned the Dick Seibert Award for outstanding contributions to the game and he was inducted into the Minnesota High School Baseball Coaches Hall-of-Fame and the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Hall-of-Fame. More than teaching the skills of baseball, Dale has dedicated his life to teaching young ball players to be better people who can make significant contributions to society.

BRAD GULDEN, Class of 1975

Brad was a three sport star athlete for the Hawks from 1971 to 1975. In football he earned All-Conference and All-State honors and lead his team to the state championship game in 1974. As a basketball player, Brad was All-Conference both his junior and senior years. However, his real love was baseball. As a varsity player for six years, he earned All-Conference all four of his high school years. He was the conference batting champion for three straight seasons and the team won the conference title all three years. As a pitcher, he never lost a game. That’s one of many team records Brad holds. Upon graduation, Brad was drafted by the Los

Angeles Dodgers and went on to play 14 years with six major league teams. He was a part of the 1979 championship Dodger team and went on to become the starting catcher for the New York Yankees.

JANET FORNER BOSCH, Class of 1981

Janet Forner was an active student at Chaska High School with leadership positions on the National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America. She capped her career at CHS as senior class president. Janet was dance captain in two spring musicals as well as the winner of both the American Legion Leadership Award and the Henry T. McKnight Memorial scholarship. Janet's focus on her work in 4-H and FFA led to leadership positions at the local, district, and state levels during her high school and college career. Janet attended the University of Minnesota, Waseca, to study agricultural communications. In 1982 she was named Princess Kay of the Milky Way. Janet attended the UM St. Paul campus and graduated with a degree in Animal Science in 1985. After graduation, Janet worked in communications at the American Breeder's Service. She received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of Minnesota’s College of Agriculture, Food and Environmental Services in 2001.

JEFFREY SIEGFRIED, Class of 1993

Jeff Siegfried earned many honors while attending Chaska High School. He was a member of both the Knowledge Bowl and Quiz Bowl teams which were state champions in 1992. In Jeff’s senior year, the Quiz Bowl team repeated as state champions and finished second in Nationals. Jeff was active in Student Council, Amnesty International and as a senior class officer. In 1993, he graduated from CHS with honors; he graduated in 1997 from American University in Washington D.C., magna cum laude. He was named Phi Beta Kappa in his senior year. After extensive study and travel to more than 60 countries, Jeff is fluent in Thai, Japanese, Spanish, Russian and Mandarin Chinese. He is currently Director of the English Department, Thai-Japanese Technology Promotion Association, Bangkok, Thailand.

ARLENE BORNER

Arlene served as the Chaska High School Student Council Advisor from 1996-2011. Over those 15 years, Arlene worked with Student Council Executive Boards to provide student involvement and leadership opportunities for CHS students. Old traditions were strengthened and new traditions were started, including Homecoming Week activities, Winterfest, Turkey Bingo, Daddy Daughter Dance, Student Leadership Groups, Sweetheart's Week and countless other student-initiated events. Arlene provided guidance for the development of the council leadership structure and a handbook to ensure organization and consistency for effective student leadership. Arlene's passion and commitment was for the growth and development of student leaders - believing that all students had something to contribute.

SCOTT STALLMAN

Scott served as a Chaska High School coach from 1975-2011; 36 years with cross country and track & field, and 14 seasons with hockey. While coaching the Hawks, CHS captured 3 conference and 4 section titles with 10 individual State Champions in cross country and track, with 103 athletes earning All-State individual recognition. Chaska Cross Country teams qualified for 5 State Championships and were represented in 19 state meets. Chaska Track & Field teams competed in the state meet 33 times during Stallman’s tenure. As a coach of the hockey program in its earliest year, Scott is very proud to have built a strong foundation for the program. His coaching objective was to teach and challenge young people, and allow their athletic experiences to help them grow and to serve them for a lifetime. CURT T. KOTSONAS, Class of 1989

Curt participated in cross country, hockey and track & field. By the time he graduated he had earned 13 varsity letters, 6 in cross country, 4 in track & field and 3 in hockey. He won All-Conference honors in all 3 sports, All-State honors in cross country, and was a captain for both cross country and track & field. After graduation he was a walk-on at the University of Minnesota for cross country and track & field. As a Gopher, he made the All-Big Ten team in track & field, competed at the NCAA Division-I Cross Country championships and earned a scholarship. He was named the 1996 Minnesota Male Distance Runner of the Year.

SAM SATHER, Class of 1999

Sam Sather excelled at many activities while at Chaska High School. He was in choir, band, jazz band, theater, orchestra (Minnesota Youth Symphonies) and lettered in hockey, football and golf throughout his high school career. He was named to the All-State Orchestra (violin), All-State Choir, and was an alternate for the All-State Jazz Band (trombone). After graduation, he attended Lawrence University on scholarships for both violin and voice and played collegiate hockey and golf. He won the WCDA collegiate conducting competition as a senior at Lawrence University. Upon receiving his Bachelors of Music, he began teaching music at Jonathan Elementary and coaching the JV hockey team for Chaska and Chanhassen. Sam sings with the Great Northern Union chorus and has received two silver medals and two bronze medals with the chorus through the international barbershop harmony competition. Sam currently lives in our school district with his wife, Sarah and their two children, Greta and Bennett.

SHANNON OLSON, Class of 1985

Shannon Olson graduated from St. Olaf College in 1989 with a BA in French Literature and went on to earn an MFA in Creative Writing at the University of Minnesota. She is the author of two bestselling novels, Welcome to My Planet: Where English Is Sometimes Spoken (Viking/Penguin 2000) and Children of God Go Bowling (Viking/Penguin 2004), and has written articles and reviews for The Guardian (London), InStyle, Good Housekeeping, the Star Tribune, the Pioneer Press, and Minnesota Monthly. Shannon has taught writing at the University of Minnesota, Colorado College, and for the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival. She is currently an Associate Professor of English at St. Cloud State University. KAREN RYAN, Class of 1987

This 1987 CHS Outstanding Female Athlete was a member of the inaugural CHS Girls’ Soccer team in 1982 (8th grade) and was the first ever All-State Soccer player for CHS (1986). She ran undefeated in Conference, Sectional and Regional Track competition in the 200m and 400m all four years of her high school career. She was a State Champion in the 200m in 1985, and a top 3 finisher every other year. She was also a 3-time All-State 400m runner. Karen ran at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and was Academic All-Big Ten (1989). She earned a BA in Journalism and an MS in Business and has worked 20+ years at executive levels for two of the world’s largest advertising agencies. An Ironman triathlete and marathoner, Karen lives in Mound with her husband and daughter.

Cari Meister Kust (Distinguished Alumni), Class of 1991

Cari graduated Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Alpha Theta, magna cum laude from Clark University in 1995 with a BA in History. While at Clark, Cari earned several academic awards including the Hazel Hughes Award for outstanding undergraduate work for her original historical research and writing on Jennie Clough Busby, Worcester, Massachusetts’ first African American school teacher. Cari is the author of over 120 children’s books, including the bestselling “Tiny” series. She has received numerous accolades for her books, including New Jersey’s Garden State Children’s Book Award in 2003 for Tiny Goes to the Library. Her book, Airplane Adventure, was named a “Best Book of 2010” by Parents magazine. She loves visiting schools and libraries around the country, talking about the joy of reading and writing and the power of the imagination. Cari and her husband John live in Evergreen, Colorado with their four boys.

Rachael (Schmieg) Hovey (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1998

Rachael was a two sport athlete in volleyball and basketball. In volleyball, she was All-State, 2-time All-Metro, 2-time All-Conference, Kare 11 Player of the Week, and a 2-time member of the State All-Tournament Team. Rachael was also a part of first, second, and third place state tournament teams. As an All-Metro Selection and 3-time All-Conference basketball player, Rachael was a member of the State All-Tournament Team and the MN High School All-Star Team. She helped her team finish second at State her senior year and was a member of the 1,000 point club. As her high school career came to a close, Rachael received the CHS Outstanding Senior Female Athlete Award. Upon graduation, she accepted a volleyball scholarship to North Dakota State University where she was second team All-American, All-Region, 3-time All-Conference, and finished her career with over 1,000 digs and 1,000 kills. She was a part of three conference championship teams, four regional tournament appearances, and two Elite Eight tournaments. Currently, Rachael teaches second grade in White Bear Lake and lives in St. Paul with her husband Mike and their two children, Mckinley and Rosalyn.

Dan Pelowski (Outstanding Coach) Dan enjoyed 38 years as a teacher/technology coordinator, 30 seasons as a basketball coach and 23 seasons as a tennis coach at Chaska High School. His players learned the value of hard work to improve, teamwork, respect for others

Coach Pelowski was named 2004 Coach of the Year for 4A, Section 2AAAA, and the Lake Conference. Dan was part of 12 conference, 6 section, and 1 state title. He was instrumental in our Youth Basketball Association. Dan and his wife Jean live in Chaska

Brady Borner (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1997

Brady was a two sport athlete in baseball and hockey at Chaska High School. He was a 3-time letter winner in both sports but excelled in baseball. In both his junior and senior seasons, he was selected All-Conference, All-Region and All-State. As a senior, he and his teammates were Section Champions and State Tournament participants. Following High School, Brady put together a Hall of Fame career at Wayne State College in Nebraska where he set, and currently holds numerous school, conference and Division II pitching records. He finished his baseball career playing 5 ½ seasons in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization compiling a 35-15 record with a 4.15 ERA. Brady currently lives in Omaha, NE with his wife Carrie and two children, Drew and Anna.

Nathan Pelowski (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1994

Nathan was a three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. He lettered two times in football, four times in basketball, two times in baseball and two times in National Honor Society. In basketball he was All-Conference three times, All-Metro two times, and All-State two times. Nathan was selected to the MN State High School Basketball All Star Team once, is a member of two State Basketball Teams from 1992 and 1993, is a member of the 1000 point club and was a finalist for MN Mr. Basketball in 1994. In baseball he was All-Conference once and also a member of the 1993 State Tournament team. Upon graduation he accepted a basketball scholarship to St. Cloud State University where he played four years while majoring in Mathematics and Statistics. Nathan came back to Chaska where he coached boys’ basketball at CHS for many years including the 2004 State Title Team. He currently teaches math for Eastern Carver County Schools and resides in Carver with his wife and two wonderful children.

Mindy Hansen (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1995

Mindy earned 13 letters in soccer, basketball and softball. She held numerous All-conference and All-State accolades in each sport, participating in several All-Star games and tournaments. Hansen went on to be a four-year letter winner for the

University of Minnesota’s Women’s Basketball team. After Big Ten basketball, Mindy started a business training athletes and developing various teams. She obtained a Master’s degree in exercise physiology at St. Cloud State University where she also trained several of the Division II teams. That ultimately led to medical school where Hansen will be practicing sports and neuromuscular medicine.

Gregg Robert Schneider (Outstanding Athlete & Coach), Class of 1967

Gregg was a 4 sport athlete in football, basketball, track and baseball. In football, he was a 3 year starter, awarded All-Conference twice and “WCCO All-State Team of the Week” twice. After Chaska’s 1966 undefeated season, he was named to the Minnesota All-State football Team and the High School All-American Team Honorable Mention. He was also named co-captain and was the conference co-leader in scoring. Upon graduation, he received a 4 year football scholarship to the University of Minnesota, Duluth, where he lettered 3 times. Gregg taught in District 112 for 35 years and coached football for 32 years, 13 years as head coach. He was selected to coach the 1992 Minnesota High School All-Star Metro Football Team. He has also been an assistant golf coach at Chaska High School for the last 24 years. In total, Gregg has coached in District 112 for 42 years. Gregg lives in Chaska with his wife, Sharon.

Induction Class of 2015

Jason Haaheim (Outstanding Arts & Activities), Class of 1997

While a student at Chaska High School, Jason excelled in many activities. He was a member of the 1997 State Champion knowledge bowl team and participated in quiz bowl, nordic skiing and tennis. He played percussion in virtually every music ensemble – wind ensemble, jazz band, percussion ensemble, pep band, marching band, pit orchestra – and won multiple superior ratings and “best in site” awards at solo/ensemble competitions. He also won positions in the All-State Orchestra and the Greater Twin Cities’ Youth Symphony. Jason attended Gustavus Adolphus College on music and academic scholarships, received a B.A. in physics and honors music (2001), graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa, and won both the concerto competition and the honors recital. He subsequently attended UC-Santa Barbara on fellowship, auditioned into the Aspen Music Festival along the way, and earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering (2003). From 2003 to 2013, he worked as a senior scientist at a Chicago-based nanotechnology company, during

which time he also won the position of Principal Timpanist with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. In 2013, Jason was appointed Principal Timpanist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In addition to performances at Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall, Jason can be heard with the MET Orchestra on radio, television, and HD movie simulcasts.

Bob Tadsen (Outstanding Coach) Bob graduated from St. Cloud. He earned his Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota. Following service in the United State Army, Bob began a teaching career in physical education at Chaska High School. He served as the Athletic Director at Chaska High School from 1960-1968. He was an assistant football and basketball coach and was the Chaska boys head basketball coach from 1968 – 1975. Bob started Chaska’s first official boys Track & Field program in 1960 and started Chaska’s boys Cross Country program. He was responsible for starting the Chaska Invitational cross country meet that we have hosted for more than 5 years. It was Bob's idea and desire to involve boys in these running activities that has led to the successful legacy of cross country and track that we enjoy today at Chaska High School.

Dianne Prieditis (Outstanding Contributor) Over the years, Dianne has volunteered within the Eastern Carver County School District in a variety of ways. As a parent and community member, she has helped in the classroom and offered her time and energy on various referendums and committees. Beyond these important efforts, Dianne has exhibited an exemplary commitment to music and the arts on behalf of the District 112 community. Throughout the past four decades, she has accompanied many students, vocal groups and school choirs, whether they were performing for concerts, regional or state competitions, and even Homecoming and Winterfest coronations. She also proudly led the charge to raise the necessary funds for the purchase of a beautiful grand piano for the "new" Chaska High School when it was built several years ago. Dianne has provided music instruction to countless students over the past 42 years through her independent studio and continues to teach and serve the community joyfully with her gift of music.

John Born (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1989

While at Chaska, John earned seven athletic letters -- two in football, two in basketball, and three in baseball. John was elected team captain in football, basketball, and baseball while earning All-Conference honors in all three sports. In

1989, he won the Al Mooney award for Best Male Athlete at Chaska High School. He was a member of the National Honor Society and was selected to attend Boy’s State. He went on to play baseball at St. Olaf College, helping the team to two conference titles his junior and senior seasons. John lettered three times at St. Olaf while earning two All-Conference awards and two All-Region honors. He was captain of the baseball team his senior year setting a fielding record at first base (998%), committing only one error in over 500 chances. John is currently employed at Oak Grove Middle School where he received the 2006 Bloomington Instructor/Coach of the year. John currently lives in Chaska with his wife, Gina, and two children, Mac and Joseph.

Debbie (Vogel) Kerber (Outstanding Athlete) Class of 1976

Debbie was a three-sport athlete in volleyball, basketball, track and field and badminton. She was a three-time letter winner in volleyball, two-time letter winner in basketball, and one-time letter winner in track and field and badminton. In volleyball, she was a co-captain and earned All-Conference her senior year. During her senior year, she played on the Chaska High School volleyball team that finished in 3rd place at the State Tournament. In basketball, she was a co-captain and earned All-Conference her senior year. As her high school career came to a close, she did not continue on to college but continued to play intramural women’s and co-rec volleyball and women’s softball for many years. She also kept score and line judged for Chaska High School. She is still a strong supporter and fan of the Chaska High School program. Currently she works at Entegris Inc. in Chaska as a Customer Service Representative. Debbie resides in Carver, MN with her husband, Joe. They have 3 children, Tim, Tracy and Terry.

Ryan Seifert (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1994

Ryan was a two-sport athlete in baseball and basketball at Chaska High School and lettered three times in each sport. He was a member of the 1992 and 1993 State Tournament basketball teams and was named All-Conference his senior season. Ryan excelled in baseball where he was named All-Conference and All-Metro both his junior and senior seasons. He was selected All-State his senior year and a member of the 1993 State Tournament team. Upon graduation, Ryan earned a baseball scholarship to Iowa State University where he was a three-year letter winner and named Academic All-Conference three times. In 1996 he was selected to play in the prestigious Alaskan Summer League where he was named Pitcher of the Year. Following his junior season at ISU, Ryan was drafted by the Colorado Rockies Organization in the 12th round. He went on to play six seasons in the

Rockies Organization and advanced up to the Triple A level before retiring from professional baseball. Ryan pitched in 163 career games, tallied 413 strikeouts to just 184 walks and had a career 4.44 ERA. Ryan currently lives in Chaska with his wife, Tara, and sons, Jack and Owen.

Mary (Theis) West (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1976

Mary was a three-sport high school athlete in volleyball, badminton and track. She received several All-Conference accolades and team co-captain honors. Athletics played a significant role for Mary by providing the drive to pursue her higher education while continuing to compete in sports. Mary received both academic and athletic scholarships from Normandale College and the University of Montana (Butte) while graduating magna cum laude in Sales & Marketing and Computer Science respectively. At Normandale, she competed in both volleyball and softball and received awards as team co-captain, All-Conference, Most Valuable Player and Athlete of the Year. At Montana, Mary was an All-Conference volleyball player and served as team co-captain and President of the Women’s’ Athletic Club. She continued to be involved in sports after college and served on several sport club boards of directors. Mary and her husband of 30 years, Art, have two children, Preston and Karlee.

Spencer Richard Tollackson (Outstanding Athlete) Class of 2004

Spencer Tollackson, class of 2004, was a two-sport athlete, earning All-Conferencehonors in both Basketball and Baseball his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He was All-State his junior and senior years in Basketball. He finished his senior season by leading the Chaska Hawks to a 30-2 record and the Minnesota State AAAA Championship. Following the season, Tollackson was named the 2004 Minnesota Mr. Basketball, the Gatorade State Player of the Year, the Associated Press State Player of the Year, as well as the Metro Player of the Year by the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The 6-foot-9 player also became the all-time leading scorer in Chaska High School and Lake Conference history with 1,868 points. He averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds his senior year. Tollackson went to the University of Minnesota as one of the most heralded recruits in the nation. He played in 119 career games in a Minnesota uniform, amassed 935 career points and 438 rebounds. As a senior, Tollackson was named a tri-captain and helped lead Tubby Smith's first Gopher squad to a 20-14 record.

Tollackson finished his collegiate career in sixth place on the Golden Gophers’ all-time field goal percentage list at .525 (.390-.743). Spencer sells computer software for eCapital Advisors and also works for the University of Minnesota as the color commentator for the Gopher Men’s Basketball team and hosts a Saturday morning radio show on 1500 ESPN. He lives in Eden Prairie, with his wife Brie Tollackson. The couple is expecting their first child the fall of 2016.

Lisa Hilgers Brueggemeier (Outstanding Athlete), Class of 1995

Lisa was a four year letter winner for the Chaska High School Volleyball team and was part of three State Championships (’91, ’93, ’94). During her high school volleyball career she received All-Tournament, All-State, All-Metro and All-Conference honors. After graduation Lisa attended Texas Tech University on a Volleyball scholarship from 1995-2000. While at Texas Tech, she earned a double major in Accounting and General Business. Lisa earned First Team All-Big 12, Big 12 Player of the Week, Honorable Mention All-Big 12, and AVCA All-Region District 5 during her collegiate career. She holds several single season assists and digs records and was named to the Texas Tech All-Millennium Team. In 2013 she was inducted into the Texas Tech Hall of Fame. Lisa currently resides in Waconia with her husband Brandon and two children.

Julie Plocher Mattson (Arts & Activities) Class of 1986

Julie performed in both musicals and plays during her years at Chaska High School. She was awarded the Chaska Civic Theater Scholarship. She was also a member of both band and marching band, receiving a “superior” rating at state band competition. Julie performed on the color guard for marching band and was also a member of CHS choir and pop choir. Julie was a four-year member of student council (served as secretary her junior and senior years). She also served on executive board of Minnesota State Association of Student Council and received the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Award. She served as class officer for four years on National Honor Society. Julie was a member of the first Girls’ Soccer team at Chaska High School where she served as captain in both her junior and senior years. She was also a member of the Girls’ Basketball team during her freshman, sophomore and junior years. She earned a degree in History and married classmate Kevin Mattson and is the proud mother of three children.

Jim Hansel (Outstanding Contributor) Class of 1979

Jim was a Track and Cross Country athlete all four years at Chaska High School, serving as co-captain his senior year, this six-time letter winner went to regions in the mile run event. Jim also excelled in art classes and sold his first oil painting while at Chaska High School. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. After graduation, Jim began building his art business, Jim Hansel Editions, becoming one of Minnesota’s premier nature and landscape artists. His reputation for colorful landscapes is very popular with art collectors worldwide. Jim has been commissioned to produce paintings featured by conservation groups and has donated time and art to many philanthropic organizations. With multiple awards to his credit, Jim has been the subject of documentaries and appearances on television. Jim lives in Chaska with his wife Lois (Bongard) CHS class of ‘80. They have two children, both CHS graduates, Joe ’06 and Laura ‘08.

Chad and Miriam Junker (Outstanding Advisor – Director) Chad and Miriam Junker were both music teachers at Chaska High School for many years. Chad (vocal) began teaching at Chaska in 1979 and retired in 2003. During those years, he served as Vocal Director for musicals and Director of Pep Choir. His choirs earned numerous Superior ratings at Region Music Contests. In addition, Chad directed church choirs at the Basilica of St. Mary in Minneapolis, Mount Calvary Lutheran in Excelsior, and is currently Director of the Hand-bell Choir at Colonial Church in Edina. Mariam (instrumental) began teaching at Chaska High School in 1975 and retired in 2007. During these years, she served as a Director of Pep Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band, and Pit Orchestra for Musicals. Her Wind Ensemble earned Superior ratings at every Region band contest for over 20 years. In addition, Miriam was selected for Who’s Who in American Education in 1989 and 1990, Who’s Who among American Teachers in 2000, and Who’s Who of American Women in 2006 and 2007. Miriam led band trips to the World’s Fair in Knoxville, New Orleans, and Vancouver in 1982, 1984 and 1986, respectively; and to Orlando in 1990.

While at Chaska High School, Chad and Miriam led band and choir trips to San Diego, Germany, Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Poland and Hungary. They continue to serve the community as volunteers at Minneapolis Children’s Hospital every week. They have two children, Jonathon and Alexis, who attended Chaska High School and were very active in both music groups and athletics.
