Faith Formation Tentative 2018-19 Schedule

Jan 13, 17th

Sunday, Jan. 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord Is 42:14, 67 / Acts 10:3438 / Lk 3:1516, 2122

Think of what it's like to wait a long time. Can you imagine what it would be like to wait for centuries? No one person lives that long, of course. But for the Israelites, they had heard the stories from genera-tion to generation. They had been conquered time and time again, and now "the people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ." They had been waiting for a Messiah, one who did miraculous deeds and said pro-found things; someone aglow with the glory of God. We all know what it's like to hope and be disappointed. But what if your hopes were fulfilled? That day at the Jordan River, an audience had gath-ered. Among the crowd for baptism was an unknown man. Perhaps he was dirty from weeks in the desert. His hands had the calloused palms of a tradesman, a carpenter. He and John the Baptist may have embraced with the familiarity of the cousins they were. This man wades into the Jordan for a good, solid dunking. As he rises from the water, the One who breathed life into Adam gasps for air like any other man. But then "heaven was opened." The clouds in the sky part miles above. "And the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove." An apparition with substance sails through the sky. It exudes gentleness and power all at once. "And a voice came from heaven, 'You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.' " Can you imagine the sight? For the crowd, there is no doubting what they have seen, who they have seen. Can you imag-ine this encounter with our God who keeps His promises? What are you waiting for?

Day of Prayer for Legal Protection of Unborn Children

January 22nd Day of Prayer and Fasting The over 56 million abor-tions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s provi-dence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States, January 22 shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guaran-tee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individu-als, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practic-es of prayer and fasting. Another way to take part is participating in special events to observe the anniversary of Roe v. Wade. If you are unable to participate physically, please pray for those who are traveling to Washington DC to March for Life. Thank you for your prayers.

Health Precautions

Many have expressed concern over two aspects of our Liturgy, especially now that flu season is here. First, the Sign of Peace: please do not be offended if someone

near you decides to extend the sign of peace verbally and not by taking your hand: and second, Receiving from the Chalice: if you are not feeling well, please refrain from receiving the Blood of Christ until you are feeling better. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation. Stay healthy and holy!

Respect Life Collection

The weekend of January 26/27 is the annual Respect Life Collec-tion. Last year twenty-one grants were awarded which benefited those working to build a Culture of Life in our diocese. It's important with this year's legislative climate that we provide alternatives to abortion and help to educate the next generation. The collection provided funds for 7 Gabriel Projects, Plattsburgh Crisis Pregnancy Center, Birthright, Right to Life affiliates, 4 pilgrimages to the DC March for Life (two high school, one college and one family bus), 3 Pro-Life County Fair Booths as well as other prolife efforts. Grant applications are online at the Respect Life Office website: www.rcdony.org/prolife/respectlifegrant.html. The deadline for this year's application is February 28th. Thank you for your generosity.

Spaghetti Dinner at St. George.

April 28th after Sunday Mass. 11 am to 2 pm.

Virtus Training Anyone in the parish working or volunteering with children must have a background check and virtus training. The next sessions of virtus training are: January 16th at 3:30 p.m. at St. James School in Gouverneur and January 24th at 7:30 p.m. at Wakefield Recital Hall, SUNY Potsdam. If you would like to attend either of these sessions, you must preregister. Go to the Safe Environment Office site on the Diocesan Website (rcdony.org) and follow the directions.

From Deacon Brian It was so nice last weekend to see many different faces at all three of our worship sites. As we continue to welcome our sisters & broth-ers from our neighboring faith communities, let us extend warm & generous hospitality. As we share in our oneness in Christ. It was also nice to see CCBC envelopes coming from different churches as well. Keep it up!! I will be away for a few days later in the week , as I attend the March for Life in Washington D.C with my son Stephen & wife Monique along with a hundred other youth & chaperones from the Diocese. Please pray for our safe travel and for all the precious life in the womb, that our laws may protect all life from the womb to the tomb. A Blessed week to all!!
