Class of 2017 The Class of 2017 were well led by College Captain, Joseph Unwin as they embraced the 2017 theme of Gospel Spirituality.

The young men led the College in a variety of areas: academic, spiritual, sport and outdoor education, music, drama, arts, robotics, debating, social justice, service and student wellbeing initiatives.

They made a very worthwhile contribution to the heritage and life of the College, and we wish them every success for the future. They will be proud ambassadors for the College in the future.

Many people contributed to the success of the year. The College teaching and administrative staff have ably supported the boys throughout their years at the College. Of course great credit should also be given to the families whose support of the Class of 2017 contributed so much to making them fine young men. I am confident that our Year 12 Graduates will go forward in their lives and make a positive contribution to our world.

What I enjoyed most about my time at Pius were the friendships I built up over the years with not just my peers but also teachers. These connections created a positive learning environment at school which allowed me to reach my academic potential.

St Pius provided me with someone to talk to whenever times got tough and the pressure was on. The whole college community had my back and supported me with vigour, something I owe a lot of my academic success to. The college also offered numerous opportunities for co-curricular activity which was a chance to break away from the books for a brief time while also encouraging my own personal development into a young adult.

My tips for getting excellent results and managing the HSC are to begin a routine early, where your time is allocated based on your strengths and weakness. Focus more time on those subjects you find most difficult. Create a formal timetable where each hour of the day is spent achieving certain goals that will contribute to even bigger goals and milestones.

My best memory was the Yr10 immersion to Bowraville where I immersed myself in Aboriginal culture while also gaining a greater understanding of the challenges facing Aboriginal communities. The experience was transformative and inspired my current work with Edmund Rice Camps Australia.

My advice for younger students is to choose subjects you enjoy. I had a choice of dropping General Maths (where I was a Band 6) or French Continuers (where I was averaging a Band 5). Despite my results, I was highly passionate about French and decided to drop Maths. I actually found studying for French enjoyable and was therefore motivated to continue to work hard in order to improve, culminating in a Band 6 result.

For success in the HSC, I recommend developing thorough research. The top-range essays are the ones that demonstrate a deep and sophisticated understanding of the set question and this is not achieved by gathering information from the first website you come across. Rather, I recommend signing up for the NSW State Library where you can gain online access to thousands of scholarly articles which provide detailed analysis and discussion, particularly relevant to writing English essays.

Pius allowed me to create a myriad of unforgettable memories with the lifelong friends I forged, and also to accomplish many extraordinary academic achievements. Pius provided me with the guidance, support and a wealth of opportunities to develop and enhance myself both academically and as a young man, allowing me to firmly establish who I am for a life beyond high school.

My advice for younger students is to establish solid work ethics as early as possible; learn how to avoid procrastination and remove yourself from distractions. The later you leave this essential lesson, the harder it becomes to break bad habits that can significantly affect your performance in anything you do. Another piece of advice is to take every opportunity you can so that you may enjoy your time at high school to the fullest and avoid regretting the opportunities you let slide.

My tips for getting good results are to aim high, develop solid work ethics and allow nothing to stop you from achieving your goals. Don’t let people tell you that ‘you can only do your best’ as there is no limit to what one can achieve if they genuinely apply themselves.

What made my time at Pius so enjoyable was my involvement in extracurricular activity. Participation in sports including football and basketball as well as my involvement in music through the Jazz Band, Concert Band and Orchestra allowed me to develop a wider circle of friends and alleviated stress during the HSC year.

My tips for future HSC students are as follows:1. Take time to think when you study, and when you sit an exam, get

your thoughts together and make sure they are clear.

2. Make sure you are constantly self-evaluating your knowledge and skills as a student. Use this process of self-evaluation to assess what you are doing well and how you continue to apply it, as well as identify what you need to improve upon and how you are going to fix it.

Studying a Bachelor of Commerce/Advanced Studies at the University of Sydney.St Pius X provided me with a warm and caring community that allowed me to form friendships that will last a lifetime, whilst teaching me to gain a work ethic and encouraging me to try different things. Whilst I have countless lasting memories from my time at the College, I will forever remember Pius as the place that matured me into who I am, made me a better person than I was, and all the wonderful people that were there to guide me. My greatest memory will always be the journey.

My advice for younger students is to remember that you can always do more work. If you improve your work ethic each year you will leave the college knowing that you can achieve great things. Remember to cherish the company of the people around you because there is no community like the Pius community.

Studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science and Advanced Studies majoring in Physics and Maths at the University of Sydney.

St Pius X has taught me much more than denoted in the syllabus, especially about my character and the world around me. School offered me the opportunity to develop strong friendships and memories that I will carry into my future. It is important to get involved in as many things as you can as all of these experiences open doorways for the future.

My tips of advice for younger students are to:1. Maintain activities and passions outside of school as the balance

they afford will benefit both your studies and your future.

2. Enjoy your time at school as you are most productive when you are enthusiastic.

3. Choose subjects you have a genuine interest in and explore them beyond the syllabus as passion for your subjects will be your most effective motivator for study.

In an environment that stresses the importance of developing a balanced outlook on life, the St Pius College community has abetted the achievement of my goals in Year 12, both in sporting and academia. The 2017 cohort and I certainly valued the opportunities for learning and self-betterment provided at St Pius X College.

My advice for future Year 12s is if you think you’ve done enough work... you haven’t.
