Chatter-Barks Volume 36 / Issue 6 www.ocodb.org June 2018 NEXT MEETING MONDAY June 11, 2018 “General Club Business” Dear members: Chatterbarks took a short vacation while Joan recovered from some health issues but now we’re back. Summertime has arrived and with it, preparations for our July trial have begun. Please sign up to help for a few hours – we have plenty of spots that need to be filled and nothing requires any special skills. Even beginners can help plus you learn so much while watching the competitors. It’s also the season for invasions from sick raccoons. I live in a well populated area of South Daytona and yesterday a raccoon slowly walked up to my gate, unfazed by either me or my barking dog on the other side. He then fell over and had a seizure. When animal control arrived to get him, he said this was the second sick raccoon he had picked up that day – and it was only 9:30 in the morning. Make sure your animals are safe and don’t leave them outside unattended. They depend on us to protect them. And speaking of protection, I have received several notices from AKC about Phishing which involves thieves sending out official looking announcements asking for personal information and/or donations. The notice looks real – the most recent one was distributed to members of the Bull Mastiff club. It can never be said too often – question and look critically at everything you receive via the internet. Criminals are on their toes and we need to be as well. Take care. The notice looks real – the most recent one was distributed to members of the Bull Mastiff club. Note from the Editor

Thank you for all the cards, well wishes, phone calls and emails that I received while I was so sick, they really meant a lot to

me to know I had so many friends thinking about me.. I’m not fully recovered yet but will be doing the newsletter, and

class registration again.

Many Thanks to those that took over for me while I was so sick,

Renee’ Johnson for making sure there were instructors and

assistants for the classes, Cheryl Johnson for taking over the registration. Thank you Karl Shalansky & Maria Orlando for taking the wonderful photos for the Dancing Dog Show. Also, thanks to Walt & Jan Chase for putting together the program for the show, and to Edd Gordon

and Dana Connolly for teaching the Intermediate class that I

wasn’t able to.

Obedience Club of Daytona General Meeting Minutes May 14, 2018

Meeting was called to order by Pat Mozden at 7:00PM.

Sign in sheet was passed around and is attached to hard copy of minutes. 35 members were present and three guests.

Wins and brags were announced and will be posted in Chatterbarks if you send them to Joan. LindaS congratulated all on a fantastic Dancing Dog Show!

Minutes of the last meeting were published in the newsletter and so were not read at the meeting. No additions or corrections were made.

Report of the secretary: New single memberships were Gloria Conrad, Joyce Holmquist would like to help with anything appropriate for her, Melanie Magamoll, Yvonne Presley and Mary Riley would like to work on FCAT. Linda Coyner and Paige Remington would like to help with classes, programs and trials and joined as a family membership.

Report of the Treasurer:

April Expenses: $12,675.62 (Scappichio Seminar was ~$7K and Rent ~$2K)

April Income: $21,563.00 (SW Trials ~$13K and advanced classes ~$2.6K)

Rent was not shown on last month’s P&L statement because it autopays and Kathy has to manually add it to the report.

Report of the Board of Directors:

FAST CAT: We will be hosting a Marion Alachua FAST CAT trial at our January agility trial. Our club will receive $2 per entry from MADTA. They will handle all the logistics including entries.

Online Payments: We will look into doing online payments for future trials.

Class Credits: Instructors will have one week from the end of the last class to turn in the number of hours everyone worked and the assistant’s names to Ralph.

Old Jumps and Push Carts: While making our storage areas neater, we discovered an old J&J PractiJump set that has not been used in years. Bob made the opening bid of $25 and there were no other interested parties. Two push carts that are not being used were offered for free. LindaC took one or two.

Personal Equipment: All personal equipment stored at the building MUST be marked with your name or it will be disposed of if we cannot determine to whom it belongs.

Cleaning Day: The last cleaning day for the first of of 2018 will be on June 2nd starting at noon. To speed things up and/or if you are allergic to some chemicals, you can bring your own pail, rags and cleaner.

Job Distribution: Pat reported that Joan’s illness has shown us that we need to spread out our workload a little more so that any one person is not doing too many critical jobs. This will help us to keep the ball rolling in the event any of us has one of life’s crises that seems to hit us all when we least expect it.

Old Business:

Donations: We received thank you notes from Southeast Volusia County Humane Society and Sophie’s Circle for our $750 each donations.

Debbie Quigley Seminar: has been cancelled due to cancellations and lack of interest.

Crates Left in Building: Reneé reminded us that all crates need to be moved to the back of the building or taken home during trials if the owner is not entered in a trial. Exhibitors have commented that there is not enough crating space. All crates in the building should have owners name on them please. You can store your personal equipment inside them and lock them.

CGC Test: was cancelled due to too few testers and illness. Reneé reminded us that she is not in charge of the testing, only the scheduling of events at the building.

New Business:

Vacuum Cleaner: Claire has fallen in love with a commercial vacuum that has a 30” path, is self propelled, has a 70’ cord and much faster and sturdier than the home vacuums we have been struggling with. JoanC made the motion we purchase it for $2,100 from Burns Supply and Reneé seconded. Discussion included that we check on cost of filters and bags so we are not surprised when we need to purchase them.

Trick Dog Elite: Reneé reported that there is a new Trick Dog title called Elite .

Scent Work Trial: LindaB reported we have a lot of good stewards, but still need a few more in order to spread the workload a little better. It is a good way to learn about scent work and some jobs are sit down jobs. We have three judges this time and each judge needs 3 stewards.

Program: A Dock Diving program was presented by member Gordon Roberts assisted by Cheri and Carrie.

Respectfully Submitted,

Chris Franczek

Want to Feel Good All Over? Be a Steward!

If you’re suffering from a lack of praise and appreciation, you’ll want to seriously consider signing up to steward at

this summer’s OCOD Obedience Trials, Saturday and Sunday, July 14th 15th.

Every year we hear the same kind of praise from those who judge our trials and those who enter:

“Excellent stewards all weekend.” “Really GREAT stewards.”

“We’re spoiled. These are the best stewards we’ve ever had.”

A number of club members turn up each year to work as stewards. They know—as you will, if you’ve never done it before—that

being a steward gets you a ring-side seat, up close and personal, for all the action. Plus lunch and goodies !

If you’re thinking of preparing your dog for obedience performance, there’s no better way to learn the ways of the ring than to steward.

And no experience is needed. We train!

This year, we’ll have three obedience rings each day. Three judges. Novice, Open, Utility, and a few non-standard classes.

We’ll need table stewards to help the judges keep the paperwork in order, and ring stewards to do things like put out scent articles and gloves, take leashes,

deliver dumbbells, set jump heights, and act as posts for the figure-8 exercises. And the main task: to keep the

rings running smoothly and our judges happy.

So if you’d like to give stewarding a try, or come back for another enjoyable experience, please contact

Trial Chair Ralph Orlando at [email protected] or 386-788-4268. Your help will be Greatly Appreciated!
