SCHOOL OFFICE SUMMER HOURS: Beginning in June (throughout the summer), the school office will be open Monday-Thursday, and closed on Friday’s. I will need to be out to run to the bank, post office, lunch, and vacation, so please call first and make sure I am here if you are planning to make a special trip. If you don’t get me, please leave a message or send me an email, and I will get back with you when I return. For your convenience, you may make payments over the phone by calling the office with a credit or debit card, you may mail payments (1104 N. 4th, 74601), set up a date to have payments automatically drafted from your bank account, drop by the office Monday – Thursday, or bring your payment by the cafeteria during the summer lunch hours of 11-12:30 Monday – Fridays. Be sure to stick around and have the kids eat lunch while you are here; 18 years and under eat free!

SUMMER SKILLS WORKBOOKS: The deadline for ordering Summer Skills Workbooks has

been extended to Thursday, May 12. If you would like to order a booklet or two, please stop by the office. Studies show that much of what is learned during the school year is lost over the summer months. Summer Skills Review Books provide students with a review of materials taught the previous year, and can give them an academic edge and self-confidence when they return to school in the fall. Workbooks available include math and language arts for students in grades PK-7th, Spanish 1 & 2 review, French 1 review, and pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, and high school math books. They even offer “Math for Life” books, if you want to brush up on your own skills! If you would like to see an example, or would like to order a workbook(s), stop by the school office or visit the website www.summerskills.com. They are $21 each, and orders are due to the school office by May 6.

MAGNETS: Have you seen the new First Lutheran Church & School magnet on cars in the parking lot yet? To get your own, stop by the office. They are $5 each, or 3 for $10.

SUMMER DAY CAMP is now full and has started a wait-list. Please contact the school or daycare office if you would like to be placed on the wait-list.

GYM WALL IMPROVEMENTS PROJECT. Tired of seeing the old blue wall tile in the gym? A project is being started to improve the aesthetics of our gym walls. We are open to any ideas including painting, removing the blue tiles, putting up Cardinal-themed wall mats, changing the colors to Cardinal colors (red, black, white), changing the tile on the outside of the gym in the entrance way, etc. All of these ideas have

Page 3: Chatter 5 11 16

different costs associated with them depending on which options are selected. If you feel called to make a donation to this project, please contact the school office. Your donation would be tax deductible. For questions or suggestions, contact Principal Birnbaum, Bruce Fuller (Property Chairman), or Tim Burden (School Board President).

GYM RESTROOM REMODEL - We are beginning the fundraising process to remodel the School gym restrooms. We would like to convert the two small restrooms on the South into one large girl’s restroom and the other two on the North to Boys only. The expected cost is $125,000. $7,500 has been given and will be matched by Phillips 66. If you, or a person or business you know could contribute, we would greatly appreciate it. (These are tax-deductible gifts.)

CAMPBELL’S SOUP LABELS FOR EDUCATION PROGRAM IS ENDING…We have until the end of this school year to finish collecting labels and get them sent in before the program is discontinued. If you have any Labels for Education, please cut off the rectangle like the picture to the right, and send it to school with your student. We can use these labels to purchase p.e./recess/classroom supplies for our school!

WHISPER, WHISPER" is a new 32 page picture book that was written by a pastor's wife in Blackwell. It is written to help 1 to 4 year old children participate quietly in church services. To view or order this book for $7.99, go to cph.org/marymoerbe.

PRINCIPAL - Mr. Birnbaum: Short & Sweet - "In Christ, you're NEVER alone: not in poverty or richness, not in sickness or health, not even when death parts you."

We will soon be parting for the Summer and moving into new adventures but I pray that you will have a Blessed Summer and continue to GROW in the grace and knowledge of our Lord.

Friday we will be going to the Lost Creek Safari, we will be leaving the school at 9:00am, please look in backpacks for more details. Next week we will be making an "ABC Book". Last Day of school is Friday May 20th with a noon dismissal. Hope you all have an amazing summer!!!

KINDERGARTEN – Mrs. Miller: Wow, this is the last Chatter from the teachers, so I would like to thank all the parents for sharing their children with me this year. I love them all! This group/class of children are very special! Please keep working over the summer on your child's reading ability by practice, practice, practice. You can re-read all our books, Dr Seuss's books, and library books! On the last day May 20th we will only have a half day of school. Your child's report card will be ready at the office on Friday the 27th. I will miss your kids. Please have a marvelous summer!

Laughlin who kept the boys in line all day! Our last memory work for the year is the 10th Commandment. I have had a few students say it to me already. Keep working on it at home! Our field trip to the library and Pizza Inn is on Friday. We will plan to leave around 9:45. Happy birthday to Wesley on the 15th, Reese on the 17th, and to Kylie on July 10th. Please see the note in the Chatter about our last day of school picnic. I pray that you all have a great summer. Keep reading with your child and work on all those math facts that we learned this year. Thank you for sharing your child with me this year and for everything that you have done for me. God's blessings!

SECOND GRADE – Mrs. Powell: Happy Summer! These amazing children are ready for third grade. Be sure to spend lots of time reading and having fun. We will celebrate our AR success for this quarter with a movie at the Poncan. Watch for a special note regarding time and travel. Happy summer birthday to Trenton and London Lynn. God's Blessings, dear friends. Thank you so much for sharing your precious children with me this year. I've learned so much from them. I pray that your summer is safe and memorable! Blessings!

THIRD GRADE - Mrs. Steichen: Way to go everyone!! I am so proud of each of you and how you did at the track meet last week. Only 2 more weeks left, we can do this! 1 Parents please check your child's grades. We do not have very much left, so please encourage your child to ask me questions, take their time, and bring things home to be checked. This week: Story: Statue of Liberty - test on Thursday, paragraph tonight. Math, Science, and Social Studies tests next week. Spelling and Memory this Friday; please look in your child's planner for each of these. Book Report: A paper regarding the wax museum went home the other day, we hope to see each of you there. Also, please bring everything to school with you and ready to go. We will do reports in class, then meet up to do the museum part. Please let me know if you have any questions. God's Blessings!!

FOURTH GRADE - Mrs. Sibley: What great talent that we have here in the 4th grade. God has given us amazing gifts both academically and athletically. The kids are really excited about the auction items that they have seen so far. Keep the auction items coming into school. Don’t forget about field trip report due on Thursday. There will be no spelling next week; we will have memory, and a test over the west region. Look in the Friday Letter for Memory and other information. Blessings to you as we wrap up the school year strong and prepare to be 5th graders.

FIFTH GRADE - Mrs. Schatte: Unbelievable! This is our last Cardinal Chatter. The years go by faster and faster! I have enjoyed being your child's teacher this school year. We have had our ups and downs, but through it all we have grown. As the children worked on division in math on Monday morning, I was amazed at how they have grown in math skills. Sometimes it's slow going, but we are improving. I wish all of you God's blessings as your child moves on. Most importantly, make Jesus a part of your everyday life. Stay close to Him, and pray with your child. That's really what FLS is about above everything else; making sure that each child knows Jesus as their Savior. Blessings on your summer. Very sincerely, Mrs. Schatte

(5th Graders, be sure to read Mrs. Harbeson’s note below…)

MIDDLE SCHOOL 5/18 8th Grade Graduation, 7:30 p.m. 5/22 5:45 Youth Group Meeting; youth house

FLC&S YOUTH GROUP: Youth Group meets from 5:45-7:15 on Sunday evening, May 22 in the youth

house. Come join us for an end-of-the-school-year party. We'll also plan for summer events and new ideas for next year, and, of course, have pizza and snacks. Everyone 13 through high school is invited.

Mrs. Goll: I thank my God every time I remember you. Ph. 1:3. We’re ready to close out another great year. Thank you for sharing your children with us. Students, thank you for all your hard work and all the kindnesses that you have shown me and one another this year. Always remember how much God loves you! Blessings on a great summer! On a personal note, thank you so much to David, Carol, and Shelly for all their hard work to make my retirement party so special. And thanks to each of you for the kind words and notes of congratulations. My career at FLCS has been a great blessing for my life and the families and students of FLCS will remain always in my heart and in my prayers.

Mrs. Harbeson: We have almost made it! This is our last official Chatter of the year. The year has gone by so quickly! Thank you, Students and Parents, for your support and love this year. I am truly blessed to be a

Page 5: Chatter 5 11 16

- 5 - Growing up Into Jesus, Reaching Out with Jesus, Walking Together in Jesus

part of your student's life. I'd like to be the first to welcome the incoming 6th graders to the middle school! Life in this building will be a big change from last year, but we have a great group of 7th and 8th graders who will help you adjust to middle school. As for our outgoing 8th grade class...I hope you all know how loved you are - not only by me, your other teachers, your parents, and your family, but especially by God! My wish is that when you leave FLS, the most important lesson you've ever learned is knowing that God loves you. He always has been and always will be with you throughout your lives. I have known some of you since you were babies, and now you are entering high school. It's hard to believe! I'm really looking forward to graduation next week so we can look back over all your years at First Lutheran, and then send you off to PoHi next year. You all are going to be great...and remember, you are always welcome to come back to visit. God's blessings to you all! Have a great summer!

Mrs. Hanson: First, I want to thank each and every one of you for a good year! I love teaching, but it is even more fun and lovable when I get to work with a great bunch of kids and families. 8th graders, all of you are more than prepared to head across the street. I pray you not only take with you all that you learned here at FLS, but that you take all the love you received. Remember whose child you really are, God's. I know you will go and make us proud.

On that note... We are not done with school yet!!! All classes still have a comprehensive final in science. This test will be Wednesday, May 18. We will review in class, but studying still needs to be done at home! This is also the last week that I will accept any late work. Anything missing will become and stay a '0' after Thursday, May 12.

7th grade has one last responsibility. Every year, we host graduation dinner. The students help serve dinner and clean up. The parents help clean up. Graduation is May 18. Dinner starts at 6:00, so 7th graders need to arrive by 5:30 pm . 7th grade students will be fed pizza before they have to work. The kids also need to dress nicely in slacks and dress shirts, dresses, or skirts. etc, since it is a formal occasion.

Mr. Covert: We’re nearing the end of the school year! I pray that everyone found this year to be a positive experience, and will be ready to start again in August!

Even though we’re getting close to the end of the year, we’re still learning a few things! In 8th grade, we’re getting started with World War II, the causes and we’ll see how far we can get into it before the year ends. 7th grade is working through Central Asia, and we’re going to try to get through it and Southwest Asia before we run out of time. As for 6th grade, we’re going through the Reformation and all the impacts it’s had on the world since it occurred around 500 years ago.

7th grade parents, I need your DC information forms before the end of the school year. Please send them to school with your student or bring them in yourself before the end of the next week. Thank you!

I pray that God blesses us as we wrap up this school year, and watches over us this summer so we can all come back ready for the next year!

8TH GRADE SKIP DAY: We will be going to Sky Zone in Tulsa May 19th to celebrate graduation. Parents need to get online before the 18th and fill out a waiver for their student. The website is www.skyzone.com/tulsa. The cost for this trip is $18, plus lunch money.
