President’s Message
Program for March 10th Meeting Eden Cross, Animal Communicator,
will provide an overview of how Animal Communicators share their perceptions to help us
better understand our pets.
WOW! How time is flying by, seems like just yesterday that we moved into our new indoor facility and now we will be moving to a much larger unit. This one will be big enough to hold our obedience trials after this year. We will be able to have more than one class going on at a time, but still have classes going on most everyday of the week. We are so fortunate to be able to have this after so many years out in the parking lot. We’ve all had to make changes and probably some more to come, but change is inevitable with the growth of our club, some may like the changes while other may not. I for one do not like a lot of change but realize that they are needed for the good of the club. I
must say though, after having classes indoors, I would NEVER want to take a class outside again and have to fight the weather. It’s nice not to have to set up equip-ment every time we have a class but that being said, there are other things that we must all do like helping to keep our facility clean. Claire Israel-son is heading the cleaning commit-tee and will need your help when she sends out a plea to come help clean our training center. I want to thank Renee’ Johnson for publishing the newsletter for me while I’m on the mend. Hope to see you soon, Joan Costello

Thank you to all of the club workers who donated their time and effort to work tirelessly and help make the agility trial a success. It is not possible to mention everyone by name, but honestly I felt blessed with such great support and team effort in making this show run smoothly. From the individuals who set up on Thur to those who stayed to tear down, the individuals who pulled the trailers in and arranged for the arena, the individual who manned the ribbon table and ordered them ahead of time to make sure we had enough, the individual who put together the wonderful raffle baskets, the individual who coordinated the workers sign up all weekend, the individual who made the lovely MACH bars, the individuals who worked the ring all week-end, the individuals who made sure the courses were built perfectly, the individuals who watered the arena at night, the individual who printed the workers tickets, the individual who purchased the judges gifts and arranged for the judges motel, the individual who bought the supplies needed for the show, the individuals who brought food and water, the individual who manned the workers food table and made sure there was hot water and coffee all weekend, and the individuals who did the many jobs big and small throughout the weekend - you are ALL wonderful and were greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jude and Jack Valloze
QUICK NOTES 1. Please e-mail Janet Berry if you have any questions about agility. She is very often driving for business and it is hard for her to answer questions at that time. [email protected] 2. We would like to know how many people would be interested in a Snake
Clinic in the fall. We will need 25– 30 dogs and handlers for the veterinarian to come test. Please e-mail Janet Berry if interested [email protected] 3. Standing Rule Changes to be discussed at the March meeting. You can find a copy of the proposed changes on our web site. Ocodb.org 4. OCOD is adding new members each month and while many are experienced dog club veterans, others are not. The board has approved a new Member Mentor Program and Pat Mozden has offered to be the team captain. Mentors will be assigned to a couple of new members and will then keep in touch with them during their first six months. Encourage involvement in club activities and meetings. They will be a “go to” person if they have questions. For mentors, Pat is looking for active, experienced members who attend meetings regularly and have at least some involvement in our training an/or trials each year. It should not be a big chore but will require some follow-up with each person assigned to you. if you are willing to be involved in this program, please e-mail Pat directly at: [email protected] 5. OBED./ Rally TRIAL TROPHIES : Hope Johnson is asking this year for cute things that you
have a skill making. Ie: painting, knitting, cross stitch, any of your hobbies that would be a cute prize. Questions please contact Hope via e-mail [email protected]

TAXES — DEDUCTIONS FOR DOG EXPENSES ?? When you are working on your taxes, do you find yourself glancing down at your dog and wondering—Are any of my dog care expenses tax-deductible? “In general the answer is “NO”, says a certified public accountant. Owners should discuss their specifics with their own accountant, but there are a few exceptions to the rule: 1. The cost of training, feeding, and maintaining a guide dog or other service dog
used by someone who is disabled may be deductible. 2. Businesses needing high security can depreciate the cost of the dog, and deduct
training, medical, and food costs, if using the dog as security, or for drug or weap-ons detection.
3. When dogs are used in business as necessary tools—such as a dog trainer using a dog as a necessary tool or visual aid—the business owner may depreciate the purchase cost of the dog and deduct yearly maintenance costs. 4. Breeders who run their program as a business—showing profitability in three of the past five years—can deduct normal business expenses such as medical costs, food, and veterinarian care related to the breeding program.
