Homecoming 2014Every year CHCS plans a night when alumni return to reconnect

with old high-school friends and teachers and the high-school basketball teams play their games that evening at the Ozark Christian College gymnasium. We also announce our homecoming court and crown the King and Queen. At CHCS we choose our court by character qualities.

1,000 PointsJosh Woodmansee, CHCS Senior

basketball captain, scored his 1,000th point on January 8th with a three point shot in a game against Liberal High School. As a 6’5” forward, he currently averages 20 points and 9 rebounds per game. Josh has been captain of the basketball team for the past two seasons. Coach Eric Johnson said, “Josh has been an outstanding student athlete for four years. He has been the varsity basketball captain for the last two years and his leadership skills will follow him through college and beyond. The honor to reach and pass 1,000 points has only been accomplished by a few that play the great game of basketball and we congratulate Josh on this feat.” Congratulations Josh!!

Alex Bruey Signs Letter of Intent

Senior Alex Bruey signed a letter of intent Tuesday, December 2nd to play volleyball at Dodge City, Kansas, Community College. Alex played varsity for three seasons as an outside hitter and led the Cougars in kills (261) and ace serves (52) as a senior and was first team all-Spring River Valley Conference and first team Class 2 all-district. She plans to major in athletic training while at Dodge City.

Christmas Appreciation DayAnd that’s just what our CHCS middle and high school students did on

December 12th. The 3rd annual Christmas Appreciation Day was a huge success, with most students participating. CHCS Students enjoyed a day of celebrating Christmas fun. Students wore their “ugly” sweaters (some borrowed from grandmothers) while others dressed from head to toe in Christmas apparel. It was a fun day for all who participated!!

Harold Thompson HonoredOn January 15th, the East Middle School Gymnasium was dedicated in memory

of Harold Thompson, a former CHCS faculty member. In addition to the dedication, Mayor Mike Seibert proclaimed January 15th as Harold Thompson Day. Thompson served at Commerce (Oklahoma) High School for one year before spending the next 35 years as a PE instructor at South, North and East junior high schools in addition to serving as assistant principal at South and principal at East. From 1976 until he retired in 1986, he served as athletic director at Joplin High School. Following his retirement he served at College Heights Christian School as the athletic director and PE instructor. A long-time friend of Mr. Thompson said “He was a quality person who loved and served God and was a witness to God. He was born to teach and was a great teacher.” We are blessed to have had and continue to have great leaders instructing our children at CHCS.

Fourth Grade AstronomyThe fourth grade classes completed a unit on astronomy recently. They

learned about constellations, planets, and God’s creation of our universe. After spending several weeks reading, studying, and learning they ended the unit by designing their own planets. The students enjoyed icing their own sugar cookies and then adding their own creations to their planet design.

History Day 2014Annual History Day presentations took place on December 5th. High

School students enrolled in a history class created a display board about a chosen Native American tribe. The boards covered topics about tribes, customs, controversies, and today’schallenges. The boards were displayedin the atrium for everyone to see.

Spelling Bee Winners

CHCS elementary and middle school students took part in the annual CHCS spelling bee. Congratulations to Kayley (6th grade) and Jay Ball (4th grade) this year’s winners. Both students will move on to represent CHCS in the Joplin Globe’s 38th annual spelling bee. Kayley will represent CHCS middle school and Jay will represent elementary. Congratulations and good luck!!

GeographyBee Winner

CHCS students took place in the annual school Geography Bee on December 11th. Two winners from each grade (4th through 8th) won their classroom competitions and participated in the school-wide bee. This year’s winner was Tessa Greathouse. She will go on to compete at the state level later this school year. Congratulations, Tessa!

Patriot’s Pen Winners

Each year more than 100,000 6-8th grade students enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen essay contest.The first-place winner from each state competes to win one of 46 national awards totaling $46,000. The national first-place winner wins $5,000 and an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C., in March. The contest encourages students to look at America’s history, along with their experiences in American society, by writing a 300-400 word essay, explaining their views based on a theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. This year CHCS had three winners. Eighth graders – Reid Beard (left) won 2nd and Garret Lewis (middle) won 3rd place in the Youth Essay division. Senior, Grace Bass (right) won First Place in the Voice of Democracy Division. Commander Kirk Brite told the students during the assembly that no other school has ever had as many winners area wide as College Heights. Congratulations Reid, Garret and Grace, you make us proud.

2014-2015 Annual Fund Kick-OffWe kicked off this year’s Annual Fund campaign in December and it will run

until June 30, 2015. We have established a goal of $ 55,000 in order to reachthe following contribution targets…

n $5,000 additional funding that is needed to replace our oldest bus

n $10,000 for special tuition assistance for struggling families

n $20,000 for additional instructional technology resources

n $20,000 for classroom furnishings and facility upgrades

We hope to increase the number of participants byat least 50%, from 96 donors last year, to at least150 financial partners who will commit to supportthe 2014-2015 Opportunity and Excellencecampaign. There are several ways to contribute tothis year’s fund. You can send a check or donateonline by going to our webpage. Annual Christmas Store

Elementary students enjoyed shopping at the annual Christmas store to purchase items for their parents, siblings, pets, and many others. The store is open every year during the Christmas season and allows students to do some personal, surprise shopping for family members.

Little Miss CheerDecember 6th was the annual CHCS Little Miss Cheer Camp. Interested

elementary students participated in a day full of fun, sponsored by our high school cheerleaders. Their hard work was featured at our homecoming game on December 19th.
