ENGLISH

You will sit two exams of an hour length each. One is Contemporary Poetry and the other Othello.

For the poetry exam you will be required to compare one of the poems from your Anthology with a linked unseen poem written this century. (Contemporary Poetry) You will need to have revised all the poems in your Student Anthology.

To be able to show the links between poems according to themes and ideas: love, politics, history, old age, art and change.

You also need to identify key quotations from all the poems and to be able to draw connections, comparisons and contrasts across all the collection.

Select key quotations that link to the question and analyse them. AO2

You need to understand key poetic terms (pg 4 Study Guide): stanza, metaphor, imagery, symbolism, rhyme, rhythm, caesura, diction, oxymoron, enjambment, stanza, metre. Evaluate how the poet uses these devices to demonstrate feelings or viewpoint. AO1/AO2.

For Othello need to have a clear and confident understanding of the play:

Your answers should demonstrate the following.

AO1: coherent argument with clear points made.

AO1: clear and accurate written style using appropriate terminology.

AO1: appropriate critical voice used to interpret.

AO2: consistent and detailed text references.

AO2: Analysis of language, form and structure.

AO3: Consistent reference to Shakespeare’s purpose and his influences. Jacobean era.

AO3: Demonstrates an understanding of audience reactions, both past and present

AO5: Showing that you have read other essays or criticism on Othello and can actively engage with different interpretations

GEOGRAPHY

TOPIC 7: SUPERPOWERS

PRE-READING NOTES

KQ1: What are superpowers and how have they changed over time?

7.1 Geopolitical power stems from a range of human physical characteristics of superpowers

Superpowers, emerging and regional powers can be defined using contrasting characteristics (economic, political, military, cultural, demographic and access to natural resources)

Mechanisms of maintaining power sit on a spectrum from hard to soft power, which vary in their effectiveness

The relative importance of these characteristics and mechanisms for maintaining power has changed over time (Mackinder’s)

KQ1: What are superpowers and how have they changed over time?

7.2 Patterns of power change over time and can be uni-bi or mult-polar

The maintenance of power during the imperial era by direct colonial control Control during the post-colonial era through neo colonialism and the emergence of China

How do patterns of power affects levels of stability?

KQ1: What are superpowers and how have they changed over time?

7.3 Emerging powers vary in their influence on people the [physical environment, which can change rapidly over time

Who are the BRIC nations and why are they considered increasingly important?

What are the varying strengths and weaknesses of the BRIC nations

What theories explain changing patterns of power

KQ2: What are the impacts of superpowers on the global economy, political systems and physical environment

7.4 Superpowers have a significant influence over the global economic system

How do superpowers influence the global economy through IGOs

How do TNCs influence trade through technology?

How do TNCs influence trade through cultural influence

KQ2: What are the impacts of superpowers on the global economy, political systems and physical environment

7.5 Superpowers have a significant influence over the global economic system

Superpowers and emerging countries play a role in global actions (crisis response, climate change, conflict)

Alliances, both militarily and economically increase interdependence and are important to geostrategy and global influence

Th UN are important to

KQ2: What are the impacts of superpowers on the global economy, political systems and physical environment

GEOGRAPHY CONTD ………………

Superpower resources demands and cause environmental degradation and their carbon emissions contribute disproportionately to global warming

There are differences in the willingness to act to reduce carbon emissions and reach global agreements on environmental issues.

Future growth in middle-class consumption in emerging superpowers has implications for the availability and cost of key resources as well as the physical environment

KQ3: What spheres of influence are contested by superpowers and what are the implications of this?

7.7 Global influence is contested in a number of different economic, environmental and political spheres.

Tensions can arise over the acquisition of physical resources where ownership is disputed and agreements exists over exploitation

The global system of influence can be contested leading to tensions over territory and physical resources and in some cases results in open conflict with implications for people and physical environment

Political spheres of influence can be contested leading to tensions over territory and physical resources and some cases results in open conflict with implication for people and physical environments

KQ3: What spheres of influence are contested by superpowers and what are the implications of this?

7.8 Developing nationals have changing relationships with superpowers with consequences for people and the physical environment

Developing economic ties between emerging powers and the developing world increase interdependence, generate environmental impacts and bring opportunities and challenges

The rising economic importance of certain Asian countries on the global stage increases the geopolitical influence of the region but also creates economic and political tensions within the region.

Cultural, political, economic and environmental tensions in the middle East represent ongoing challenges to superpowers and emerging powers due to complex geopolitical relations combined with the supply of vital energy resources.

KQ3: What spheres of influence are contested by superpowers and what are the implications of this?

7.9 Existing superpowers face ongoing economic restructuring, which challenges their power.

Economic problems represent an ongoing challenge to the USA and EU

The economic costs of maintaining global military power and space exploration are questioned in some existing powers.

The future balance of global power in 2030 and 2050 is uncertain and there are a range of possible outcomes.

PRODUCT DESIGN

Paper 01 (1 hour) – 36 marks

Revise the following: Digital Technology (B) Health & Safety (E) Alternative Energy Production (F) Modern Advertising Media (C)

Design Requirements and suitable materials for CHILDREN’S TOYS

Manufacturing Processes used with WOOD

Paper 01 consists of SIX QUESTIONS. It focuses on CORE CONTENT, MATERIALS and PROCESSES. It follows the same format each year:

a) always shows a product and asks for 3 design requirements (same as a spec points really)

b) and c) ask you to give two things or describe two things (usually features and benefits) and each is worth 4 marks so write more than one or two words!

d) also requires you to describe, but has a blank space as well as lines, so you will need to include a diagram and usually the benefits of something

e) Focuses on your knowledge of materials and processes – you must state a suitable specific material for part of a product then describe using annotated diagrams how you would make a batch of them (look at how many to decide the correct process)

f) always asks you to discuss the implications of a particular issue – so make sure you describe two or three issues and use relevant examples to support your discussion

Paper 02 (1.5 hours) – 54 marks

Prepare for the following theme: Outdoor eating during the summer at school

Paper 02 is a DESIGN QUESTION, its done in an A3 booklet and follows the same format each year:

You choose ONE of eight design challenges (usually Resistant Materials but you might feel confident enough to answer the engineering, manufacturing or even the graphics focus on the day!)

a) requires you to write 3 Specification Points (you know the drill by now. Focus on functional requirements, be specific, avoid vague and generic points and always justify)

b) you will need to sketch 4 different ideas for the challenge (2 pages). Marks are awarded for:

i) the Range of ideas, ii) the quality of your Annotation (Materials, Manufacturing Processes and Measurements) iii) Evaluating the ideas against the Spec

c) You will sketch the best idea again, then identify and justify its key features (at least 4 features)

You can do the papers in any order – some prefer to do paper 02 (design question) first
