EDWARDSVILLE — While a team title is always nice, there’s more to the Southern Illinois Swim Championships.

Since Edwardsville and O’Fallon are the only two area high schools with full in-season swim teams, the

SISC meet was started by EHS to give swimmers from other area schools a chance to compete at a prep varsity meet level prior to the IHSA sectionals. And on Wednesday at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center, six of those teams took advantage of the opportunity and Alton’s Claire Paule made a solid state-ment with a first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

“We had a really fun meet against some local teams,” Edwardsville coach Christian Rhoten said. “We saw lots of season-best and even lifetime-best times, which is always a fun unexpected surprise when we haven’t started resting yet.

“One of the hardest parts of high school swimming are the dual meets, which is a lot of swimming in a short amount of time,’ he said. “We don’t have to worry about back-to-back events and this mimics the layout of sectionals.”

The area sectional meet will be at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center on Saturday, Nov. 6. Event winners, as well as those who meet qualifying times, will advance to the IHSA Girls State Swim Meet Nov. 12-13 at the FMC Natatorium at Ty Warner Park in Westmont.

Wednesday at the Chuck Fruit Aquatic Center, EHS and O’Fallon tied for the team title with 265 points each. Alton High led the rest of the field with 139 points, followed by Belleville Althoff with 122 points, Collinsville 114 and Granite City 112 points.

Individually, Alton’s Paule swam to her first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle in a time of 6:00.27. Paule was the only event winner from a school other than Edwardsville or O’Fallon.

The host Tigers had five individual winners and won all three relay races.

Edwardsville first-place finishes included Lia Kamp-werth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:22.43, Ava Whittaker in the 100 butterfly in 1:03.25, Ally Janson in the 100 freestyle in 56.42 seconds and in the 100 backstroke in 1:03.02 and Karis Chen in the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.65.

Edwardsville’s Taylor Wilkerson, Henley Mason, Chloe Harrison and Per Onal teamed up to win the 400 freestyle relay in 4:01.05. The Tigers’ Whittaker, Janson, Kampwerth and Maddie Milburn won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.94 and the EHS Janson, Chen, Whittaker and Milburn won the 200 medley relay in 1:55.51.

“Moving forward, we’re full-steam ahead to the sec-tional,” Rhoten said. “The girls are looking forward to some well deserved rest and to be ready to compete for a sectional title.”

EDWARDSVILLE — SIUE dropped a 2-0 decision Wednesday to Evansville in Missouri Valley Conference men’s soccer at Korte Sta-dium.

The loss knocked the Cougars back to 2-6 in MVC play with just two games to play in the regular season. SIUE is 4-9-2 overall. Evansville improved to 2-5-1 in league play and 2-12-1 overall.

“We need to have more urgency early in the game,” SIUE coach Cale Wassermann said. “We need to have six to eight shots in the first

half as opposed to three or four. We had double the shots in the second half. We need to put teams under pressure. We can’t let teams get through 45 minutes without the fear of a goal. We didn’t do that tonight.”

The Cougars outshot the Aces 12-6 overall. Both teams put five shots on goal.

David Lianes nearly put the Cougars up in the game’s opening min-utes, streaking down the right sideline before unloading a shot which hit the corner of the goal and deflected away.

“First off, it was a great run by him,” Was-

sermann said. “He’s been asked to play a few positions. Tonight, he got the start at left back. He made a good run, almost scored. Again, that should be happen-ing six to eight times in the half.”

Jakub Hall got Evans-ville on the board in the 12th minute with a shot from the left side of the box.. and in for the eventual game-winner.

“All they needed was the one moment in the first half and they bagged one,” Wasser-mann said. “Credit to them.”

Davis Peck made it 2-0 Evansville after a giveaway by the SIUE

defense in the 69th min-ute.

“We as a program need to have more urgency and discipline,” Wassermann said. “It’s about recognition. It’s about looking in the mirror and saying we were not good enough tonight. That’s on every-body, coaching staff included.”

SIUE finishes the home regular season Sunday afternoon with against Loyola.

“You need to take wins,” Wassermann said. “You can’t expect anything to be given to you. I don’t think we had that mentality tonight.”

The first eight sea-sons of Brussels girls volleyball produced one regional championship.

The Raiders earned a shot at a second regional plaque in season No. 9 Wednesday night in what has developed into an historic season. And when the season is com-plete, Brussels girls vol-leyball will be history.

Twelve kills from Hope Odelehr and 18 assists from Isabelle Friedel powered the Raiders to a 24-26, 25-19, 25-18 over the Liberty Eagles in a semi-final of the Payson Sey-mour Class 1A Regional.

Brussels is playing its final season before entering a co-op agree-ment with the Calhoun Warriors as host school in 2022. The Raiders won their first and only regional by beating Met-ro-East Lutheran during a 23-13 season in 2017.

The Raiders got back to 20 wins by beating Liberty and take a 20-14 record into Thursday’s title game against the 25-10 Mendon Unity Mustangs. Unity advanced by routing Payson 25-11, 25-8 in Wednesday’s other semi-final.

Odelehr’s 12 kills came from 20 attacks with just two errors for a .500 hitting percent-age. Delani Klaas added seven kills and Mary Jacobs had five kills for Brussels, whose 10-play-er rotation featured six seniors. Friedel made seven digs, Morgan Klaas had two aces and both Odelehr and Delani Klaas scored off two blocks for the Raiders. Liberty closes at 8-23.

Jacksonville Routt 2, Greenfield 1 – The Rockets avenged a three-set loss during the regu-lar season by beating the Tigers 25-20, 18-25, 25-21 in a semifinal at the Springfield Lutheran Class 1A Regional. Routt, which got 14 kills from Hannah Parlier, is 18-19 and will play No. 1-seeded Lutheran in Thursday’s title match.

Baylee Bilbruck had nine kills and 19 digs, and Kara Hallock had five kills for Greenfield, which picked up 10 assists from Naomi Lansaw, nine assists and two aces from Tor-rie McAdams and 15 digs from Emma Gibbs. Greenfield finishes 22-13-1.

Camp Point Central 2, Calhoun 0 – The Panthers continued the momentum mounted

from extra points in the opening game and eliminated the Warriors 27-25, 25-20 in a Con-cord Triopia Class 1A Regional semifinal. Cen-tral improves to 17-18-1. Calhoun ends at 16-18.

Carlyle 2, Metro-East Lutheran 0 – The Knights extended the match to three sets, but could not extend their season with the Indians winning 25-16, 23-25, 25-14 in a semifinal at the Metro-East Lutheran Class 1A Regional at Hooks Gym in Edwards-ville. Carlyle is 20-16 and will play Valmeyer for the title.

MEL, which closes at 12-18, got 10 kills from Sarah Henke, eight kills from Lexi Bozarth, seven kills from Aprile Hepner, 25 assists from Vivienne Runnalls and two aces from Sidnee Schwarz.

Valmeyer 2, Father McGivney 0 – The top-seeded Pirates advanced by beating the Griffins 25-10, 25-19 in a 1A regional semifinal at Metro-East Lutheran in Edwardsville. Brooke Miller had 11 kills for Valmeyer, which moved to 25-12. McGivney wraps at 13-22.
