by Paul Marinellithe 2016 australian V8 supercar Championship series calendar delivers some major changes which should prove to be pivotal to the sport’s growth in both event and television audience reach.

australia’s premier motor racing series had faced long term criticism, from both fans and the media in relation to the long gaps that existed between several of the V8 supercar rounds. this had the effect of the sport losing momentum with fans, while also resulting in a reduction of mainstream media coverage. the main focus of the criticism was that the sport would find itself lost in the myriad of australian sporting event media coverage and for general sports fans, it would be impossible to remember when races were being held.

as any sports administrator will tell you, the frequency of reaching your consumer market is imperative to the success of any sport, providing the maximum exposure for the sport and all of its sponsors, in which now more than ever, is a matter of survival.

You have to feel for the sport’s administrators though, as scheduling a calendar of events is never a simple task, particularly when the aim is to try and avoid direct conflicts with other motor racing and major events that can take many sets of eyes away from your sport. in the case of motor racing, no calendar can be finalised until the Formula one calendar is settled each year, which can cause significant problems. another important factor is to allow time for the teams to be able to repair and prepare their cars for each event.

after a number of V8 supercar seasons which saw gaps in some cases of over a month between events, largely due to event conflicts, scheduling issues with specific venues and weather considerations getting in the way, V8 supercars australia seems to have found the optimum balance for the 2016 season. their solution provides event regularity along with the addition of an exciting new international event within the asian region.

according to V8 supercars Ceo James Warburton, “We have taken a close look at the calendar and developed something that we believe will be great for the teams, drivers and fans across australia. this more compact calendar delivers consistent and regular events throughout the season and expands the championship into asia in what is a truly exciting development for the sport. We believe that it will result in an even bigger following for our sport both locally and overseas with

bigger crowds along with our expanded television coverage on both Fox sports and network ten.”

Highlights of the 2016 V8 Supercar season include:

• the Clipsal 500 adelaide remains the season opener from march 3-6 (You can use your reward points to join Capricorn at their exclusive corporate facility at this event)

• phillip island round moves from november to april, thereby following the australian grand prix in melbourne

• a brand new championship event to be held on the streets of downtown Kuala lumpur from august 12 to 14

• shorter breaks between all events with one four week winter break

• the sydney 500 to end the season from november 25-27 instead of december

Here’s the complete 2016 V8 Supercar Calendar:

march 3-6 Clipsal 500 - adelaide (sa)

march 17-20 australian Formula one grand prix - albert park (ViC)

november 4-6 auckland 500, pukekohe park (nZ)

november 25-27 sydney 500, sydney olympic park (nsW)

Fitting in 16 events across nine months from march to november, the stand-outs of the 2016 season will once again be the spectacular season opener on the streets of adelaide, the Clipsal 500, closely followed by the australian Formula one grand prix which takes place just two weeks later. the extremely popular darwin round retains a June slot, with the townsville 400 preceding the inaugural Kl City grand prix V8 supercar round in malaysia. after a display event held in august this year with just five V8 supercars, the tight downtown street circuit is sure to provide plenty of action when the full field of V8 supercars go to battle there for the first time as a championship round. the two-driver endurance races get underway from september as per usual, with auckland’s pukekohe raceway marking the second international event of the season in early november, just ahead of the sydney olympic park season finale.

remember that Capricorn travel can assist you to visit any of these events during 2016.

PROTECTING YOUR BUSINESS Keep out of the dark Install automatic movement detector alarms and sensors or timed lights at the front and rear of your business, especially around doors and windows. These are an inexpensive security measure to deter burglars.

Be on guard Maintain regular security patrol checks of the premises.

Don’t give them a leg to stand on Lock ladders, equipment and tools away to ensure thieves cannot use them to their advantage in the event of a break in.

Protect your equipment Engrave your equipment and tools with your driver’s license number and record the engraved numbers and also serial number details of theft prone items onto a property inventory form. Ensure you store the property inventory form, receipts and photos of your valuable assets away from the premises, so in the event of a fire or break in these important documents don’t perish.

Lock up Lock all garaged vehicles and keep the keys in a safe and secure location to restrict unauthorized access or vehicle theft. Always close and lock the workshop garage door, including any internal doors which have access to the workshop. Use deadlocks, window locks, safes and alarm systems to protect your business contents, stock, employees’ hand tools and business vehicles over the Christmas break.

Don’t let your assets go up in smoke Remove stockpiles of flammable materials from outside your business premises to remove any potential fire hazard risk.

Safe site power Ensure power points are not overloaded with double and quadruple power adaptors. Overloading a power point could lead to an electrical fire on the premises.

Keep dangers out of sight Chemicals such as aerosols, cleaners, sprays, paints, thinners and pesticides should all be stored out of sight in a cupboard.

Now is a great time to check your protection amounts to ensure all is in order. Make sure you are adequetly protected by contacting a Capricorn Risk Services representative today.

TATBiz

For more business resources and information on our coaching programs go to www.tatbiz.net.au/resources

as vehicle technology rushes ahead at warp speed,

technicians around australia have come to realise

that embracing training, of whatever type, could

be essential to survival in business.

this realisation was the motivation behind

Capricorn society’s decision several years ago to

team with tat Biz to develop a unique business

skills improvement program to bolster the

technical expertise of Capricorn members.

a workshop can have the best technicians in

the world, but without solid business processes

coupled with a clear understanding of things

like profit and loss, cash flow management,

employment agreements and customer retention,

a business would be like a ship without a rudder.

the nine steps to a better workshop program is

unique, exclusive and free to Capricorn members.

never before has so much information about

running a successful business been assembled in

one place, served up in a way that everyone can

readily understand.

so what are the 137 good reasons for visiting

www.tatbiz.net.au/resources?

Currently, this website established exclusively for

Capricorn members, comprises 48 articles, 71

templates and 18 video tutorials, all relating to

business improvement and profitability.

the nine steps cover the essentials of running

a business – understanding your numbers,

generating enquiries, converting enquiries into

customers, getting customers to come back,

maximising the value of each invoice, generating

healthy profits, managing and building the team,

building business systems and managing your

time.

tat Biz has ample evidence to show that those

businesses that took the nine steps program

to heart improved their profitability, built more

productive workshop teams and generally ended

up with a happy working environment.

among the most popular resources were those

dealing with the human side of every business –

the staff. Job agreements and employee induction

resources were accompanied by templates that

could be downloaded and implemented straight

away, ensuring that everyone on the team had a

clear understanding of what was expected of them.

Under the heading of Financial Control, the most

popular subject was the financial dashboard

– same as the dashboard in your car, with the

same warning lights and the same gauges and

controls. the tat Biz dashboard was designed to

give business owners an overall snapshot of their

business performance week by week, not just once

a year when it is often too late.

there’s a great deal of emphasis on communication

in the nine steps program, and we don’t mean

on Facebook or the twittersphere. if ever

communication between business and customer

and staff and business owner or manager were a

priority, it is certainly now.

the nine steps program even drills down to

telephone answering techniques, explaining how

every phone call can lead to profit and providing

proven templates for treating potential customers

on that all important first phone call.

and probably the most important subject of all

is how aftermarket workshops can introduce

processes, systems and customer facilities to

compete with car dealerships that are introducing

warranty and incentive programs aimed at

retaining their customers for life. never has the

auto repair business been so competitive.

there are good times ahead for those workshops

that understand these new market forces and that

are prepared to embrace change.

Jump on to the resources pages of the tat Biz

website and see if there is anything in there that

you can use to improve your businesses.

Born to Race1970 Z28 Camaro

the Chevrolet Camaro was first introduced at a general motors

press Conference on June 28, 1966. When asked the obvious, “What

does the word ‘Camaro’ actually mean?” product managers left the

assembled media no doubt as to the vehicle’s ambitions for the

track, claiming it was “a small, vicious animal that eats mustangs”.

thus one of the great racing rivalries was born.

rebuilt by Capricorn member, Carl Chamberlain of Bromley auto

services, this 1970, Z28 has truly lived up to its racing pedigree.

it was originally owned and raced in club days at ruapuna by ray

archibald. doug allan then purchased the car in 1974, winning the

1975 lady Wigram super saloon Car race before competing in the

“Castrol gtX” series in 1976.

the vehicle then changed hands a number of times before being

tracked down and reclaimed by doug allan’s son, graeme in 2008.

no slouch in the racing stakes himself as 10 x nZ motocross

champion, graeme was inspired to restore the car to its former

glory and once again take on some the world’s most legendary

muscle cars.

“as a nine year old kid, i used to idolize cars like the pdl mustang,

Jim richards' sidchrome mustang, red dawson’s marlboro Camaro

and paul Fahey’s Cologne Capri. the epic battles these guys had

at Wigram in the 1976 Flying Farwell with allan moffat in his Coca

Cola mustang will always be my favorite race of all time. my dad

was in that race after winning the five litre production saloons race

earlier in the day against art mcKee. my brother don caught the

champagne cork from graeme mcrae’s lady Wigram trophy victory

celebrations and threw it in the back of dad’s Camaro before that

race to wish him good luck. Unfortunately it rolled forward under

braking and lodged itself behind the floor mounted accelerator.

needless to say the result wasn’t good for dad or my brother!”

graeme recalled.

a close friend of graeme, Carl Chamberlain’s great respect for

this car’s history was evident in the rebuild. tremendous care was

taken to maintain the historic nature of the car while still bringing

in some quality modern technology to make the car reliable and

fun to drive.

Unveiled at the 2015 Frankfurt motor show, the electric-powered porsche mission e certainly turned some heads. the mission e draws on the electric drive and energy storage developed for the 919 Hybrid race car along with the lightweight construction and battery technology created for the 918 spyder.

With a 0-100km/h time of 3.5 seconds and a claimed range of over 500km, the mission e holds true to porsche's practical performance mantra, while also taking a nod to the future with the latest in 800 volt recharging technology and full zero-emission compatibility.

power for the four-wheel drive mission e is provided by two electric motors – one mounted up front acting on the front axle and one at the rear providing drive to the rear wheels. porsche is yet to reveal the individual power loadings for each motor, but confirms a combined output of over 440kW. this provides the new concept with over 60kW more than the twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre six cylinder powered 911 turbo –the fastest accelerating series production porsche model in production right now.

Using an industry first 800 volt process, porsche claims the mission e’s battery can be charged to 80 per cent of

capacity in just 15 minutes.

With striking styling that combines reinterpreted elements from the iconic 911, including its plunging roof line, side window graphic and prominent rear wheel arches, along with contemporary touches from the 918 spyder, the new concept is clearly identifiable as a porsche from the very first glance.

porsche has tentatively planned a production version to be released in 2018.
