checks and balance for safety

On each project, an engineering firm monitors and reports on the safety and environmental measures in place on work sites.

Every week, the team meets to discuss all aspects of upcoming construction activity.

Emergency services —police, fire and ambulance—are informed about impactful work activity so alternative route options can be considered.

On occasion, night work is scheduled on busy roads to avoid traffic congestion during the higher-traffic daytime hours.

The Community Liaisons proactively notify businesses and residents directly impacted by work activity.

There are many checks and balances in place on each of the vivaNext projects to ensure safety and compliance on the part of everyone on the project team.

Who can I contact if I have a question? Keeping the public informed and engaged with our project is key. Our Community Liaisons work with property owners, tenants, local businesses and the general public.

Construction bulletins are emailed regularly to people who have subscribed to updates, typically those who live, work and commute through the project areas. This is to ensure that the public is aware of major construction activities such as lane closures. You can sign-up for email updates for the project you’re most interested in at vivanext.com/subscribe.

Pay attention to posted signs in and around construction zones. Because construction zones change as work progresses, it’s especially important for everyone – pedestrians, cyclists and drivers – to pay attention to posted signs. Watch for signs and traffic barrels that indicate lane closures and shifts, as well as relocated sidewalks and bus stops.

In addition to existing legislation and local bylaws, our contractors receive certification from industry associations, and have their own safety and quality assurance processes, including:

• Daily safety meetings before work starts, including a Pre-Safety Assessment—contractor and subcontractor crews each receive a list of tasks for the day, potential hazards, and safety measures are reviewed and then put in place.

• Traffic Control Plans and Traffic Protection Plans, which adhere to lane closures and safety measures outlined in the Ontario Traffic Manual – Book 7, such as using signs and barrier placement to protect workers, motorists, pedestrians and others in the area.

• Pedestrian Control Plans to protect and direct pedestrians when the work impacts sidewalks, crosswalks and bus stops.

• Health and safety manuals outlining safety policies, plans and procedures, and codes of practice which crews operate under.

• Daily site inspections, for which reports are filled out and recorded by supervisors.

Cross at the designated crosswalk. It can be tempting to cross in the middle of the road, but this can be very dangerous. Instead, cross at a designated crosswalk. Look both ways and be aware of your surroundings.

Obey the posted speed limit in construction zones. Active construction zones often have reduced speed limits for good reason. To protect construction workers and pedestrians, it’s crucial for drivers to slow down and follow the posted speed limit, and pay close attention to construction signs and road markings.
