What is High School Cheerleading?

● Cheerleading is an athletic activity that requires skill, technique, hard work, dedication, trust and a positive attitude.

● Cheerleading is very physical whether conditioning, tumbling, cheering, or stunting is taking place.

● As with all high school athletic activities, there is a risk of injury. It is for this reason we make safety a top priority in all aspects of cheerleading.

Academics

● Cheerleading is a huge time commitment. ○ Practices, games, events from the end of May- the middle of March

● Minimum requirement: 2.5 GPA at all times (Cumulative and Current) ● Time management--manage your personal study calendar● Build your study/homework time into our Cheer calendar. There’s often

dead time at away games or before home games.● The most successful cheerleaders are PROACTIVE cheerleaders.

○ If there is a conflict in scheduling, you need to make everyone involved is made aware immediately. Your coaches want to make sure you are able to be successful in everything you want to do, but it is your responsibility to hold yourself accountable for all commitments and work out conflicts ahead of time.

○ All varsity cheerleaders will be asked to fill out the activities/ athletic conflict form this year.

If cheerleaders do not have a GPA of 2.5 by Monday, April 16th, they will be notified (again) and will not be eligible to tryout for the 2018-2019 school year.

● The merit/demerit point system is in place for reward and disciplinary purposes.

● This system provides cheerleaders a guideline as to our expectations of them.

● Merits and demerits are given at the discretion of the coaches.● Please review the guidelines in the handout provided (tryout

packet- cheer constitution).● It is the responsibility of the cheerleader to maintain a running

record of demerits and merits given.

Merits and Demerits

Demerits are reset AFTER summer season (on the day of the Jamboree). Demerits do NOT reset between fall and winter seasons. Merits never reset, and can accumulate from summer-winter to offset any demerits.

Demerit Table

● Special Olympics● Helping with Jr. Tigers/ Tiny Tiger Events● Being the mascot as needed● Making banners● NHS Trick or Treat night● Rolling out mats before an all squad practice● Helping set up Big/Little Field Day● Helping another squad with cheers/chants

Other opportunities may arise throughout the season. Merits happen organically and are not fabricated as “get out of jail free” cards.

● Attendance is required for all at clinics (April 24, 25) and at tryouts (April 27th).

● Tumbling evaluations: April 25th during clinic. ● Optional: Open Gym, April 26th.● Tryouts: Open mat warm-up is at 4:45. Stunting beings at 5:30.● Evaluations:

○ All participants will be evaluated throughout the clinic/tryout session on attitude and appearance.

○ Each participant who makes a squad will be held during the season to what they do at tryouts (technique, skill level, tumbling etc.).

○ Evaluations will be based on what is done at tryouts, not what has been done in the past or what the participant will be able to do in the future.

● Results will be posted in the morning on 4/28 at OHSTigers.com

● Attire- (no jewelry at any time during any cheer event)○ Clinics: Comfortable, modest clothing

appropriate for cheer movement○ Tryouts

■ White traditional t-shirt No logos, no writing, (sports bra should be unseen), black shorts, cheer shoes or tennis shoes

■ High ponytail (cheer hair!); bows are acceptable, but not required

TRYOUTS! (continued)

Cheerleaders can wear any cheer bow they would like at tryouts. Cheerleaders typically coordinate bows with their tryout partner, but do not have to. Hair should be pulled back from their face during tryouts. Cheerleaders can braid their hair and have it go into a ponytail, or they can pull back their bangs into a poof for cheer hair. There is no required attire for tryout clinics. Cheerleaders should wear athletic clothing. Strappy athletic tanks are not appropriate because flyers arms can get stuck in the straps and create an unsafe stunting situation.

Page 10: Cheerleading - Amazon S3€¦ · Minimum requirement: 2.5 GPA at all times (Cumulative and Current) Time management--manage your personal study calendar Build your study/homework

● Do not stunt during tryouts (for safety reasons)● Can elect to try out for JV and/or freshman teams● Freshman team will NOT attend UCA camp over the summer (saving

$375) and therefore will purchase a reduced amount of cheer gear

TEAM SIZES Varsity will be capped at 20 members this year

○ Highly suggest current cheerleaders select JV/Varsity on tryout packet● JV will be cut between the biggest break in score● Freshman team will have a no cut policy

Grow the numbers at the lower levels → improve the program all around

Self-advocacy is taught at the high school level● If a cheerleader has a concern, the concern needs to brought to the coach first, either

on her own or with a friend.● If your cheerleader brings you a concern regarding cheer, ask if he or she has spoken

with the coach before getting involved.● If there is still unrest about how the coach has handled a concern with your daughter,

talk to your cheerleader’s coach before approaching the building or district administrators.

When contacting a coach, please only contact your level coach. Financial questions can go to Coach Bruning- other than that- questions go to your level coach.

Communication Expectations

The Booster group helps our squads in several ways:● Summer Forced Fun Days (Pool Party, Scavenger Hunt)● Camp snacks (donations) (Tiny Tigers and Jr. Tigers)● Homecoming- truck, trailer, house (Varsity, JV/Freshman)● Homecoming dinner (fall)● Senior football game dinners (Varsity only)● Senior Night (Varsity only)● Fundraiser Organizer ● Banquet (Slideshow, scrapbook, event liaison)

This year- I will be adding “Forced Fun” suggestions to the calendar. They are not mandatory events, but if a cheerleader is available, please attend and hang out with your friends! This is the MOST common complaint on the end of year surveys- not enough team bonding- FUN activities outside of practice and games.

Cardinals Tickets● All cheerleaders will be expected to sell 8 tickets for the program.

Cheerleaders have the opportunity to purchase the tickets, or sell them. Tickets are $25.00 a piece, and yield a $10 profit for the program each.

● If cheerleaders sell MORE than 8 tickets, the proceeds of their profit will go towards their cheer gear bill.

TJs Pizza FundraiserCheerleaders who would like to sell TJs pizza to help pay for their cheer gear can pick up an order form at fittings. Fundraiser order forms are due 6/15/18 so we can apply the profit to your cheer gear expenses.
