Sunflowers

Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890)

Auvers-sur-Oise, July 1890Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Vincent van Gogh Foundation)

This was one of his favorite subjects.Large flowering branches against a blue sky, in this case that of the almond tree, which Vincent chose as a symbol for young life because it is one of the earliest flowering trees

With a series of decorative still lives of sunflowers, Vincent wanted to impress his beloved friend and impressionist painter Paul Gauguin. The Sunflowers are among the most famous paintings by Vincent van Gogh.

In the last weeks of his life, Vincent van Gogh made a number of impressive paintings of the cornfields around Auvers. In these landscapes he tried to express “sadness, extreme loneliness”.However, the overwhelming emotions that Vincent van Gogh experienced in nature were also positive.
